wasn't there a lot of discussion early on about how we had never made a vaccine for this type of virus before and one might never happen?  I thought I heard it described as akin to the mythical "curing the common cold" (which we collectively gave up on and just shrug and treat the symptoms)

If they develop a vaccine in 6 months it will prove the theory that they could have cured the flu and cold but never did because they make more money selling medicine for the symptoms

As I understand it, the vaccines will help stop the worst cases, and minimize deaths. covid aint going away, it's already been shown to mutate .

Our best hope is that with a viable vaccine, it mutates to become another common cold instead of killing hundred of thousands each year.

I don't know that many knowledgeable people said a vaccine was not possible, just that it might not give long-lasting immunity. There was also a concern that SARS-CoV-2 would mutate so rapidly that the vaccine would soon become useless.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't there vaccines for the A/H1N1 strain, which caused the 1918 flu pandemic?

The immune response from a common cold fades fast, such that you can be reinfected soon after. I assume that plus the fact that there are so many causes of the cold make a vaccine impractical.

What if it mutates into something like herpes, where it's inside you, and makes random appearances every so often right before a big important event.

I believe the chicken poxes work like that too. You think youre safe, you get old and BAM youre sick and dying because its back baby

As I think I mentioned before, developing vaccines costs an astronomical amount of money.

No one will invest that for something like the common cold. Similarly, vaccine development for SARS and MERS got shut down pretty quick because those outbreaks ended up being so limited, both geographically and temporally.

So there's your answer as to why there are currently no vaccines for other coronaviruses - it's got nothing to do with whether it's possible or not.

It's not going to "mutate" into something capable of latent infection either anytime soon (or ever). Those that do belong to completely different kinds of virus families, with dedicated mechanisms for this.

NZ had their first reported case(s) today. Auckland went into shutdown mode and people are back to panic buying at the store in response.

It's heart-warming to know that people are all the same, wherever we are.

Yeah, there are plenty of flu vaccines. Sars-CoV-2 is not a flu virus, though. So can't be compared.

Last I checked the common cold doesn't shut down countries for months, nor does it kill hundreds of thousands per season..

The problem with the flu is that there's a fuckton of strains and it's more or less a guessing game and then race as to which one will hit next and needs vaccines produced for.

Influenza is also a lot more unstable than coronaviruses - flu vaccines' efficiencies are trash compared to say, yellow fever.

But keep living in your fantasy conspiracy world I guess.

Sure would love a vaccine real early, not for myself. I'm in contact with some elderly relatives who can't fully quarantine and so need help. I've been borderline isolating for months too.
It'd be nice after months of that to be able to relax to normal safeguard levels without the risk of asymptotic transmission chalking me up a multiple person body count.

Texas:

In the week ending Aug. 8, an average 36,255 coronavirus tests were administered in Texas each day — a drop of about 42% from two weeks earlier, when the average number of daily tests was 62,516.

At the same time, the percentage of tests yielding positive results has climbed, up to 20% on average in the week ending Aug. 8. Two weeks earlier, the average positivity rate was around 14%.

I was wondering why case counts dropped, should've figured it was testing fuckery and not virus receding.

Florida sheriff bans deputies, visitors from wearing masks

On Tuesday, as Florida set a daily record for covid-19 deaths, Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods prohibited his deputies from wearing masks at work. His order, which also applies to visitors to the sheriff’s office, carves out an exception for officers in some locations, including hospitals, and when dealing with people who are high-risk or suspected of having the novel coronavirus.

In an email to the sheriff’s department shared with The Washington Post, Woods disputed the idea that masks are a consensus approach to battling the pandemic.

“We can debate and argue all day of why and why not. The fact is, the amount of professionals that give the reason why we should, I can find the exact same amount of professionals that say why we shouldn’t,” Woods wrote in the email, which was first reported by the Ocala Star-Banner.

Woods, meanwhile, told his deputies on Tuesday to stop wearing masks in most cases. While officers can still mask up in areas including the courthouse and county jail, they must immediately take off the face coverings afterward. Deputies working special events are also forbidden from wearing masks, Woods said.

All visitors to sheriff’s department buildings will be asked to take off their masks in the lobby, Woods said, linking that rule to the ongoing protests against police brutality.

Some defy the rules knowing precisely what the worst-case scenario is. Others deny the threat, foolishly thinking either that COVID-19 is a hoax, or that the virus can’t infect or kill them. We’ve seen plenty of examples of coronavirus deniers experiencing that worst-case scenario. But even so, plenty of people are still willing to ignore safety measures like social distancing and face masks, which can significantly reduce the risk of transmission.

The latest example of how not to approach the pandemic involves a 28-year-old mother who is in store for months grueling of rehab. She spent 69 days in bed after contracting the virus, and now she’ll have to relearn how to walk. She can’t even comb her hair, and her health will take months to improve.

...

After 69 days in the ICU, Martinez was moved to a regular hospital on June 29th, but the story doesn’t end there. “It’s one day after the next after the next,” she told El Pais. “I was irresponsible.”

...

She was asleep for a long time, and the doctors used strong sedation to relax her muscles. She lost muscle mass to the point where she couldn’t even hold up her head or walk. Other organs have also been affected, including her eyes.

“For three months, they’ve been washing me with sponge baths, and until not long ago, I couldn’t even go to the bathroom alone. They have been putting diapers on me… Diapers,” she told the paper.

One of her treating physicians said that the rehabilitation period would easily take eight months, and she may experience health issues even after that.

PAULDING CONTY, Ga. (CBS46) -- North Paulding High School now has at least 35 confirmed COVID-19 cases in students and teachers after kicking off the school year with in-person classes a week ago.

On Monday and Tuesday the school was closed for a deep cleaning after only nine tests were confirmed positive. By Wednesday that number had more than tripled.

As a safety measure, Paulding County School District Superintendent Dr. Brian Otott and Principal Gabe Carmona announced Wednesday that students would adhere to a hybrid learning environment.

A letter sent to parents from both Carmona and Otott read in part:

"Before the school year began, we shared that this would be a school year unlike any other, and that there would be challenges ahead that would require us to adjust, adapt, and be flexible. We knew that would be especially true at NPHS, the largest high school in Paulding County with more than 2,000 students and staff on campus at any given time. We have received results from pending COVID-19 tests, and with new positive results we now have at least 35 confirmed cases in the NPHS community since the first day of

school. Obviously, the rate of COVID-19 spread is a concern that will require us to adapt our plan for in person instruction to protect the health and safety of our students and staff.

The plan we have developed will reduce the number of students on campus by half, will reduce hallway congestion, will improve traffic flow during class tran

One in four young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 say they've considered suicide in the past month because of the pandemic, according to new CDC data that paints a bleak picture of the nation's mental health during the crisis.

The data also flags a surge of anxiety and substance abuse, with more than 40 percent of those surveyed saying they experienced a mental or behavioral health condition connected to the Covid-19 emergency. The CDC study analyzed 5,412 survey respondents between June 24 and 30.

The toll is falling heaviest on young adults, caregivers, essential workers and minorities. While 10.7 percent of respondents overall reported considering suicide in the previous 30 days, 25.5 percent of those between 18 to 24 reported doing so. Almost 31 percent of self-reported unpaid caregivers and 22 percent of essential workers also said they harbored such thoughts. Hispanic and Black respondents similarly were well above the average.

Roughly 30.9 percent of respondents said they had symptoms of anxiety or depression. Roughly 26.3 respondents reported trauma and stress-related disorder because of the pandemic.

Another 13.3 percent of respondents said they have turned to substance use, including alcohol and prescription or illicit drugs, to cope with stress from the pandemic.

The lower the social connectivity, the fewer people you need to have been infected for the R0 to drop below 1

If social connectivity is at a normal level, you need 60% of the population infected for the R0 to drop below 1. If social connectivity is at 50%, you need 25% of the population to be infected for the R0 to drop below 1.
