That's where 'Blue no matter who' or 'Red or I'd rather be dead' gets you.

Oh well, this is happening across the world, elections held in the middle of the pandemic that focused on a single short term issue: the pandemic or a leader that became popular/unpopular because of that pandemic.
Also the press loves the pandemic, almost as exciting as a war especially now that we're implementing apartheid for the unvaccinated.

They ask where I am, I'm not one to describe my toilet situation vividly but I felt like I had to explain where I have been gone for 10 mins, so I told them I was at the basement at their home and I'm just attending to an important phone call (or something, can't remember the excuse) the point of if it was to not admit I was taking the biggest dump of my life. I put the phone down and proceed.

I'm not gonna lie, I prefer to poop at home or work. But I never felt the need to sneak out and then make up an excuse to hide the fact that I was pooping.

Remember when they did an episode on Israel and Palestine and both sided things?

"Israelis stop destroying the homes of Palestinians and kicking them out".

"Palestinians stop throwing stones at Tanks and soldiers who are destroying your homes and kicking you out".

:stahp

when you're trying to dunk on a kids tv show from the 90s for (CORRECTLY, YOU STUPID FUCK) 'both sidesing' that there might actually be a lot of fucking nuance in a situation as complicated as Israel / Palestine, because, yeah, people who believe in the development and protection of a Jewish nation might not be the good guys, but the fucking military wing of hamas aren't either, and they're not 'throwing stones at tanks'

e:
Serious question, is this amount of sheer fucking idiocy purely down to Israel being backed by the bible thumpers in the GOP plus their general post 9/11 background islamic paranoia, as a knee jerk 'Don't Do What Donny Don't Does'?

Partially, is my impression. But feel that has growing since a while as people paranoia moves to other targets and people need someone to blame for the shitshow of Middle East policies. Israel government being willing to accept the Bible Thumpers and getting on CCP es que tactics probably also doesn’t help.

Nintendo fans have started to leave and are on different boards now. Lately its been hard to express any positivity towards Nintendo without someone who probably has no intent or interest in playing the games anyway just coming and bashing you. The trolling is quite subtle but tiring. It's better to just stick to boards that are Nintendo based, where topics about stuff like Mario Party thrive without dozens of comments putting the series down.

Look how far back we’ve gone in civil rights for Nintendo fans.

Getting the people help so they don’t try to break into your home? What will incarceration do? They’ll get out of jail with fines they can’t pay then go back to stealing to pay said fines.
The reason why I think we need more police is because when I have dialed 9/11 in the past they take about 2 hours to even get to me. I could be killed or raped by that time. I live in a bad neighborhood in Stockton California. I think a lot of liberals like you are so out of touch that you can lecture me as if I'm the problem because I want to feel safe in my own home which I never get to btw.

Quote from: Kayla
Quote from: Vermillion
Saying this in an appropriate way is tough, but I will try. Anecdotally, women I've spoken to in major cities have the most concerns about homeless people stalking or otherwise sexually harassing them. Presumably, like Kayla.
There is a massive homeless problem in my city and this is 100% the case. In public I'm likely to be harassed and stalked by homeless people. At home where I live it's directly in front of some trains tracks where homeless people constantly leave trash and make fires. I can't even sit in my backyard without being threatened to be "raped" by people that peak over my fence. These same people have tried to attempt to break into my home for years and its always different people doing it. The police don't even care and respond whenever they feel like it. But also people trying to suggest a city like Stockton needs less police is just so fucking crazy to me and I won't take this seriously at all.

My preferred method to address this issue would be to give everyone $1000, but this isn't realistically possible in our current time. More police/better funding for police seems to be the only option that I can realistically vote on. I mean give me some other choices on the ballot??

ITT weird hate for a dude who grew up - at best - lower middle class, made a success of himself, and then spent a lot of time trying to combat child obesity (a well recognised western problem) as well as investing a lot of personal time and money into providing opportunities for disadvantaged youths to make something of themselves and break the cycle of poverty as being 'out of touch' and 'classist' by upper middle class - at worst - people on a videogame enthusiast forum who just really fucking love their chicken tendies

I understand being scared and wanting someone to do something. But falling for a knee-jerk reaction that will ultimately not improve the situation (and is likely to make it worse) isn't helpful and I'm not going to pretend that it is.

it amazes me how people look at that gang massively violating civil rights and say “I want more of that, you know, to feel safe”

the way homeless people are being talked about in this thread is gross. The way people are talking about Kayla needing to feel safe because she’s a woman is gross to me, too. Everyone should feel safe, not just because of their gender. The framing by some of the posters here is very “protect our women from the blacks, transgenders & homeless” fear mongering.

why don’t we take better care of our homeless populations so they don’t feel the need to do crime instead of pretending more money for military grade equipment is going to make police respond any quicker when called?

