The panic about twitter dying is a bit curious. Pretty anecdotal but going by my follows it's mainly Americans who talk about how it's basically over while for Europeans it's just another day.

Also, while I'm not really sure if Musk knows what he's doing, this could be an interesting experiment in how many workers a social media website really needs

Context of this screenshot (Succession): Kieran accidentally sent his dad a dick pic, and this was him realizing it

Also not really comparable. Twitter has one product, a flimsy social network.

At a high level, Google is search, Android and YouTube. Each one of those is bigger than Twitter by number of active users.

The OS development alone for Android and Chrome OS actually does require the engineers thrown at them. Fuchsia probably isn't long for this world though.

Be a Nintex-type

Be offered 3 months of free money to enjoy the holidays

Decline the offer, "Im hardcore, I will stay and make this app cool"

18 hours later, Musk demands that you be in SF within the next 4 hours or youre fired. You live 11 hours away and the next flight is tomorrow.

How long until

"twitter has suffered a massive hack / user data breach"

?

Foreign nations have been caught bribing Twitter employees in order to exfiltrate sensitive data on dissidents. This is a fact. Twitter employees were indicted.

Wonder how much easier that all is going to be now...

Elon is probably in the process of outsourcing much of the Twitter operations to India or some other cheap dev country if he hasn't already.

Those waiting for Twitter to go down will be dissapointed when he can find folks who will keep it running for $1 /hour

Cool, looks completely fair and balanced.  Note sure how any 'side' could have issue with this.  Wonder who Trump gets traded for.   Also remember how five pages back, people where like it's day one of the take over and he hasn't made any changes to the moderation policy, guess all the SJWs are over reacting, who would have though?

Going to be interesting to see if people like Kathy Griffin actually return to Twatter or not.

Having any semblance of pride or self respect world say absolutely not, but you just know someone like her has none and will be back to soak up all the attention from the sycophants and proclaiming she's doing it for democracy or some other shit...

Quote
“May harm our business” is an understatement. Failure to adhere to Apple and Google’s guidelines would be catastrophic, risking Twitter’s expulsion from their app stores and making it more difficult for billions of potential users to access Twitter’s services. This gives Apple and Google enormous power to shape the decisions Twitter makes.
Apple’s guidelines for developers are reasonable and plainly stated: They emphasize creating “a safe experience for users” and stress the importance of protecting children. The guidelines quote the Supreme Court justice Potter Stewart’s “I know it when I see it” quip, saying the company will ban apps that are “over the line.”

In practice, the enforcement of these rules is fraught.

In my time at Twitter, representatives of the app stores regularly raised concerns about content available on our platform. On one occasion, a member of an app review team contacted Twitter, saying with consternation that he had searched for “#boobs” in the Twitter app and was presented with … exactly what you’d expect. Another time, on the eve of a major feature release, a reviewer sent screenshots of several days-old tweets containing an English-language racial slur, asking Twitter representatives whether they should be permitted to appear on the service.

Reviewers hint that app approval could be delayed or perhaps even withheld entirely if issues are not resolved to their satisfaction — although the standards for resolution are often inferred. Even as they appear to be driven largely by manual checks and anecdotes, these review procedures have the power to derail company road maps and trigger all-hands-on-deck crises for weeks or months at a time.

Whose values are these companies defending when they enforce their policies? While the wide array of often conflicting global laws no doubt play a part, the most direct explanation is that platform policies represent the preferences of a small group of predominantly American tech executives. Steve Jobs didn’t believe porn should be allowed in the App Store, and so it isn’t allowed. Stripped bare, there’s a dismaying lack of legitimacy to the decisions here.

It’s this very lack of legitimacy that Mr. Musk, correctly, points to when he calls for greater free speech, and for the establishment of a “content moderation council” to guide the company’s policies — an idea Google and Apple would be right to borrow for the governance of their app stores. But even as he criticizes the capriciousness of platform policies, he perpetuates this same lack of legitimacy through his impulsive changes and tweet-length pronouncements about Twitter’s rules. In appointing himself “Chief Twit,” Mr. Musk has made clear that at the end of the day, he’ll be the one calling the shots.

It was for this reason that I ultimately chose to leave the company: A Twitter whose policies are defined by unilateral edict has little need for a trust and safety function dedicated to its principled development.

So where will Twitter go from here? Some of the company’s decisions in the weeks and months to come, like the near-certainty of allowing Donald Trump’s account back on the service, will have an immediate, perceptible impact. But to truly understand the shape of Twitter going forward, I’d encourage looking not just at the choices the company makes but at how Mr. Musk makes them. Should it materialize, will the moderation council represent more than just the loudest, predominantly American voices complaining about censorship — including, critically, the approximately 80 percent of Twitter users who reside outside of the United States? Will the company continue to invest in features like Community Notes, which bring Twitter users into the work of platform governance? Will Mr. Musk’s tweets announcing policy changes become less frequent and abrupt?

Longer term, the moderating influences of advertisers, regulators and — most critically of all — app stores may be welcome for those of us hoping to avoid an escalation in the volume of dangerous speech online. Twitter will have to balance its new owner’s goals against the practical realities of life on Apple and Google’s internet — no easy task for the employees who have chosen to remain. And as I departed the company, the calls from the app review teams had already begun.

