Can I ask what would be achieved by adding more time on to this women's sentence? This person will likely never again be a threat to society. She has lost her job, her freedom and reputation. I understand the disparity that exists with how she was treated and judged. It is inexcusable that a person's gender or ethnicity would factor into our justice system but Increasing this persons imprisonment as a way to make up for these injustices is not justice. It is vengeance. This vindictive desire will not end the cycle of discrimination and inequality. It will only increase the suffering and hatred in our society. I want things to be better, to improve. I just don't see how this would do anything but make things worse. (Sorry for being a preachy asshole.)

I think the poster is arguing for less imprisonment in general which I do agree with. I think they are saying they'd rather have Black folks get the leniency that white folks do rather than imprisoning white folks for as long as Black folks get sentenced for. At least, that's what I believe they are trying to say.

Though I completely understand why people would want a longer sentence in this particular case.

We do this every time. Cheering whenever leniency is had for white folks in situations like this, especially when minorities are these folks' victims, or coming in to berate people who are upset with flagrant miscarriages of justice, just because you're against the prison industrial complex doesn't actually do anything for advocacy of leniency for Black people in the prison system. This is especially apparent when you consider the absolute dearth of advocacy on Black folks' behalf on this forum that is fully divorced from situations where white individuals may finally receive some semblance of imprisonment. No one actually cares about the prison system until some white's neck is on the chopping block, so you're just reinforcing the status quo at this point. Basically, learn how to read the room.

I absolutely agree that posters shouldn't berate others who are upset at this. It's understandable why most would be.

I don't agree that posters who are against imprisonment, including myself, only care when it's a white person who got the leniency. I don't agree that I am reinforcing the status quo by being a prison abolitionist stating my opinion against imprisonment in general and actively doing work in my community to help those who are incarcerated and their families.

I know you're good folks, Thordinson. But ultimately I disagree that posters who bring up issues with prisons in threads where white people get leniency are doing the same advocacy work for Black, Indigenous, and other minorities who in such an instance would've been fucked. The discussion just isn't there on the forum, which is a separate issue from what you are personally doing.