Legit wondering, how will more police help the issue of a park full of homeless people?
People like that usually don’t think that deep. They think police are a magical solution for “undesirables” and more police will magically make problems go away. When in reality all data points to it making things worse.

Quote from: Thordinson
They won't. Most people just don't want to see the homeless people near them. It's about optics rather than outcomes.

Anyone who has time to watch a 20 minute video critique about a chef's opinion of chicken nuggets shouldn't be thumbing their nose at classists.

I mean... I don't want to harp on the THE WORLD IS NOT 'MURICA card too much either, but his campaign was specifically about UK schools 'cutting costs' by buying cheap nutritionally questionable frozen meals because it was quicker / easier rather than because it was the best bang for buck for the students, which has absolutely fuck all to do with classism, and as he proved wasn't actually cheaper than providing a better more nutritious fresher alternative.
If anything, it becomes more important that poor kids get at least one fucking solid nutritional meal a day, not less.

Like, we just saw a whole fucking thing during the pandemic, where the poorest members of society were literally fucking starving because they weren't going to school and getting that one square a day he fought for and successfully achieved in establishing.

You know, RE would probably classify me as misogynist because I like anime tiddies but even I understand why a woman might be a little more concerned about rape threats than a dude, who likely doesn't receive any.

People are dumb. Yes less police pls. Until I need to call 911.
Where are the police, my tax dollars!
At least the non armed homeless outreach team will be there in approx 55 min with sandwiches and hot cocoa and pamphlets for the nearest shelter.

Is this a joke post? What is the preferred solution to people trying to break into my home?
Do you realize how many police there would have to be for them to patrol your block every night, more police or throwing more money at police would not solve your issue. It sucks but they aren't going to make break-ins a priority unless they get really really lucky and catch the person in the act or something if they are right there.

The best thing you can do is reinforce your home and get some cameras, and turn in the footage and hope they build a case, you can also send the footage to local news stations to try to get attention on the issue, you can help organize a neighborhood watch, you can install alarm systems, all of those will likely be more effective than relying on the police to stop the break-ins

I'm not saying that Era live in a sheltered life bubble, but for most major western cities with even a slightly left leaning governance and a bit of money (which I really have to assume California counts as) homelessness is a mostly solved problem for people who through no fault of their own have hit economic hardship and need a domicile to get back on their feet, whether thats through government initiatives, charitable support, or some combination of the two.

What's not solved is the mentally ill refusing to take their meds / substance abusers refusing treatment / violent anti social types of homeless who get kicked out of shelters because they are threatening or attacking staff and other residents, and who would rather be on the streets than live by the rules those places have, and who, yeah, you're not going to feel comfortable meeting in a dark alley late at night.

Adding more police does reduce crime.

Whether you're an activist who's been shouting "defund the police" in the streets, or a conservative who flies a "thin blue line" flag in front of your house, if you're looking for someone to rile you up with a megaphone, Williams is not your guy. In these hyperpolarized times, Williams stands apart in speaking the technical language of a wonk with the cool emotions of a data-cruncher.

Williams and his colleagues find adding a new police officer to a city prevents between 0.06 and 0.1 homicides, which means that the average city would need to hire between 10 and 17 new police officers to save one life a year. They estimate that costs taxpayers annually between $1.3 and $2.2 million. The federal government puts the value of a statistical life at around $10 million (Planet Money did a whole episode on how that number was chosen). So, Williams says, from that perspective, investing in more police officers to save lives provides a pretty good bang for the buck. Adding more police, they find, also reduces other serious crimes, like robbery, rape, and aggravated assault.

This has been known for a long time.

Yes but if you put that same municipal funding towards better roads, water systems, etc how many lives does that save? What is the more efficient use of funds?
