If we use official death figures, that's an IFR of 1.1%. If we use the Financial Times' excess deaths figure of 55,000, we get 1.65%.

To get herd immunity in the UK, we need 500-750k deaths.

Looks like the US will be close to 1,500 by the end of the day. I'm not saying there won't be a second wave in the US, but it's more likely we'll just see a never-ending first wave.

Yeah, feels like we're settling in to a period where R0 = ~1, which would be a lot cooler if we'd smashed infections down to a South Korea level.

OTOH deaths are a lagging indicator and cases are slowly going down despite a higher amount of testing so maybe it's looking a bit better than that.

Quote
The coronavirus pandemic continues its deadly march through rural counties and small towns across the country, led by flareups in Southern and Midwestern states that are becoming new epicenters of the outbreak.

Almost 80 percent of Americans now live in counties where the virus is spreading widely, according to an analysis by the Brookings Institution demographer William Frey.

In the last week, 176 counties have started to see substantial spread of the virus. The vast majority of those, 159, are smaller exurban or rural counties. The increased transmission in those areas shows the virus's spread outward from its initial hubs in major cities like New York, Detroit, San Francisco, Seattle and New Orleans and into neighboring regions.

But the virus is also beginning to attack some cities that avoided an initial wave, a troubling reminder that it could still infect millions of Americans who have so far been safe.

Highly populated areas like Tampa and St. Petersburg, Fla., are now reporting dozens of new cases. Collin County, Texas, in the Dallas metroplex, and Wake County, N.C., are also showing signs of broader spread.

So are smaller, more rural communities like Yell County, Ark., and exurban areas outside of major cities like Minneapolis, Milwaukee and Columbus, Ohio.

"The U.S. is very large and diverse in terms of population density and movement. This is partially why we are seeing different experiences across the country," said Amira Roess, an epidemiologist at George Mason University's College of Health and Human Services. "In general, we are continuing to see outbreaks in less urban areas in the U.S."

It just occurred to me, if the cabronavirus had hit in 2016, there would have been no Brexit and no President Tmurp.
Not true, big part of their victories involved the death cult of ISIS running amok and economic difficulties.
Plus it is unlikely that Obama would've closed the borders first like Trump did.
It would've probably meant a bigger role for Bannon in the White House and an aggressive China policy and sealing borders completely from the start.

COVID-19 in the middle of the ISIS conquest and refugee crisis?  :whew

COVID-19 in 2015 would've made had a different outcome for the US. Trump would've been focused on keeping his hotel business alive and wouldn't have announced, by 2016 he was already on the path of no return.
Without Trump in the race it would've likely been President Jeb! or Cruz. Hillary would've had pneumonia and COVID-19 on 9/11 and probably wouldn't have made it.  :doge

Republicans tried to use Ebola back in 2014/2015 as an attack on Obama despite only a few cases and no community spread.

If anything, if this novel coronavirus got hit in 2016, half the state would have tried to burn off the other half. And we would have gotten vice president Rand Paul because he's a fake doctor.  :yuck

It would have gotten messy.

Remember how the governor of Texas acted like Jade Helm was a real thing? How Rubio was running as a mainstream Republican by saying Obama was knowingly and deliberately trying to sabotage the country?

Then Obama says* we're shutting down all the businesses, telling cops to arrest small business owners for giving people haircuts, and we're going to explode the deficit so I can give money to people who aren't working. More money than they'd make if they were working, even.

Those nutjob protests get a lot bigger, lemme tell ya.

The media would've kept their 'it's just the flu' spiel up longer as they wouldn't necessarily have wanted to fight the White House (except for maybe the Fox News a few other outlets), which would've made a reverse in course harder.
The Obama White House was ill prepared for something like this in 2016 when all eyes were on the Middle East and the transition to a new administration.

It would've hit China and probably the war zones in Syria/Iraq first through Russia.
Air traffic between the US/EU/China would've not been halted as quickly, allowing it to spread further much faster including to the millions of refugees stuck in camps or migration centers.
The only way this has a better outcome is if China had decided to come clean and warned everybody, which wouldn't have happened.

Instead Wolf Blitzer would've been interviewing 'renowned businessman' Donald Trump about the need for a bailout for hotels and airlines because people are afraid to travel plus what a mess it was in New York.

Other countries would've been in a worse position too, Greece dealing with the refugee crisis, France with President Hollande and the Tories caught completely off guard in the middle of their leadership contest.
Most nations would've been paralyzed and few leaders would have had the political capital to do a lockdown.

The R0 is ~1 (0.99 from 0.91 a couple of weeks ago) according to https://covid19-projections.com, which is run by Youyang Gu. Apparently over the last month, he's had the most accurate projections.

OTOH deaths are a lagging indicator and cases are slowly going down despite a higher amount of testing so maybe it's looking a bit better than that.
We're at 25,964 new cases today at worldometers.info, which I think is the most in about a week. Youyang Gu says that the 7-day avg of new confirmed cases has been ticking up in the past few days, after consistently falling for a straight month.

The more expansive testing is the less likely the additional tests will yield positives.

