I thought it was decent, the stealth was repetitive but worked well enough. The tools for effective stealth were too limited for it to be great, but it was a 7/10 game for me. :trumps

Also the difficulty on TLOU was stupid by about half way through, you have shit guns, no ammo, take one shotgun blast you're dead. Fun balance when shotgun grunts rush so hard.

Game is supposedly done, maybe they actually let some of the devs take a break.

Wonder if they ever decided to let QA work remotely or if they were still making them come in.

let me slap you in the face with my dick when i tell you i've beat all the mgs games on extreme

tlou's stealth was pure balls. how the fuck do you program it so that enemies change their routes to walk away from you as you creep up on them? that alone makes any stealth run a gigantic pain in the ass. but then you add in other random enemy movements, sections where it isn't clear that you're supposed to fight your way out of, no way to hide again after being seen, and areas where the enemy will spot you no matter what, and you my friend have a game that sucks complete unmitigated ass as a stealth title.

i was stupid enough to try and make my first run on grounded, the bonus difficulty. damn near made it to the end of the section too, but when i realized there were way less checkpoints than in other difficulties i bumped that shit down to regular old hard mode and never looked back. fuck those game mechanics.

I haven‘t touched the game in almost seven years. I don‘t recall having these issues with the stealth gameplay, but maybe wanting to progress the story that I liked well enough even though it was riddled with tropes kinda made me overlook these flaws.

Yeah TLOU stealth is not as good as MGS5. Ok and? It's not trying to be the end all be all stealth game. It's like Uncharted in that they are well rounded "adventure" games with great production values, extreme polish, easy accessibility, and decent story telling. They kind of take concepts form other games and present them good enough and in easier to grasp fancy wrapper.

So TLOU just has a bit more stealth and survival game concepts then an Uncharted ever would.

I thought it was a good game, but like most Naughty Dog games not something I'll replay or value beyond the first enjoyable playthrough.

I wasn't looking forward to this as TLOU felt like it was enough. So beyond amazing production values I wasn't too excited for the story and I'm not in the mood for some of the shallowness of ND games. So I don't care that it got pushed back. I'll play it when it comes out.

Yes but I am speaking with direct knowledge that they originally did not plan on letting any of their QA WFH. That probably did change once the state started shutting things down, but Naughty Dog was definitely trying to avoid it.

Yeah I quit because there was a section where it did seem outright impossible to pass with stealth.

Random cheating AI is not good stealth mechanics.

Also the entire game having your AI companions jumping around everywhere unseen was almost too comical for me to stand lol

I bet you I could load my save and take a screenshot and it’d be the exact same place you quit. Might do that today as I have fuck all else to do lol

QA seems like a real hard thing to do remote, esp when you take into account how annoyingly locked down devkits are. Feasible if they relax requirements on the static IP requirements to make the things work.

I just recently finished my 2nd playthrough of TLOU (the Remastered one this time)... I never knew folks played ND games for the gameplay in this day and age.   :mysterio  Since Uncharted 1, they're nothing but atmosphere and narratives... padded with some floaty gameplay and a shit ton of varied animations.  :doge  As a big MGS fan meself, I thought the stealth worked in TLOU... It's there, but it's nothing to write home about.

The gameplay is serviceable, fluid and fun, i don't see a problem with it, tbh.
People complain about the invisible companions, but they'd bitch even harder if you got a game over because the dumb AI got themselves caught.
And no, having amazing AI isn't really a valid answer, since it's not really a thing in any game.

It's not a super deep stealth game, but it's supposed to keep a brisk pace as you go through the story, not trying to be Chaos Theory where you analyze a guard's route for 10 minutes.

The two main issues I have with the game, are the pacing for the first half (up until you meat the two brothers) is way too dilated and the fact that, for all their wanking about building a nuanced world, every person outside of the protagonists, is a faceless psycho/henchman, so going around bricking people in the face doesn't really feel like the moral dilemma they advertised pre-release.

I think Nintendo was looking at riots and petitions if they delayed it. :lol For real I think the blowback would have been pretty massive. They delayed it last year which sucked, but the bright spot was having a firm release date we knew Nintendo would hit. Delaying it past that would have pissed more people off than any other game getting delayed IMO.

It also helps that March 20, while things were getting pretty bad, still weren't as bad as they've gotten, or will continue to get for the foreseeable future. :-\

Oh yeah it would suck for sure;  it's just super silly feeling in the game.   Basically they decided to make most of the game a series of escort missions for story purposes and just said "fuck it, gameplay wise it doesn't matter they'll just hop around unseen."    Like I get it, it would be worse if the enemies saw them.. but how silly it is calls into question the entire design of the game.

Quote
It's not a super deep stealth game, but it's supposed to keep a brisk pace as you go through the story, not trying to be Chaos Theory where you analyze a guard's route for 10 minutes.

