Holy shit.    How the fuck?

They've been doing a bunch of renovation recently, seems like it could be related to that.

Still, whether it was an accident or intentional, this is absolutely devastating to see. :fbm

I hate social media in general.

In the past few weeks:

- Sekiro needs an easy mode, THIS IS TOO HARD THINK OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES SAME WITH BABA IS YOU
- IT’S a crime how people are treating joe biden like this!!!
- GAME OF THRONES NEEDS PEOPLE OF COLOR YES I KNOW IT’S THE FINAL SEASON, NO I DO NOT CARE THAT THE SETTING IS MOSTLY IN WESTEROS cue four to five articles bombarding my fucking Facebook from uppity black sjws who think everything should be about black people
- then we get yesterday: IM SPECIAL AND AM HAPPY THAT AN 800 year old PIECE OF HUMAN ACHIEVEMENT iS bURning To The GroUnd
- cue memes

I miss when I could just watch shit on the news or read about it in a newspaper and make up my own mind rather than constantly be bombarded with dog shit.

Time for an internet break.

Welcome to the modern world: where everyone gets a laugh as the world burns

Thank fuck it’s baseball season. Yesterday mlb honored Jackie Robinson. Finally something comforting.

Agreed, Cindi.

I'm not religious in the slightest, not from Paris (and cares for it very little), yet seeing a centuries-old amazing piece of history and architecture from the motherland get ravaged by flames in a few hours is quite disconcerting.

So the whole "look at me I'm an edgy 14yo kickstarting the meme-machine within minutes for internet brownie points" makes me eyes roll really, really hard.

there is already 300 million+ being pledged by billionaires to rebuild this. it will be around for generations to come. im not immune to sorrow for the destruction of symbols, but this by all accounts is just a sad, expensive mistake. i did feel pretty gutted every time i read about some irreplaceable ancient site in the middle east destroyed out of pure malice over the past 5 years though.

Rebuilding it isn't the same. Not that it hadn't been added to/renovated/rebuilt over centuries anyway.

You can't just...rebuild something from the 1100s and act like it's the same thing, ya know?

I mean renovation is basically the same, we often approach those things (or works of art like paintings) as if their state were definitely settled once and for all at inception but there's a lot of upkeep and maintenance going into those things including substituting older worn out elements for newer materials. The Reims cathedral is gorgeous in its current state and it sustained heavier damage in WW1 than Notre Dame. Some of the iconic parts were only added recently. The stone structure survived though I guess they would need to survey if it suffered from the heat. Most of the art pieces were evacuated and no major casualty to people was sustained.

I'm sure things were lost but it's part and parcel of human life. Ultimately this will be salvaged, unlike some of the archeological sites that were destroyed in Syria not that long ago.

Don't worry guys, Fox News is on the case:

Quote
GLENN BECK (HOST): If this was arson, this is going to be bad. If this was arson of any foreign -- kind of -- any foreign entity, any -- anybody with a grudge, I think if -- if, and this is a huge if -- it might have just been started by a cigarette. We don't know. But if this was started by Islamists, I don't think you'll find out about it, because I think it would set the entire country on fire.

...

This is their World Trade Center moment, and if this was done by terrorists, I think that they will keep it quiet, because -- I just don't think Macron and France wants that internal fight.

Quote
MARK STEYN: Christendom is in retreat in Europe, and in France particularly - France has actually quite an aggressive belief in secularism and according to some polls, the French are even by the standards of the modern Western world among the most Godless people in that sense. Three years ago, in that terrible summer that began with the Nice truck killings, when it seemed as if the entire French state was unraveling, I went to Rouen cathedral for the funeral of Hamel, the French priest who had his throat cut at mass. And I went to the basilica of Saint-Denis, which is in the north of Paris where the French kings are buried.

And basically is a Christian museum in the heart of what is now a Muslim suburb in effect. There is no sense of Christianity outside of the walls of that cathedral. And it was after that that I went to then Notre Dame because you do have the sense that a living, breathing faith is just becoming actually a museum. An art gallery. A storage facility. And the French who were on the streets in tears this evening, on the streets of Paris - I don't think they're mourning just history or architecture or art or culture. They are mourning something else. But what that something else post-Christian France can't quite identify it. That's really the conundrum. When Monsieur Macron says we're going to rebuild it - rebuild it for what? When people talk about oh the heart of France has died - what is in the soul of France? What is this? Is it just the building or something more?

There's already 600m euros of donations promised by billionaires and major groups. The biggest oak trader in France will help in nature but says there might not be enough stock as of now.

And to comment on something upthread, French Civil Security commented that air drops (from copters) would have been dangerous because the weight of water can be a strain on structures. I'm not sure there were any nearby anyway (certainly not planes).

The air photos were impressive but really it's the wood roof that burned in a spectacular fashion.

I mean sure, it will likely be "as good as new" in the end, superficially speaking.

Still, it went through centuries pretty much unscathed, including two word wars that saw the complete destruction of entire towns. The worst damage it ever suffered was during the Revolution, and that was mostly pillaging and status being defaced (or I should say, beheaded) as they mistook them for depicting kings, lolz. It never really saw any major changes or refurbishing either.

So it's pretty sad that the worst to ever happen to it was an unfortunate accident - while it was being renovated, no less.

More than I thought possible survived.

https://i.imgur.com/fhQYRY3.gifv

It helped a lot that the interior is very open [with very, very high ceilings] and the walls are mostly stone. Kept the bulk of the fire up high away from ground-level objects that would have been completely destroyed in a conventional building.

Edit: Looks like there were also stone domes underneath the wooden roof [some seem to have collapsed, but others did not]:

So the French companies like Total Oil, Louis Vuitton, Kering (owner of Gucci, Balenciaga, YSL) etc. donated like $700M towards the renovation. Fine, good. But what the hell - is it really that expensive to restore one cathedral? Almost 1 Billion dollars? I thought $100M would be enough.

Someone on ERA mentioned that the partial restoration of a NY cathedral cost 175m$, IIRC. I wouldn't presume to know but yeah it's probably in the range of a large modern building project.

I liked the novelty at first because I enjoy the cute images. I don’t know what to say. I haven’t liked one of them recently! I got the receipts! It’s neat how they make something at first but then it just takes over and you see more about the hentai chick than the actual black hole finding itself. Memes get so overdone, so fast now. It used to be, they’d be kind of isolated to certain websites but now it feels like they’re everywhere pretty quickly.

The routine renovation/maintenance going on before the fire cost something like $50 million, so I'd imagine that completely rebuilding the roof and spire would cost significantly more. And it's certainly possible that the amount that's already been pledged is more than the project will end up costing once it's all said and done.

Ubisoft is giving AC Unity PC away for free on their website.

Also the total sum of the restoration has to take into account the cleaning of artifacts and paintings and such and of course French workers going on strike for half the construction time.
