My friend in the military said the military has issued a warning against seeing the movie opening weekend.

He said the warning specifically mentioned incels.

Why would incels shoot up an incel movie, though? Doesn't make any dang sense. I'd be more afraid of going to see, like, Captain Marvel or something instead.

That's a bit of a stretch. Nobody was pulling a "why is Joker white ugh" card out.
I don't think it's a stretch.

A few years ago this movie would have simply come out and done it's thing. Maybe some incel group would have attempted to co-op the movie after the fact, but they would have been scoffed at. Their would be talk about how some of the elements are problematic, but that would simply be one of the discussions about the movie after movie had already been absorbed by the culture. The movie would be allowed to breathe.

Now though, everyone has to find something problematic even before whatever the thing is out. Yeah sure we're going through some difficult times currently. but the reason this movie is a target is in part because it's lead is "white enough" for the general population to think that. So because of that it gets taged as already maybe having problematic elements before it can even do anything and from there its a race for the tiwtter woke to pat themselves on the back as sesensing that a movie may have some elements that could be twisted by shitty idealoges. And from there it spins out of control.

I doubt the real thought process behind the movie was "make an incel movie" or make " a white male shunned movie". It was probably just make a movie about the joker who is normally a white male and most of his themes when exploring his background deal with someone who is shunned by society. So while those themes do inherently have incel appeal, I doubt the movie makers were ever trying to make a movie for them. Sure its a movie made by white dudes and it probably has some bias. So what? Does it's themes have some issues in 2019? Sure, but if anything your normal American culture would have simply seen this movie as "hey it's about the Joker and I hear it probably takes from that The Killing Joke thing I heard about". Most of the people would'nt have read much more then that. Some internet nerds would maybe take it a little too serious, but hey they also did The Matrix and that hasn't changed the legacy of that movie. These nerds would probably miss the angle of the movie that the Joker is bad and thus made fun of like any idiot who probably thinks Thanos had it right.

But instead the woke media had to get ahead of the curve and make you know "hey this movie has some themes that are bad and you need to agree with it". Which is so funny, because thats what incels want. They want you to be against them, they want you judge them and confirm thier shitty worldview. The alt right wants the media to be against them. They want to say "well gee why can't a movie about a shunned white guy exist no problem" "If the movie was about a minority there would be no problem". These people already have a complex about being prejudiced against. The controversy about this movie probably only fueled that and most of it was based on opinions that had already made up thier mind before seeing the movie. Opinions that decided the movie had this problematic theme before even judging the whole picture.

Seeing this tonight. Do you think it's the kind of film that it's better to watch alone or with a crowd? I've avoided spoilers except for watching the very first trailer, so I don't know what kind of film it's supposed to be

Great movie. Very well made and a killer soundtrack. Easily the best DC movie since The Dark Knight.
I like how the trailers didn't give away everything this time around. But I'm not sure if this will be as compelling watching it for a second or third time.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
One of the things I liked is that Thomas Wayne was not this saint as he was in the other movie. Here we see a calculating politician trying to fix things. Not some holy deity.
The character arc of the movie is really well done as you see Arthur's world crumbling around him both in the real world as well as in his head.

Robert de Niro makes a pretty good talk show host.

Final note. The idea that this movie would incite violence is nonsense. The movie does more to question violence and social unrest instead of glorifying it.

I think it was almost a given that the whole incel label would only apply in the comically stretched definition where it encompass any instance of frustration, rejection, unhealthiness, awkwardness or just dry spell at forming a relationship.

Not quite. I think the best analogy is still Falling Down but the main character starts at an even ridiculously lower point. It's more deranged, and the center of the desperation is on mental illness and poverty. Like Falling Down there is an implicit justification for all the violence but the way it plays out is quite different. And a movement of course forms behind the Joker as he becomes more and more unhinged.

I can see it, but by definition any film that espouses the viewpoint of its protagonist is going to be "toxic" in that way. The feeling gets heightened when dealing with Scarface, D-Fens guy or Joker. I would say most films should be apprehended as unreliable narrations, really. That's not to diminish the discussion to be had about the abyss gazing back and all that or the quality of the filmmaking. Not all directors are talented enough to walk that line of ambiguity (Z.Snyder for instance).

A bunch of the negative Joker reviews are so laughably transparent in their political bent.

Quote
"But the crucial parody, the crucial mockery, the work of which “Joker” comes off as a callously commercial imitation, is “Black Panther”—a comic-book-based movie that infuses its framework with rigorously conceived and boldly assertive political visions to go with its elaborate world-building."
- The New Yorker

The guardian review mentions incels and Jordan Peterson and Ben Shapiro, the alt-right and other shit.

The new york times whines
Quote
"...from Phillips himself, who has been sounding off about the “far left” and “woke culture” and other threats to the ability of a murderous clown to make money unmolested."

Scared to say it was bad, upset this is happening in CURRENT YEAR.

"There’s an inherent worry saying Joker is a bad movie, particularly with the knowledge that female writers have been threatened for stating just such an opinion. But it’s telling a telling statement, both from the angle of women being terrorized to readers being so riled up over a review that they would go to such lengths. Maybe that’s what happens when a movie so unabashedly strives to give justification to the Clown Prince of Evil’s actions as Todd Phillips’ Joker does."

And yes, there is good reason to worry that this film will appeal to incels. The character of Sophie Dumond (Zazie Beetz) exists for no other purpose than to be a supposed love interest who is stalked, obsessed over, has her apartment broken into, and is eventually reduced to a plot gimmick. She is, in other words, an object in Fleck's world rather than a three-dimensional character, with her main function that of reinforcing Fleck's sense of failure and justify his resentments against the world. This is perhaps an intentional parallel to Cybill Shepherd's Betsy from "Taxi Driver," but we actually saw Robert De Niro's Travis Bickle interact with her in meaningful ways and learned about her as a person. While Sophie isn't vilified, the simplistic and objectifying nature of her story arc is problematic, and meshes uneasily with a movie that is aimed at the violently embittered.

I watched the movie and all the alt-right themes that they are desperate to write about are actually not in there.

In fact if you want to make an analogy the movie has more strong left wing messaging. Such as the decline of the welfare state and social programs.

Why the fuck this even needs to be a political issue?  Feels like reverse Ghostbusters 2016 as how dumb all this.

It's only going to get worse. At least we'll all be dead from climate change in a few years.  :doge

You woke guys are just proving Todd Phillips right, you know? Hell, you are even proving that a lot of film critics are shit.

I seriously doubt this is a masterpiece, but come the fuck off with the BS of “is going to get people killed”.

These dumb motherfuckers acting like some weird woke puritans are far more likely to inspire violence than a movie.

What’s more likely to be signal boosted to all corners where someone mentally unwell may latch on: a movie about a Batman villain releasing with the conversation centering around the performances and themes of mental health, social isolation, and violence?  Or a bunch of faux-woke twits co-opting that conversation to yell about on social media outlets and opinion pieces on how “MOVIE=INCELS=VIOLENT SHOOTINGS” and “WE SURE HOPE INCELS DON’T KILL PEOPLE SEEING THIS MOVIE,  DON’T SAY WE DIDN’T WARN YOU <smug smile>”

I mean, I know the woke-mob has developed a real taste for violence after Etika and Alec Holowka, but I don’t think that makes it right to continue egging things on.
