I had a hedgehog I shared with Era I got in April. Name was Gus. I did everything I knew to make a nice home for it, but he mysteriously died on July 1. He was fine that Wednesday, here’s video of him spinning on his wheel that day.

Within 24 hours he stopped eating, slowed down, and I found him collapsed on the floor of his cage. He would barely breathe or respond to touch. I put him in his warm bed area, hoping he would come out at night like usual to run around his cage. Instead, I woke up to finding him frozen in rigor mortise.

The breeder, knowing that I had only had the hedgehog for 3 months, gave me a new one. This one was albino, 6 weeks old and a baby, named Shiro. He seemed to enjoy Gus’ cage and Wednesday he saw the general vet at Banfield. They don’t have the equipment to examine him but they said he looked fine. Thursday he started to decay like Gus, stopping to eat, sleeping out in the open parts of his cage. He stopped coming out at night. Today he is so slow moving he’s responding to touch but just barely. Fearing Gus’ fate, I called 10 clinics and found one open exotic animal hospital that treats hedgehogs and takes emergency visits. I’ve brought him to the hospital and they’re examining him now. $160 but at least I’ll have peace of mind in a diagnostic on what is killing my hedgehogs…

What I suspect is going on now is that the air conditioning in my house is triggering hibernation for hedgehogs, which can be deadly, because their metabolism grinds to a halt and they burn through all their fat and stop eating. The primary vet said that shouldn’t be a concern though because some owners here in WA even keep them outside their house 🧐 but the internet says otherwise, that it’s common and dangerous. I had a reptile heated mat under blankets and a hood in the 4th floor of his cage but he was too young to know/remember to sleep there, so it’s possible his extended time outside the warm area triggers hibernation. That would explain Gus’ sudden decay because it happened after I installed smart home automation to trigger our AC to get a couple degrees colder in prep for the summer. But our primary vet acted like that wasn’t a concern. Then again he’s not an expert in exotics so maybe these hospital vets will have better advice on what to do. I went ahead and bought a 150 W heating lamp pair to install on the cage to heat the cage so that even if he sleeps outside his hidey-house with reptile mat and blankets that he will stay warm. If this problem is AC and hibernation, it’s really frustrating because the vet denied it was a problem and the breeder never mentioned it, and that’s a pretty fucking important concern. We keep it about 69F in the house.

Just looking for a place to share this, my friends are busy and it’s embarrassing to share that my second hedgehog in 2 months is dying…

Just because they can doesn't mean they should. There's so many options. Did you do any research before you purchased a hedgehog? I have converted a large plastic tote. The lid has mesh which is where the heat lamp sits and it keeps the heat in. The thermostat keeps it between 74-76.
Most food even from the pet shop isn't great. I use ORIJEN kitten food and I provide a variety of insects - meal worms, crickets etc and other variety of food eg eggs, chicken, pinkies.

Yes I did some research, there was a lot of information to parse with different opinions on what’s best and I had limited resources and access to exotic animal accommodations, I did my best. I’m not even going to respond to the rest because it’s just fodder for further antagonism.

I’m not about to go into courtroom style defense against judgment from posters that think they know everything about my situation and what I’ve done and have an agenda against the OP particularly in a sympathy/venting thread. 7. Hedgehogs need to be kept warm

Putting a hedgehog cage in a cold room isn’t a good idea, as the temperature in the cage falls rapidly. We have a big room at the back of our house that initially we thought would be fine for our hedgehog but this room even with heating is still cold in the winter months. In fact, during the colder months, we don’t use this room ourselves as it’s too cold for even us to sit or lounge around.

So for a hedgehog, it would be a dangerous room for them to reside in. Instead, our hedgehog lives with us in the main family room which is heated, with the heating coming on in the morning and early evening for a few hours a day, with the heating thermostat set to come on if the temperature drops below 64.5F (18C).

In an ideal environment the room where a hedgehog is housed, keeping the temperature between the ideal of 72F (22C) and 80F (26.5C) can be difficult as heating a room to stay between these temperatures can be expensive, especially if it’s throughout the day and night and across the year.

We have gas central heating and to keep the heating between these ideal temperatures over the colder months is prohibitively expensive. During the spring and summer months, the natural heat is adequate but some form of heating is required for the colder months.
Heating

Some owners tend to use a heat lamp to keep their hedgehog warm and these owners usually place their hedgehog in a vivarium, a glass-based cage. Plastic cage, on the other hand, is not suitable for heat lamps as there is a risk of fire, so if you have a plastic cage-like we do, then you could opt for a heat mat as we did.

We’ve placed the heat mat in his housing area so he can sleep on it, without the temperature falling below 72F (22C) as our heat mat has a thermostat linked to a thermometer placed inside the cage, so any changes in temperature automatically control the heat mat being on or switching itself off.

If you decide to opt for a heat lamp may be because you are going to use a vivarium to house your hedgehog, there are a few things to consider:

    make sure the heat lamp just emits heat and doesn’t emit any light, as the light will confuse the hedgehog and make them think it’s still daytime. This may limit them coming out to feed and exercise;
    the heat lamp needs to have a guard to protect the hedgehog from being burned as the heat lamp has a thermal bulb, and
    the heat lamp needs to be placed on top of the cage making sure it’s not near any plastic or wood, it can also be suspended from the top of the cage.

This is my second cage, for several reasons. It’s easy to be judgmental when you don’t have the all the facts. The fact is this thread is about my hedgehog going to the hospital. I just spent $500 on his care and ceramic heat lamps and you don’t know shit about what kind of research I’ve done or conversations I’ve had or my factors into this situation so if you’re going to be a prick just fucking leave. Even my vet gave me bad info

Hedgehogs are difficult pets. It's probably better to try a rabbit or a hamster first.

They mostly sleep/hide during the day and are active only at night.  Keeping them indoors is very difficult as it confuses them unless the conditions are just right.
They're very sensitive creatures too, which is why they crawl up into a ball if literally anything happens that upsets them.

Maybe it could work if you had like a big walled garden for them to run around in but I don't see how you can keep a Hedgehog as a pet otherwise.

Not to mention I'm not seeing any small toys, twigs, small blankets or leafs either.

No wonder this poor animal is stressed, that cage set-up is horrible.
Lesson number 1: always place the food and water close to the sleeping shelter.
He probably freaks out everytime he has to go search for his food all the way at the bottom of the cage.
Look at his tiny feet and then the big holes in the plastic flooring. Would you want gaps in the flooring of your kitchen?
