I don't think there's anything morally inconsistent about acknowledging Chris as a victim of the internet's ability to dehumanize and turn everyone into a circus show while simultaneously acknowledging their heinous acts and need to be isolated from the rest of society.  All shutting down discussion proves is people can't act like adults and understand the grays of an incredibly fucked up situation.

most recently they were making an honest attempt to help him earn some money for a trip to a convention he wanted to go on, and it was all going really well, there was hope that things were starting to work out
