I'm in the same boat, kinda. I understand there is a breadth of human experience, and I also understand that brain chemistry can make you genuinely invested in some daft shit. However, this contrived pluralgang shit is quite clearly contrived shit. Sometimes you need people to cut through the fog and say 'you're not half cheese sandwich and half celestial dragon headmate, you're traumatised and running away from your problems into a fantasy land that nobody else respects, they're just humouring you'.

Members aren't expected to make public mea culpas whenever they make a mistake, so that cuts both ways. Taking responsibility like Nepenthe did is exactly what she should be doing. Menchi accepted the apology and the thread has moved on.

I think you're misreading that line. Staff are expected to follow the same rules, and when they make mistakes we hope they will own up to them. The guidelines don't promise that they'll be banned for it; the forum software literally does not support that, so that was never the intended meaning.

The key point that's being overlooked here is that members aren't given a chance to explain a mistake. Mods just hand out bans.

The only admin that I've ever seen try to engage a user (and in that case the user stupidly doubled down) was [USER=16]Hecht[/USER].

There is an assumption of good faith when mods and admins make mistakes, while there is an assumption of bad faith when members post content deemed actionable.

This even extends to you [USER=143]B-Dubs[/USER]. If a regular member had made a joke about a revenge porn victim, it would have been a ban, even if mods saw the reports after it was redacted.

It's not fair to say it "cuts both ways" when that isn't the case. For any number of reasons (technical, practical, etc.) mods are not held to the same standards as normal members. Whether or not that is a problem or not is a question for the staff to decide, but there is no question that the standards are different.

Only response so far is someone swooping in to defend the mods because it's only logical to assume anybody you don't already know is evil:
