So if I got this right, it basically means:

- Apple gets hashes from governments. Apple doesn't know what those hashes are for, because obviously, they don't have access to the pictures.

- Apple looks on all iPhones for files that match those hashes, and if they find them, they will forward this to the government for criminal prosecution.


If this is true, it basically ends privacy. It's a complete surrender to governmental control. The government could give them any hashes, for example one for pictures of police abuse or leaked docs that show war crimes. And Apple would give them back a nice list of all people who have those files. This is fucking insane.

Meanwhile, governments are allowing the catholic church to investigate themselves for child abuse.

Also on the frontpage of the Financial Times now. What a dumb move by Apple. Even if they backpedal now, why should I trust them in the future regarding privacy? When they just introduce such an invasive feature without explaining it, on a whim?

Wow, so they are looking at chat content on a device, circumventing E2E encryption that way, and analyze the messages for offensive content? Even notify others about it? This will surely not be abused by authoritarian governments (for example, the next GOP government)

And saying that on-device CSAM detection is actually a privacy feature seems ridiculous. Also, nothing about how users are protected from governments manipulating the hash database.

Edit: I don't get why they are doing this. They are seriously risking one of their biggest USPs, which is privacy. I think it's very likely that there will be a backlash and now they won't be able to get out of it gracefully.

I always struggle to understand where this "sinophobia" reaction on Reeeeesetera comes from.

Is it because:

Payment providers basically forced them to verify all uploads, studios and models. It was never about a specific type of content.

They ruined the search to a point that you didn't even bother using it anymore and it became impossible to find new Tumblrs.

I’m pretty sure that tumblr used CP as one of the reasons why they killed porn in general (doing the minimum necessary to appease Apple). And the porn hub fiasco started because an article of New York Times (lawsuits aside, the credit card companies used it as a perfect excuse to abandon ship).
