There is no difference because me going out could get someone else killed too. I go in a car, I could crash and wipeout an entire classroom of kids. We made decisions every day with weighing the odds of something happening and determine if the risk is worth taking. This really is no different. I live in one of the highest vaccinated places in the US. Hell, over 50% of people 16 and older have gotten the booster here. Everyone wears masks, and we all take this shit seriously.

Me seeing my family, who are retried so they don't really go anywhere and are all vaccinated and boosted, combined with my family who will have been home for the last 9 days in isolation, fully vaccinated, boosted for those who are allowed to receive it but those who haven't have been recently vaccinated because they are finally allowed, will have an EXTREMELY low risk and odds of any of us getting it. Is it still possible? Yes. Is there an increased risk compared if we don't? Yes. Is that risk highly unlikely, you're damn right it is and I guarantee you I'm not the only one in this thread in a similar situation who are approaching it this way only to have people in this thread sit on a high horse trying to shame people and wag their finger at them.

Finished Metroid Dread this morning.... Hollow Knight is better in every aspect.

Lebron posts meme comparing Covid to the flu / cold

The reason for the former: "Do we really need a reaction thread for every single user that plays a brand-new game? Go post in the OT like everyone else has been. This isn't a LTTP situation."

Dread came out over two months ago. The OT is now trudging along in hangouts - I posted there on the 18th, and there have been 16 posts since. The Metroid Dread vs. Hollow Knight thread was thoughtful, high effort and a perfectly valid and timely starting point for a compare and contrast sort of discussion about Dread's relative merits, and it was actually nice to see the enthusiastic back and forth that resulted (I was surprised when I saw it had already hit 6 pages).

ResetEra is a user-driven enterprise. The specter of someone playing a game that came out a couple months ago and feeling strongly enough about it to make a quality thread is hardly something to be feared. It's not some dangerous precedent that's going to result in constant reaction threads for all new releases going forward (imagine if we had that engaged a userbase these days). And while there was some thread whining coming from a place of sensitivity to criticism, I didn't see a single person ask the thread to be closed on the basis that the OT has a monopoly on all non-newsy Dread discussion.

So yeah, in my eyes, closure seemed arbitrary and counterproductive.

Finally, reason for the other closure: "If someone makes an article then make a thread, but these 'oh look what x person said on social media' threads are exhausting and pointless. Just because someone makes a post you don't like doesn't make it thread worthy."

Okay, so in that first closure, we had some odd catastrophizing going on, along with a mischaracterization of Dread's newness and how active its OT is. Now we have another example of moderation-by-increasingly-uncharitable-reasoning: there is so much that might make it worthwhile to discuss someone of Lebron's profile posting memes with strong covid skeptic vibes, it is actually totally irrelevant whether the OP dug the meme or not. And in a lot of cases centering an actual article is a good idea, absolutely, but the thing about such a blatantly notable instance of "look what x person said on social media" is that it's obviously going to result in a million articles, mostly all saying the same thing as we are and providing no useful clarification or grounding.

Here's what these closures look like to me: arbitrary reasoning when the actual impetus for closing a thread is just a low bandwidth for heated discussion. You're increasingly defaulting to closing threads and shutting down discussion entirely when some amount of conflict arises, or maybe when someone is being too negative in your eyes, or maybe when you're just personally exhausted by a thread's content. I pick these two examples out because, like I said, it's just a fun (and perhaps demonstrative) coincidence that they were the last threads I posted in, but this is a trend I've been picking up on for awhile now.

The takeaway is that you need to double down on centering the user, letting us lead these discussions without heavy handed interference to a larger degree, and in the meantime stop leaning so heavily on thread closures as a moderation tool. My perception of ResetEra's userbase is that it's a bit more chill lately in terms of size and sheer activity, and I'm honestly not seeing the imperative to narrow the space for discussion in the way these thread closures have.

If someone wants to post about a new game and how it compares to another, I don't see why that's just a reaction thread

If anything wouldn't jumping into the OT to talk up Hollow Knight be seen as a derail, or at least a dick move if people are there trying to talk about Dread?

Seems like there is room for people to talk about Dread in the OT and room for people to discuss the differences between Hollow Knight and Dread in that thread

I think we should be doing as much as we can to encourage users who take the time to write long and thoughtful OPs. If we keep locking threads like that people will stop making them and activity will decline even more

The only moderation I think was needed was to reword the thread title, as it is slightly more antagonistic than it needs to be. The title frames the thread in a way that makes it seem like it's going to shit all over Dread. A more neutral title would have led to better discussion

I pretty much only come here to discuss games, and most OTs are dead after a few months, or they're just used by people looking for advice and tips, and not people actually discussing the games and their merits

If a thread isn't just some random Twitter trolls thoughts or a thread where people are trolling or being a dick to each other, then it probably doesn't need to be closed and can die on it's own like most threads do

I’d like to comment on the girlfriend reviews thread. It was locked because of a large number of reports. But the thread made it to less than 200 posts. I do wonder how many reports there were truly. But more importantly Is that a few members were able to drive by saying things like “racist assholes” and they were able to hijack the thread and get it closed. Is it ok to talk about girlfriend reviews here? If someone doesn’t want us discussing it seems like there’s a very easy way to get those threads locked. No members were banned or warned so it’s not like there’s any disincentive.

Can you please let me know if this topic is not allowed here?

This is one of those movies that is going to lose its luster once the honeymoon phase is over. The Best Picture campaign is just laughable thinking about it. I'm just bewildered at its positive reception. After a rewatch, this movie is just aggressively mediocre.

I don't think a single character had any significant growth in this "trilogy": Ned is just the standard Marvel comedic relief, MJ is just Peter's girlfriend (what a total waste of Zendaya), and Aunt May is ultimately wasted as a "mentor". Tobey Maguire is just there to collect a check and honestly, I can't blame him. Garfield is great, though. The incessant jokes undercut any possible emotional developments such as the one in the classroom involving Ned (you know which one). There's a surprisingly emotional moment that happens halfway through the movie, but it's ruined since the movie decides to cut to something else that completely fails to provide any tension whatsoever (it's similar to a scene in Into the Spider-Verse but it's ineffective here). After that emotional moment, the movie proceeds to spend five minutes focusing on pure fan service so that the audience can clap like seals at the soulless nostalgia forcibly placed into this film, and THEN we cut back to the emotional crux of this film like wtf? And the reasons as to why some of the villains are there are just so...incomplete? Why the hell is Sandman here? Why is Electro's character completely different than his character in TASM2? Don't even get me started on the Lizard. Also, I don't want to be that guy, but why is Doc Ock the butt of the joke for like half the movie? Each moment feels so unearned that it's almost insulting just how convenient everything is (Ned learning magic, Doctor Strange (a world-class doctor/wizard) losing to high school geometry (lol), Peter's identity being revealed only to miraculously serve as a plot device in rolling in the fan service and nothing more). The action sequences are ugly and/or boring. There's nothing memorable here as even the final battle is a dimly-lit snooze fest. The direction is the worst offender. Visually, this shit is bland. Raimi's films had style. Webb's films (while leaning more towards a more realistic and "gritty" approach) had style. Watt's trilogy doesn't. Everything is just so unremarkable here.

It pains me to say this, but it feels as if the suits are now looking at each MCU movie and drawing a line from Point A and Point B, where they proceed to throw a dart at the board to figure out how they'll get there and fill out the blanks.

Nothing in the middle matters anymore in the MCU; the only thing that matters is what lies at the end.
