In between the lines a Dutch report said that if schools would be closed, they would be closed until the summer holidays (which would be June/July).
Next week will see production halted of everything but the most essential things like food, power, medicine and such.

I don't think people quite understand what it means when (air) travel is suspended globally and everyone is locked in their homes.
Existing work can be finished from home sure, but how to get new clients and jobs and who would risk investing 'anything' or signing any contracts?
There's also the health issues. From the minor ones (not being able to see a dentist when a tooth breaks) to the big ones (no ICU for a heart attack) or no immediate mental care for those in need.
Expect a rise in suicides from already depressed people locked up in their homes for weeks as well as a rise in deaths from this virus.

With the way this has been going I fully expect we've all been told to remain indoors with a curfew imposed next weekend across Europe and the United States.
Countries in Europe such as Germany and the Netherlands have also recalled all their troops from overseas operations and positions.

The only thing that could work at this point is a universal basic income of sorts.
The interests rates are 0 and most economies run on credit so no one really has any savings beyond a month or so and that includes businesses.
So unless businesses don't have to pay their employees wages or taxes during the lock down a lot are going under.

I was thinking actually... If the true figure of people infected with the coronavirus is almost certainly considerably higher than the reported figure, then perhaps the mortality rate is also off and is actually considerably lower than reported. My reasoning behind this is, it seems to me that the reported deaths would be much more accurate than reported cases. Mainly because you would imagine that anyone severely ill would be tested and/or a cause of death would be ascertained.

Hence why the Diamond Princess represents an excellent source of study.
A ship packed with people, average age ~70, turned into a virus city and loads of people tested and monitored.

Yeah, but if the average age is 70 it wouldn't be an accurate reflection of the population. It would give some idea how the elderly fare though.

Worked over the weekend (four hours each day)- they were concerned that the increase in people working remotely meant more help was needed.  It was pretty much dead, lol.  So dead today that after going two hours without having done anything, my boss told me I could sign off for the day if I wanted...but I ended up staying on because two more hours of overtime pay for doing very little was pretty awesome.

Now they're sending emails out encouraging people in our main office to work remotely and thinking again that it's going to be a panic.  Was told we're all going to have to work an hour later than usual and to let them know if we can work more past that.  I need some fuckin' rest here.

So the bars around me are posting on their twitter/emails that "we understand the situation is fluid....but we need the money so we're gonna stay open until police come and shut us down. We'll be careful about Covid19"

Get the feeling there's gonna be a lot of places doing that. Will be interesting to see if they actually go around shutting places down.

ICU units coordinator (sorry quick translation):
"Between a 3rd and a 4th of people that goes to the hospital [for Covid] has to go into ICU, even the young do".
"This is a sanitary catastrophy, a contagion that resembles the Spanish Flu"
"Mortality not being high isn't true, lethality is low (individual probability of dying if infected, around 3%); But the infected could be 35% of Italians, let's round to a 3rd, 20 millions Italians, if the 3% of 20 millions dies, you do the math, it's 600.000 dead... that's the dead from WWI"
 :corona_mj

Then the reanimation nurse (5:11), getting angry with the people around the country/planet not taking this seriously, as he has to see people die and intubate them when their lungs fail, kind of got to me.  :-\

I'm starting to get nervous, lads.  :doge

The math on mortality i still find dubious, because Chinese numbers on age groups are pretty clearly no evenly spread across age, but still, it's obvious that saniraty systems getting cripples is pretty devastating on multiple levels.

So this is how prohibition really started?

Someone earlier said they were shocked we could do something about the homelessness issue here in California. We could only really do something about it with the emergency declaration and the funds being freed up, otherwise it would just be blocked in bureaucratic bullshit and never get done.

I'd been to the market a few days ago and saw the toilet paper apocalypse with empty shelves for cleaning supplies and some fresh meat/produce, but all the frozen food and the rest of the stuff was there.

I just got back from Trader Joe's thinking I'd pick up some extra frozen meals to have around in case I need them and the entire store was empty like it'd been looted in a post-apocalyptic movie. The frozen aisles didn't have a single frozen item left. Even the shittiest tasting frozen food was all sold out. Was nuts.

If people start freaking out and panic hoarding food like cleaning supplies at the markets, we could very well be in a situation where there is no food at all to buy or eat anywhere.
Aka they better not shut down McDonalds and fast food stuff because it may be a life saver until this clears up. It sounds like in France/Spain even these places are closed? All I'm seeing is Bank, Post Office, Market, Pharmacy allowed open.

This is the only thing I'm legit worried about if they shut down all food places leaving only markets for food.

FWIW the Ralph's up here in Los Angeles are restocking right now, they plan to reopen at 8am. Of course they probably only got normal shipment levels in so I expect them to be low our out of stuff pretty fast. It's going to take awhile before shortages end, especially with people continually panic buying and no real time table for when the social isolation should end (so many 2 week figures being thrown out).

Wonder how long it is before the first Uber Eats/Grubhub driver is reported with Corona and they shut all that down.

Yeah, I'd like to avoid that wait for the market to open with 200 people and rush into a packed store chaos and maybe virus spreading scenario.

