I'm not saying that Era live in a sheltered life bubble, but for most major western cities with even a slightly left leaning governance and a bit of money (which I really have to assume California counts as) homelessness is a mostly solved problem for people who through no fault of their own have hit economic hardship and need a domicile to get back on their feet, whether thats through government initiatives, charitable support, or some combination of the two.

What's not solved is the mentally ill refusing to take their meds / substance abusers refusing treatment / violent anti social types of homeless who get kicked out of shelters because they are threatening or attacking staff and other residents, and who would rather be on the streets than live by the rules those places have, and who, yeah, you're not going to feel comfortable meeting in a dark alley late at night.
Unfortunately this is not the case anymore.
We were certainly moving in that direction but the AirBnB / private investors(TM) seeking financial independence has put a dent in that progress.
Why house a homeless person (or anyone really) when you can charge astronomical rents for housing tourists or students.

Getting the people help so they don’t try to break into your home? What will incarceration do? They’ll get out of jail with fines they can’t pay then go back to stealing to pay said fines.
The reason why I think we need more police is because when I have dialed 9/11 in the past they take about 2 hours to even get to me. I could be killed or raped by that time. I live in a bad neighborhood in Stockton California. I think a lot of liberals like you are so out of touch that you can lecture me as if I'm the problem because I want to feel safe in my own home which I never get to btw.

Saying this in an appropriate way is tough, but I will try. Anecdotally, women I've spoken to in major cities have the most concerns about homeless people stalking or otherwise sexually harassing them. Presumably, like Kayla.
There is a massive homeless problem in my city and this is 100% the case. In public I'm likely to be harassed and stalked by homeless people. At home where I live it's directly in front of some trains tracks where homeless people constantly leave trash and make fires. I can't even sit in my backyard without being threatened to be "raped" by people that peak over my fence. These same people have tried to attempt to break into my home for years and its always different people doing it. The police don't even care and respond whenever they feel like it. But also people trying to suggest a city like Stockton needs less police is just so fucking crazy to me and I won't take this seriously at all.

My preferred method to address this issue would be to give everyone $1000, but this isn't realistically possible in our current time. More police/better funding for police seems to be the only option that I can realistically vote on. I mean give me some other choices on the ballot??

We’re really out here lecturing to a woman who can’t leave her own home without being subjected to rape threats. The fuck do any of us know what that’s like?

Ree: Fuck chuds and incels!
Also Ree: *talk women down like the incels they are*
Also, that Thordinson user has been in a lot of threads being all   :ego on being the only one helping his community with surviving yet here he is talking a woman down.

Also because of le plandemic a lot of homeless shelters have been closed and the hobo's thrown out on the street.
This happened in Calgary Canada for example but also many other places.

After making some good progress we're now moving backwards on a lot of these poverty issues.
It will only get worse, there's talk of 'energy poverty' emerging in Europe, people who simply can't afford their energy bills or have to choose between food or energy.
There was also the malnourished kids in the UK, who depend on school lunches for most of their nutrition but those were cut.

The problem with poverty is, that a lot of people are ashamed and thus keep it a secret.
I remember that in 2008 the first food banks opened in the Netherlands and people were shocked it was necessary.
We now have 227 food banks and 160k people (that's ~1% of the population) had to make use of them.

So I have a friend who just posted their family's Halloween costumes for the year and it's Batman themed. They're going as Batman, their partner is Robin, but they're dressing their barely 2 year old child as the Joker and something just feels off about it.

Like, the Joker is a mass murderer. It seems weird to dress your kid up as that, especially when they're too young to consent or know what's going on.

I think I'd be more okay with it if it was the BTAS Joker, but it's the Joaquin Phoenix Joker, too. It just feels really inappropriate.

Am I overthinking it? The comments section on the post is overwhelmingly positive so I get that it's probably just me

They’re still arguing over whether “defund the police” is an effective slogan? They spent last year having threads about how defund the police doesn’t mean defunding the police.

So they are very comfortable BUT they are TIGHT. Like there is ZERO doubt about what's going on down there.. Honestly i'm not leaving the house in this.

Anyway the lesson is, try out pants before you buy them.

yeah, this is a weird one, because there were multiple safety nets available if she'd ever asked for one, even in spite of being a foreign student and not necessarily eligible for UK social security; there would have been some reserved rent controlled university accomodation available from students who had dropped out, there would have been hardship funds available through the Student union, and there would probably have even been bursaries or zero interest loans available through the faculty itself if at any point she had said she needed assistance.

Pretty much. I've no doubt that Leto was probably getting into younger models DM's, but thats a firm difference from accusations of allegedly fucking a 14yr old.

But it's the classic Reee activity of constantly bringing up accusations for people you hate. Whilst getting told to pipe down and stop derailing for Reee sacred cows

In a sequence where they talk to the Nova World mind you can fill out a application to join the core. On it it asks what planet you from one of the choices is "Urf". The well known and lowkey racist meme from ID4

Some people are daring to say that a possibly-maybe reference to the movie Independence Day might not be racist. Bans will arrive shortly.

EDIT: It has come to my attention that 5 years ago the same developers posted artwork to Twitter that may have possibly been downplaying the Black Lives Matter slogan. Case closed. Definitely racist. I'm just so tired.

Slavern since I know you read this:

The misspelling and mispronunciation of "Earth" is a well worn trope in comedy sci-fi; shown as recently as 2020 in the Cartoon Network TV Series "Elliot from Earth" and shown much earlier than the ID4 meme with The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy book series. I'm sure there are earlier references but that's the earliest I can think of.

Edit: Also, I don't even think the ID4 meme is lowkey racist, it's just racist. Smith clearly enunciates "Earth" in the clip in question, racist people just remember him saying "earf" because they're racist.

It it was spelled "Earf" then sure, I can get that. That's much more clearly a reference to the meme and I can see how people would be uncomfortable with that.

But when it's spelled "Urf" and is a take on a common joke, you're just looking for something to be upset about.

It also shows how narrow his worldview is if he thinks this throwaway joke in a sci-fi video game is specifically a reference to a long dead and not very widely shared meme from 10 (15?) years ago.

At least some voices of reason in that thread

Of course you also have geniuses like this

I’m baffled at the amount of people dismissing this. It’s been a known racist meme for years.

The “that’s a reach” posts are borderline gaslighting.

Woah, just watching KKKona's stream of The Simpson's Hit & Run, and I can't believe they have a character named Kang, a not so subtle reference to the racist meme "We Wuz Kangs and Shit".

The meme is a picture of him with the cigar in his mouth as he says it the line, so it makes sense to change it to "earf" just for consistency/humour value. It would make exactly the same amount of sense if the character was white. Maybe there's some accidental racial connotations that non-American audiences might not understand, but all the people saying "he doesn't actually say it like that in the movie", as though that matters, are missing the point as well.

Yeah the movie has the Mandela effect when I watch it because in my imagination he smokes a cigar as he kicks the alien.
But that isn't actually in the movie.

Not in the version released in this universe at least.
