I honestly wish that every time someone says "Eh I am not interested in that game" the reply was "But you need to support the developers!!!!" was the response.
Just so people can understand what we have to deal with when homophobic, transphobic, etc games come out and we say we aren't going to get it.
This jumps out at me because it's a mod doing that thing Era loves to do--where you completely fabricate a situation that sounds like something that really happens, then use your argument against the fabricated thing as proof of your rightness. I don't think I've seen anyone, anywhere, using "think of the devs!" in an attempt to try to get people who do not want to buy HL to buy it. I've
only seen it in this context from people trying to justify their own purchase's impact by pointing out the layers of middlemen involved between the game and the great evil.
But "fuck the devs" isn't a compelling counter-argument (they've tried with that one evil design lead it just doesn't really seem to be catching on), so instead Era is now fixated on how people going "but the devs" are trying to
make them buy Evil Wizard Game.
The JKR thing is really highlighting how childish and black-and-white the morality at play here is--either thing is good or thing is bad, there's no possibility for disagreement in degree or impact. Their side is Good, the other side is Bad, and since all Bad is equally Bad they can just argue against whatever from the Bad side they want. Since they've decided buying HL is Taking A Moral Position, everyone else must also think so too and everyone else must believe they ought to buy it. Because thinking someone's choice on buying a video game is maybe not a definitive moral statement is inconceivable.