There's nothing deep about the puzzles either;  move ladder.. move ladder.   Which contributes to the snooze-fest that is the early game.  Why even include gameplay mechanics that are so damn half baked?

Like I said I understand people who enjoy shallow story-driven games.. what I don't understand is why this game got so much gameplay praise along with it's story (which I find laughably heavy handed as well.)
I agree about the puzzles, ladders and boxes are absolutely mind numbing in it, it's probably why they made fun of it in Uncharted Lost Legacy; hopefully they learned that lesson in LoU2.

Regarding stealth/combat; a gameplay system has to work well with the game as a whole.
I made this argument for the platforming in Assassin's Creed, but in a game that is using a gameplay system as a secondary feature, you don't want too much depth, as it could end up working against the cohesive whole.
I'm not sure i've ever seen anyone really praise the gameplay as anything more than that (it being very fluid and intuitive, especially for the pace the game is trying to keep, as i mentioned).
If anything, it's usually accompanied by the "movie-game" meme.

And yeah the story is a decent videogame story, it crosses every bridge the genre is usually built upon, every clichè is there, but the bar is very low in the space, so there's that.
The acting kinda saves mediocre material, if i have to be honest.
I would say people are easy on it because it's a videogame, but then people loved that fucking John Krasinski movie, so i think it's the post apocalypse setting, that turns peoples' brains off.

tbh, i consider invisible ellie to be fairly damning of storytelling in gaming in general. The entire game is about Joel's relationship with her, and it's gutted during every interactive sequence, relying entirely on video sequences and dialogue. Naughty Dog designed the game so that the player never has to do anything but focus on murder in one of the greatest acts of condescending game design I have ever seen. I've heard of other places that were able to get them to whitelist people's home IPs and allow for devkits to be taken home. It's not something that would normally be allowed but this isn't a normal situation. You think all those engineers were working without local access to devkits?

On the topic of TLOU, I noped out after I realized how inorganic the level design was. It reminded me of BioShock Infinite where you could tell exactly what kind of gameplay situation you were about to get into based on the layout of the "no enemy" area and what items were found for crafting. While they had this issue to some degree in the Uncharted games, it felt even more pronounced (or I was just burned out on it) in TLOU. It was like they had a template "item area", "combat area", "item area", "puzzle area", "stealth area" and that was it. That and I just don't enjoy stealth.

I remember the DLC doing a better job but it's probably been 5 years since I played it. Having both humans and zombies on the same map made the encounters more interesting and I remember more verticality in the level design.

I never played Uncharted 4 so I'm not sure how things evolved post-Left Behind.

This is a good point, but as i've said, they're not looking to do an experimental game, when doing a massive AAA title made to sell systems.
Imagine the random variety streamer trying to wrestle with that aspect of the game.

Besides, we all hate Ico for that very reason.  ::)

Contrast it with say... Ico, which might be the extreme other end of the scenario.

I know a lot of people shit on it, but FFXV is probably one of the most recent games where I ended up caring about the other characters and feeling like they weren't just a massive burden on me for the entire game.

Ironically, one of the most heartfelt things in that game is when a party member becomes a burden on the player.

On this subject, I'm a fan of clunky game mechanics with purpose, even if that purpose isn't the most realized or fulfilled completely. I'd say Ico accomplishes what it sets out to do with a lot of success.

An example of terrible escorting is in Halo 1 on legendary (Truth and Reconciliation) and the PS2 GTA games. The former has you escorting a paper NPC against brutal and unrelenting AI with a fail state issued when the paper gets fucking shredded instantly. The latter has AI that's oblivious to everything in a open world environment, combined with abysmal pathfinding.

OH!

/v/ rumored plot
Now Deleted Last of Us 2 Plot Leak which read:

- I am the immediate family member of someone working at Naughty Dog The Last of US 2.

- As you know TLoU2 will be Ellie centered obviously. The stories main driving point is the romance that briefly kindled between Dina and Ellie.

- Ellie and Joel are distant because of Joel being controlling stemming from the decision in TLoU but are starting to try and mend their relationship.

- There is a love triangle of sorts, not exactly a triangle as its just two people who love Dina, being Jesse and Ellie.

- Jesse (asian guy from the trailers) and Dina were a couple. Dina is bisexual.

- When Jesse and Dina are on the outs of their relationship Dina starts to make advances on Ellie.

- Due to Dina being the girl every guy wants and having a history dating men (men being a central driving force in this story) Ellie is cautious and is unsure of how serious Dina is.

- However after several flirtatious gestures Ellie begins to question if Dina really does loves Ellie, and Ellie ultimately begins to fall for her.

- Act 1 concludes with Diana and Ellie sharing an important intimate moment solidifying the relationship played through act 1.

- That is until they are interrupted and attacked by a religious sect called the Seraphites (one of 2 groups we encounter, the other being the WLF).

