I don't think any of them got that wrong, actually. They just think it's problematic for the monster to look like a black dude....for some reason.

The creatures appearance is explicitly described, frankenstein himself is much less so (its basically "he didnt look like an eskimo")
the 'monster' is routinely described as 'the creature' not 'monster', as in 'thing that was created' rather than as in 'creature feature'.
