Still have yet to see conclusion of Joker.

Watched the film tonight.
I am not a comic book movie guy, in fact I think every single one I have watched so far was incredibly dumb on some level. I really liked it as a character study of a broken man and Phoenix‘s performance was fantastic. Not many actors can pull off being in a movie that has basically a cast of three characters. What I didn’t like however, was the movie slipping into absurdist territory near the end. Phoenix‘s great performance almost makes you forget though that the plot is paper thin and incredibly contrived, but I guess that comes with the genre of comic book movies.

I did like by the end you started thinking what was actually real and that things were just open-ended enough to foster thought/debate

Joker is the best comic movie since The Dark Knight.

If DC were smart they'd apply an auteristic vision to their entire film universe in the tradition of TDK and Joker as a counter to the utter drek that is the Marvel universe. But they won't because they're morons. This doesn't mean make Supes super serious btw. Just relatsble and understandable in an All Star Superman way.

e: the strong reading is that joker’s been fudging/omitting information, if not just completely making shit up. Some people like that because they like a joker who’s this manipulative and because it salvages the mystique around the character. Its also completely compatible that the details of the ‘origin story’ are bunk, but that they genuinely illustrate the themes that you mention above.