The Obama White House LITERALLY HAD A PANDEMIC PLAYBOOK to handle exactly this situation in 2016 you nard
They would've had the same setbacks of China not telling everyone there was a deadly virus in the first place or lying about how human to human transmission wasn't possible.
There would've also been the same worldwide shortages of PPE's and other materials needed to handle such an outbreak.

Many countries that had a playbook for events like this like the UK and The Netherlands completely botched their response anyway.
While countries with little to no resources to handle this situation like Taiwan did a fantastic job (mostly because they didn't trust China).
A playbook wouldn't have guaranteed a different outcome. Fauci is pretty much the most renowned expert in this field of viral outbreaks and pretty much all his recommendations have been followed.
We're seeing the same type of response on a global level just different levels of 'lockdown' depending on specific conditions in the country.

How would the Obama administration for example have been more effective in containing the outbreak in New York? What could they have done differently?
Do you think Obama would've banned all travel from and to China when the virus started in Wuhan? Doing the opposite of the other G7 members?

The Obama White House would've been completely overwhelmed by this, just like the world is now. Perhaps even more so considering the fact that many other events were happening at the same time.

The Trump administration had nothing to do with containing the outbreak in NY or any other state/city as that's all been handled locally. The travel ban from China didn't matter because 1. Nearly half a million people came in from China after the ban and the virus came to the west coast that way anyway and 2. No one gave a fuck about European travel and what hit New York and the rest of the east coast came from Italy, not China.
Exactly, so you would've more or less had the same outcome playbook or not until now at least.

What happens next is where things get more dicey. Opening up too early could have big consequences but restrictions being lifted is also currently a worldwide trend.

You're arguing the Obama administration would have done worse than the Trump administration by using both Trump administration failures and also successes they had nothing to do with as examples why Trump is doing a better job than Obama would have. You stupid fuck.
Not really, I'm saying they both failed but Obama would've been in a worse position given the fact that the world in its entirety was in a bad place in 2016, hence the reason why Trumpo got elected in the first place
I don't see anything that Obama or anyone but the Chinese government could've done that would've made the start of the outbreak any different.

So I'm asking you specifically, what you think Obama could've done or would've done that would've changed the outcome of the outbreak.

Quote from: TFA
I heard the front door open. The kids ran out. I hoped they’d do what I told them: “Do not let anyone in the house, not even a cop. Do not tell them I’m here. Just say hi to Mami Vicky.”

I heard voices. I heard footsteps. Minutes later, Vicky and the kids came upstairs. The cop was gone. The coast was clear.

It took Vicky hours to relax. She told me the story. She told my mom, her brother, her sister. She had her story down.

She said, “They held me for an hour. It was police brutality. The cop at the checkpoint looked at my paperwork and told me to make a U-turn. I said I came through four days ago with my kids. He said, ‘You should not have been let through; turn around.’ I pulled over. I wasn’t going to leave. I said I needed to speak to a deputy. I said I left my kids alone. The deputy told me to shut up. That’s when I started crying. I said I went out to run errands. I tried to show him the plastic drawers I just bought at Walmart. But he was not interested in evidence. He said, ‘Listen, lady, I’ve been here 13 hours listening to bulls**t stories like yours.’

Like, I get wanting to be with your family. But hollllllllllllllllllllllllly shiiiiiiiiiiittttttttt

Judging by the fuckery going on with unlimited exercise and being able to travel 2+ hours to beaches and the bank holiday weekend being this weekend in the U.K. I can see there being a large build up of cases over next 14 days from Monday, could even be what starts second peak. Boris has also gone missing he’s not done a briefing in absolutely ages and the limited info we are getting is absolute shit. Meant to have the tracing app by 1st June but that sure as fuck isn’t happening. Apparently the app is shit and barely works lol.

Just 7.3% of Stockholm had Covid-19 antibodies by end of April, study shows

My younger brother in college has apparently had a fever and a cough that's gotten worse over the past week and finally went and got tested today. Haven't seen him since Christmas. Hope he's ok.

Maybe a Playtronix Rare tribute, not vintage Rare

Just 7.3% of Stockholm had Covid-19 antibodies by end of April, study shows

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/21/just-7-per-cent-of-stockholm-had-covid-19-antibodies-by-end-of-april-study-sweden-coronavirus

Meaning all those preventable deaths in Sweden were for nought; no herd immunity in sight.

Lets wait until we have all the facts in 10 years and people will have forgotten about grandpa or mother

In August 2019, my kids and I moved to Madrid. Our plan was to spend a year in Spain; learn Spanish; see the world; learn to live less like spoiled Americans.

The truth is, we were the exact people the cops wanted to keep out. We had been in one of the most infected cities in one of the most infected countries in the world. We rode two airplanes; walked through three airports. Two of us were children, currently considered vectors. But we disregarded the rules because… well, because we wanted to.

My job is still playing it really safe.  They're not going to even start to consider having people go back into the office until mid-September and anyone high-risk or who doesn't want to go because of kids won't have to.

Generations after us will look at old movies and films wondering why only the villains wear protective masks  :doge
