Which is still...insane. I never knew this and I think a whooooole lot of people whose taxpayer money is going towards this had no idea 50% of the entire city budgets are being paid to over-policing. Not sure if it'll make a difference as just another reason to piss people off, but yeah that is fucked up priorities for the city budget.

Does anyone know when policing became such a huge part of city budgets? Has it always been like this since 1776? Or was there some point in time when the police took over the cities and held the mayors and politicians hostage and began extorting all the money they can out of them?

The reason why school districts aren't on the city's budget is because they're special districts run independently from the city. That also mean they're bound by city boundaries. LAUSD services other cities in L.A. for instance for schools.

I'm actually setting up a "mirror" digital identity over the next few weeks; Gmail forwarding to Proton Mail, getting regular Google Takeout exports and storing them in Dropbox (vs. Google Drive), and doing some other things in case Google randomly nukes my account or I decide to pull the trigger on ditching them... I literally run my entire life through my Google Account/Gmail so I've realized how stupid it is to have it as a single point of failure for my life.

That said, for the time being I still intend to have Google be what I primarily run my digital identity from (vs. Proton Mail+Dropbox+self-hosted domain), since I trust Google to get security right a little more and still have (general) faith in how they've handled political matters so far. I've bought two Titan USB keys and enrolled in Advanced Account Protection, and I also generally appreciate the synergy between all their services.

But, since my opinion on Google can always change, I've decided having an escape hatch isn't a bad idea either.

All this to say, point taken.

You can actually see the hurt in that cops face, that feeling of betrayal for his attempt at the genuinely human gesture to that protestor: being proud of your kids.  It almost makes me sad for him, as he could very well be outstanding police and has never broken the law even while shielded by his position.  But that’s a very sharply pointed “almost”, because there are just too many bad police in the mix, and they keep being supported and protected by those presumably good cops through their unions and massaged or outright falsified testimonies.

It always leads me back to where I start anytime I go down that thought pattern: fuck the police.  If there were enough good ones out there that were true believers in law enforcement and doing the job as it’s supposed to be done, they’d be speaking up and speaking out against the rest of those gangsters with badges, even considering the high personal cost that follows.