- Jackson is also attacked.

- Dina is killed in this attack.

- The Seraphites believe they are angels cleansing the wasteland. The old "the end of the world is cause of the sinners" trope.

- Anyone that is not a Seraphite is considered a "wolf" or "enemy to the flock (the Seraphites)". They also refer to themselves as "lambs"

- In the vein of SJW baddies, the Seraphites dont like gays because its a sin.

- This is why all their members are *usually* white males with shaven heads or white women. And the few apostates (traitors) that leave the group tend to be minorities.

- Ellie vows to get revenge on the group.

Jesse joins her (That is Jesse in the trailer grabbing Ellies mouth, not Joel) as he also loved Dina. He is later killed as Ellie watches.

- Ellie goes to her old house.

- Then Joel joins her. Until he dies too.

- In the trailer you can see the Seraphites hanging people. This is because they use the old medieval method called "hanging and quartering"

- They only hang and disembowel former Seraphites. The disembowelment is for traitors or "Apostates".

- On the way to avenge Dina they have to cross through WLF territory.

- The leader of the WLF is Marlenes brother.

- Joel Dies and Ellie questions if her quest for revenge was worth losing Joel who she only recently mended her strained relationship with.

- The Seraphites are all immune

- The cut on the cheek is a test for immunity. An infected knife.

- Flashback happens

- The Mystery woman in the trailer is Ellies mom.

- Ellies mom was looking for a cure

- She has a baby with a man that is immune

- the man is killed for sleeping with a "wolf" or outsider

- Marlene and Anna (Mystery Woman) were friends.

- Anna gives birth to Ellie then had Ellie taken away after being born to get her away from Marlene and the Seraphites.

- Marlene (who is WLF) is then sent to retrieve
Ellie and eventually finds her, using her friendship with Anna to win Ellies trust

- Ellie ends up with Seraphite girlfriend who wont turn when they exchange fluids
[close]

Fridging women. Nice.

TL;DR: Ellie's love interest dies (of course, everyone knows this). Apparently is bisexual, had her former lover killed in the process. Joel dies in this game.

Basically killing a lesbian (fridging women) love interest for a revenge plot.

The plot sounds exactly what you might expect from a 'deep' Sony walking simulator game in the year of our lord 2020.

I know what "fridging" means, but i think it's a stupid way to judge storytelling.
Every "trope" is stupid in a vacuum.
Not that LoU is above cheap drama, see the intro of the first one.  :lol

I mean this one seems extra-stupid if this leak is real: Oh they're a bisexual so we're gonna kill her off to give Ellie grief and have her be able to be a playable character for our murder fantasy sim. :doge

Yeah, really. There has to have been a better way to have Ellie go on her murder spree than "oh she finds another girlfriend. WHOOPS, KILLED BY A CULT!"

I mean they already killed off her pseudo-girlfriend in Left Behind. :doge Cheap impact.

I'm not gonna deny it sounds cheap on paper, but again, story elements have to be judged in the greater context of the plot, the tone, and all the corollaries of a story.
It drives me nuts when people complain that characters are just turned into "tools" or "objects", because that's what a character, within a story, is supposed to be.
And that's where a lot of these stupid "tv-tropes" style complains usually stem from, you extrapolate the character as separate from the story, when really, it's all just gears in the same mechanism.  :yeshrug

Again, as far as revenge plot goes, i think killing your love interest is about as trite as you could go (maybe next to killing off your kid  :thinking.. even John Wick had to deviate on "puppy"  :lol) but we'll see how they go about it.
After all humanity's been telling the same couple of stories with different frosting on them, for a while now.  ::)

There are ways you could go to make it not as obvious.
For example use the past game's experience (of the other girl dying) to blindside both Ellie and the audience into expecting something, and then pull the rug from under them.
It's not like the repetition of a theme can't be used to good effect.
Or you could go like Jonathan Glazer's Birth, where you find out the idea of a person, and the reality that comes out after their death, clash on the protagonist and their delusion.

Of course if they just use it to move through the usual stages of "revenge is a poison blah blah", i'm skeptical they'll be able to extract much juice from that angle.

Sony is automatically refunding TLOU2 and Iron Man VR pre-orders.   :leon

At least Sony tries to delve into an issue, Microsoft just makes everything generic and as awkward as possible if Gears 5 and HALO 5 are anything to go by.

I mean, Marcus talking to the Female Clinton President about a miscarriage is something I never expected to see in my Gears dudebro shoot bang.  :lol

I'm the one defending LoU here, but what are they "delving into" exactly? So far Last of Us hasn't really moved away from the most basic clichès of the genre.
These games are still packaged to be consumed and digested easily by a mass market, they'll never "delve" into anything.
They're just smarter in how to tackle a modern, mature market than Microsoft has been with their games tonally stuck in 2005.
See: Dad of War compared to God Of War 1 through Ascention.
