Once there was a farm in South Los Angeles that sprouted among warehouses and railroad tracks. In the shadow of downtown skyscrapers, avocado trees and beans and tomatillos took root and gave 350 families a bountiful harvest and a gathering place. But the plot of land at 41st and Alameda — estimated at 14 acres — was not the farmers’ to keep. Allowed to garden there by the city after it took possession under eminent domain, the land was eventually sold back to a previous owner. The farmers could leave — or buy the property from him for about $16 million.

The 2 1/2-year battle that erupted in 2006 played out like an opera. The South Central Farmers, as the gardeners named themselves, felt betrayed by city politicians. The property owner, Ralph Horowitz, believed — rightly — that he was being unfairly vilified for simply trying to protect his investment. Despite a promise of millions from the Annenberg Foundation, a deal to buy the property and keep the farm going fell through, giving way to the ugly sight of bulldozers plowing crops under. But life went on. Some farmers moved farther south to land that L.A. City Councilwoman Jan Perry helped them find. Others — who kept the South Central Farmers name — moved to land near Bakersfield, where they continue to grow produce that they sell at farmers’ markets and in several Whole Foods stores. And some quit farming altogether.

Now, nearly five years later, the property that ignited so much drama sits vacant, awash in wild grasses. But it is for sale, and the South Central Farmers want it back.

Nobody is standing in their way. But nobody is helping them either. Horowitz is asking about $18 million for the property. Perry, the City Council member in whose district the parcel lies, says she would like it to go to the buyer who would bring the greatest number of jobs to people in the immediate area.

Meanwhile, Perry — who is running for mayor — should at least meet with the farmers to hear their proposal and consider whether to advocate for them. She says she supports community gardens and has created two wetland areas in her district. That’s good. But this piece of land is like no other in her district — a sprawling, flat expanse. Many people were heartened by the presence of the urban farm amid the concrete. Perry herself, in a 2003 letter, hailed the garden as “a vibrant oasis.” If a deal with a foundation can be worked out, wouldn’t it be good to have something growing there again?

One tough position Perry took came in 2006 when 350 families were evicted from their 14-acre community farm in South L.A.  The land’s owner, developer Ralph Horowitz, had promised to open factories and bring jobs to the area.

Perry’s role in the closing of the South Central farm was criticized in the 2008 documentary “The Garden.”

But Perry says she has made amends with the families involved.

“I have some pretty amazing experiences with the gardeners or the farmers,” Perry said, “We’ve become friends, they’re all down at the the new farm down further south off of Avalon.”

Perry is currently the only woman on LA’s City Council. If Price takes over her seat the next City Council could be all male. Perry says diversity was a consideration that made endorsing a successor a difficult choice.

“Sure it worries me,” Perry said. “I think diversity is important, but you can’t just elect someone based on their race or their ethnicity or their gender and I think you have to be analytical about it.”

City officials determined that the land originally parceled for park development couldn’t be used for its intended purpose because of dangerous pollution and traffic in the area. So, in an amendment proposed by Councilwoman Jan Perry, the city would use the $3.6 million donation to finance new playground and exercise equipment, a basketball court, and building renovations for a South Central housing project.

“This is and has been a privately owned piece of land since 2003. Additionally, this is an industrially zoned land in the middle of the Alameda corridor. The city has the opportunity to enhance recreation and park spaces for people in the immediate area and support job creation through this amendment. At a time when unemployment is in excess of 20 percent for the area, this is an important goal,” said Perry in an official statement after the council’s decision.

The proposal was passed unanimously by a vote of 12-0.

I don’t know why, but wearing jewelry of any kind bothers the hell out of me. I’ve been married for 11 years, and I haven’t worn my wedding ring for like the past 8. I wear it around my neck on a rope/string thingy, but that’s the most I can tolerate.

When I wore my ring I would always play with it, throwing it in the air and catching it, or spinning it on my desk, or countless other forms of fidgeting. And then I panic and freak out when it’s warm out or something and it gets stuck on my finger. Like an irrational fear that it would cut off my circulation or something ridiculous. I did lose it at one point and bought a new one, but I did eventually find it (apparently it fell off my finger into a bag of plastic bags and it took months before I found the damn thing).

But yeah, rings, necklaces (other than the current thing holding my wedding ring), or anything of the sort, I just can’t do it. I had some electrician and engineering buddies that didn’t wear their rings on their fingers, but that was for safety IIRC.

I read this article the other day, and there was a lot of really disturbing shit within it. Really bitter, abusive stuff that should have made the editor go "I probably shouldn't publish this." Like she admits that she read up on transgender experiences and learned that HRT can lead to infertility, so she stayed with her partner to encourage them on their path, despite not wanting to be with them anymore, not to support them but because she wanted to bear their child and wanted to ensure her partner could never have one with anyone else.

That's disturbingly fucked up behaviour.

Oh, I read it and felt really sympathetic towards her. She was admitting personal things that she wasn't exactly proud of. It was from a place of confusion and, in an admittedly selfish way, deep hurt. In terms of having the kid, I guess it was them wanting to continue the relationship and their idea of what the future was going to be by having a kid? Kind of like when someone's partner dies and they then have IVF with their sperm/egg. It's like keeping them alive. So for them I think it was keeping the relationship alive?

I was surprised so many people had an issue with that piece. I thought it was quite sweet, and really lovely that in the end this person was still friends with their partner. I think we'd be in a lot better place if more people viewed trans stuff like this woman. I'd imagine the vast, vast majority of people would absolutely hate their ex if this happened to them and burn all bridges. Probably end up being some extreme TERF troll. Not many people would go to therapy, grow as a person and come to accept it like she did.

If humans were better at assessing risk, we'd be terrified of the car ride to the airport, and not the flight itself.

It's not her fault that she didn't know a pit full of foam was inadequate to break her fall, especially because in 99% of instances, that's what pits full of foam are supposed to do.

But I would assume she can assess that it isn't a pitt if she walked across it? Like. I've been in proper foam pits. They're deep, and there's no elegant way to traverse them. You flail around and hope you end up where you're hoping to go.
