I could not be less of a Musk fan (and I'm THRILLED it looks as though the Twitter purchase won't go through) but saying stuff like Musk has nothing to do with Tesla or SpaceX's success is just a ludicrous and flat out incorrect statement. He's literally the guy in charge making all the decisions. That's what a CEO does, without him there would be no Tesla or SpaceX worth talking about (even leaving aside the fact that he actively funded them to start/in the extreme early days). The tremendous success they've had is directly a result of Elon and his actions and decisions within the respective company over the past decade (insufferable though he may be) and anyone arguing against that honestly is just demonstrating they don't have any idea how businesses work or are run.

People over estimate a CEOs worth, esp when you look holistically on the decision that are made which quite frankly almost anyone with even minimal knowlege Of A said industry can do. He’s a good salesman, got a ton of funding etc. Businesses are still run based on having the right people up and down the line and no one person is responsible for a businesses success. All that said he can get some credit. But the large amount he has been given has been ridiculous.
And who do you think choose those people? Made the decisions about how much to spend in each department to staff it, what the priorities are for the company (particularly in the early days), etc etc etc. Being in charge means picking the right people, putting them in the right place, making the right (long term) decisions based on what is relayed to you about various situations, and literally hundreds of thousands of other absolutely critical decisions about all aspects of the business. People can absolutely overestimate the impact a CEO has a company this is true...but not in the instance where the CEO in question brought the companies from (essentially) inception to multi billion (or in TSLA's case, 100s of billions) of dollars of valuation to become dominant in what are essentially two completely new industries. I mean it's just flat out wrong to suggest that Elon isn't a phenomenal businessman and entrepreneur. There is no legitimate argument against that whatsoever, and people only say "oh he's not responsible for the success" because they (understandbly) hate him. But that doesn't make it true.

It's not salesmanship if he literally grew the damn company from essentially nothing (don't turn around and do the "but he didn't even found Tesla" thing. He didn't, that is true, but it was essentially nothing when he bought it versus what it is now with a $750 billion market cap). Elon is for all intents and purposes the founder who made the companies a success, that doesn't make anything you say (union busting, the fact that he was funded with apartheid money, that he is a complete piece of shit etc) untrue. All are accurate. Would the companies be in better hands with a different CEO? There is definitely a non-zero chance that would be the case (especially in more recent years). Would the companies have been as successful with a different CEO all along? The answer is unequivocally no, otherwise we'd have many companies as successful as TSLA or SpaceX, and we simply do not, they're in pretty rarified air in terms of the success they've had with only a handful of companies achieving similar levels of success.Such things don't happen with just anyone running the company.