Will check the markets a few times a week and see if there's any food left. I've got about 2-4 weeks of food supplies if the shit hits the fan and restaurants/fast food close. Will be eating A LOT of cereal bars and frozen taquitos but will manage. Just hoping in a couple weeks the panic buying will die down since stores will keep restocking plenty and the panic buyers will have bought all their 6 months worth of doomsday bunker shit already.

That's roughly my hope as well. One thing I am trying (and will find out if it works tomorrow) is I signed up for Imperfect Produce to see if that can get me some produce without having to deal with the stores. I'll report back tomorrow.

Also check your Asian/Indian markets. I've heard that they still have dried goods and produce in some cases.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/15/technology/matt-colvin-hand-sanitizer-donation.html

After he could no longer sell them, a price gouger from Tennessee donated 17000 bottles of hand sanitizer.

Quote
Tennessee’s price-gouging law prohibits charging “grossly excessive” prices for a variety of items, including food, gas and medical supplies, after the governor declares a state of emergency. The state can fine people up to $1,000 a violation.

The language of the law could benefit Mr. Colvin. Gov. Bill Lee of Tennessee declared a state of emergency on March 12, activating the price-gouging law. The Colvin brothers bought all of the sanitizer and wipes in question before that date, and Mr. Colvin said he did not sell anything after it.

Quote
The donations capped a tumultuous 24 hours for Mr. Colvin. On Saturday morning, The New York Times published an article about how he and his brother cleaned out stores of sanitizer and wipes in an attempt to profit off the public’s panic over the coronavirus pandemic. Mr. Colvin sold 300 bottles of hand sanitizer at a markup on Amazon before the company removed his listings and warned sellers they would be suspended for price gouging.

As a result, Mr. Colvin was sitting on an enormous cache of sanitizer and wipes while much of the country searched in vain for them.

The article immediately sparked widespread outrage, with thousands of people posting angry comments across the internet about his actions.

I am kind of shocked such a law even exists, because "muh free markets!".

So, what is protecting children?

“No one has a good answer to that question yet,” says Iwasaki. But she and other experts suspect it may be down to the unique way children’s immune systems respond to these viruses.

A common complication of covid-19, SARS and MERS in adults is acute respiratory distress syndrome, where the immune response against the coronavirus becomes overzealous and causes life-threatening damage to the lungs.

The resulting leakage of fluid and immune cells into the lungs causes big problems, says Chris van Tulleken at University College London. Even if those immune responses are trying to help by attacking the virus, they can end up blocking oxygen uptake in the lungs, he says.

Because children’s immune systems are still developing, one suggestion is that they are shielded from this type of dangerous immune response – called a cytokine storm – when they get covid-19 or similar diseases. During the SARS outbreak, two studies found children produced relatively low levels of inflammation-driving cytokines, which may have been what protected their lungs from serious damage.

That doesn’t explain why children’s immune systems react differently to coronaviruses compared with flu. It might be due to differences in the type of cytokine response produced against each virus, says Iwasaki.

Children may also be benefiting from their lack of past exposure to coronaviruses generally. Because they have lived longer, adults are more likely than children to have encountered other coronaviruses in their lives, such as those that cause coughs and cold, and to already have antibodies against these milder viruses.

There is a suggestion that these existing antibodies could actually leave adults worse off, because they aren’t exactly matched to the new coronavirus. “Sometimes unmatched antibodies can be more harmful than good,” says Wendy Barclay at Imperial College London.

Making the rounds on French Internet, an email of an hospital head and medical expert : without a lockdown with half the population confined in the short term, 30 million could get the virus with a peak estimated in 50 days.

Rumors says the army will be deployed, curfew at 6pm, you have to choose a single residence, 45 days.

state here just opened unemployment to restaurant workers, even those still employed but not making enough, and people on two week+ no work due to places closing temporarily. very helpful cause the casinos shut down over the weekend.

also restaurants are being limited to 50% capacity and officials are suggesting people look into takeout instead :lol

I am kind of shocked such a law even exists, because "muh free markets!".

It's a stupid law.

Stores should raise the prices; that would be the appropriate thing for them to do, and it works out better for everyone.

If say, toilet paper... if toilet paper costs what it appropriately should right now given the sudden scarcity, people who need it would have it available to buy in the store at the correct price instead of panicked randos buying it up cheap because the stores can't - by law - make the adjustment they should.  Increasing the price means said randos can't walk away with so much and wouldn't want to in the first place.  This also obviously incentivizes increased production.

Same principle where concerts don't cost what they should and scalpers swoop in and take profits because they get what people are actually willing to pay.

Or... and this is a radical idea, I know... We limit the goddamn items to "per customer." 3-5 Hand Sanitzers being bought by scalpers at stores means a slower collection. Double-so if they keep a record/someone recognizes them.

The issue is these scalpers are able to buy an ENTIRE FUCKING PALLET with no issues. I mean, sure, protect prices and all that: Great. But this wouldn't be an issue in the first place if "scalpers" weren't able to jump on something, completely dominate the supply and had to be limited to 1-2 items.

Norwegian has two ships with passengers that can't find docks

One was denied by Australia, New Zealand, fiji, and American samoa. They're doing to try Hawaii next, which is like another week of sailing

The other ship left Oman, was denied docking in Seychelles and now denied in South Africa. They're out of fresh food and don't know where to go
