I was actually beaten up by 24 years old, group of 3 at the age of 16 because one of them was intent me and a group of kids the year below had thrown a burger at them. I stepped in and said they're kids. Apparently they took that as me not being one and decided to go to town on me. For something that none of us did and I'm still convinced never even happened at all and they just felt tough.

If I'd made rape threats I would absolutely expect to be beaten up for it. Is that somehow worse than the threat of rape? I'm going with no here. We can stop with the excuses. We need to be intolerant of misogyny in gaming at every level, especially the systems that allow those behaviors to be financially incentivized,and focus less on each individual perpetrator since that impulse to focus in on someone as being emblematic of the problem at large absolves most people in their participation in the larger cultural forces that perpetuate it.

Apologies are just a first step; they don't do anything to actively take away from this persistent fog of pain you've added to by your actions. They're just a recognition of wrong-doing, if even done well. It needs to be followed up with two things: reparations to the aggrieved parties-- Donate some damn money to a relevant cause and use your platform to speak about it-- and a personal commitment to never do the offending action again. And that behavioral change has to be permanent. You don't get to slack off.

I think the general heat of our social spaces would be tempered appropriately if this was the reigning operating assumption. If you have the choice of storming out the door into the darkness, there should also exist the option to find your way back. But you have to make that journey on your own. Don't call me for directions.

Something really bugs me about the way contracting COVID has become a litmus test of who deserves sympathy.

It made a little more sense in the early months, and we were all locked down, and contracting the virus had a clearer connection to negligent behavior (unless you were an essential worker, exposed to the virus through no fault of your own, etc.).