One team known as Twitter Command Center, a 20-person organization crucial to preventing outages and technology failures during high-traffic events, had multiple people from around the world resign, two former employees said. The “core services” team, which handles computing architecture, was cut to four people from more than 100. Other teams that deal with how media appears in tweets or how profiles show follower counts were down to zero people.
(NYT)

Good thing Musk can simply hire Indian engineers for $1 an hour next week to immediately take over. I presume all of this is pretty self-explanatory. Not sure why he even kept four people of the core services team, that seems a bit wasteful.

@Uncle
You were right, I was totally looking at this the wrong way. The ideal size of each team is of course zero. Now that is smart business and was certainly the plan all along! Think of all the money that can be saved this way, the acquisition will basically pay for itself by the end of the month.

Im not a tech person, so I really have no concept as to how many engineers are needed to keep a website running.

For comparison, how many software engineers work full time at The Bore? How many were added to handle new registrations when that was opened up? How big is our health and safety team?

Occam read the room, man.  If you want to contribute maybe try a platitude like: Elon has a history of high expectations and exploiting workers.  It's pretty  :brain for Twitter employees to think that they wouldn't be treated just the same as someone working at Tesla and Space-X, despite never agreeing to work for those companies.  This really just shows how entitled and unprofessional these people are for publicly complaining about being expected to work harder and cover for all the people who just got fired.  Also, as a twitter user myself, I know for certain that they could have been working harder in any case.  Like imagine publicly advocating for fair working conditions and not expect any consequences.  The worst thing in all this is the tweets from SJWs exaggerating the situation, not the situation visa workers who can't leave now face.
My whole take on the situation is that at first I really didn't like this Musk guy, but then I saw a tweet where some loony compared his take over to apartheid, and now I just don't know what to think.  Like clearly all sides are awful, but it's kind of nice when one of the most powerful people in the world can give a little push back, you know?  Anyways, I think the rational position here is just to say that the world is as it is and anyone who expects anything different is nuts.
Oh, I just ventured into the Culture War thread and saw 100 more loony tweets shared by the best people.  Kinda low key rooting for Musk now.  It's funny how I'm generally anti-establishment and for workers but, those Twitter people man.  I know just the kind of people they are and I don't like them.

I'm a pretty smart guy and to have my opinion changed so easily by the tweets from a bunch of terminally online losses really says something about them.

Honestly this further demonstrates Twitter's technical incompetency. Somehow bewbs and penor are harder to find on YouTube and Google SafeSearch... :idont And those two don't even have hashtags explicitly telling the algorithm the content of the post... (I mean YouTube does have hashtags for uploads, but someone uploading porn doesn't tag it "#porn" like someone on Twitter would.)

I don't see it as technical incompetency necessarily as much as different priorities. Google's goal is to scan everything in existence and identify it. Twitter's goal is... uh... well, let me get back to you on that if the new owner ever figures one out and sticks to it longer than a few hours.

james, what's your Twitter account? I am going to report every single tweet as "negative" including anything you retweet. Especially if it's Splatoon art.

Elon Musk has put the engineers and developers back in charge again.
That's why all the managers he fired hate him.

Trump at 10 million votes, he dropped to 52 but has increased to 52.5 again.

Tech has been inflitrated by fake nerds for way too long.
I remember when we had to WFH during COVID and one of our designers didn't even have a decent PC, headset or monitor at home.

Even my brother who is in game development had to arrange GPU's and PC's for his level designers.
It's like being a professional race driver but not owning a car.

This had me look up the evidence that Trump incited the riot on Twitter and it seems... quite flimsy? https://www.theverge.com/2022/7/12/23205723/donald-trump-twitter-tweets-january-6th-us-capitol-rally-riot-stop-the-steal
Quote
The employee, whose identity remains anonymous, specifically pointed to a December 19th tweet from Trump, which asked his supporters to join him in “protest” of the 2020 election results. “Be there. Will be wild,” the tweet said. According to the anonymous employee, that message was seen by many within Twitter as directly responsible for the violence that followed, which left five dead and has resulted in more than 700 arrests.

Basically he announced the rally on Twitter and then people came. Seems like something he would have been able to do through a ton of other avenues as well? He's been successfully organizing rallies after his Twitter ban too. Twitter definitely played a big role in his rise during the presidential campaign but I think it's also fair to say that the cat is already out of the bag, whether he has an account or not

When people say he used Twitter to do this no one means that it was because he organized the thing directly in a single tweet, but the months of unhinged election misinformation he constantly posted between losing the election and the Capital attack where he purposefully worked people into a frenzy.  You're looking at a drop of water while standing in an ocean and going 'is this water?'

Yes, he has other options for doing bad things, therefore the reach of those options doesn't matter is a silly argument.   Literally, you can see that banning him from Twitter worked just by looking at Nintex posts here.  Whereas he would repost every dumbass thing Trump said 11 times a day before the ban, after he had to post second hand-tweets from Jared Kushner or some shit that went "Just spoke to the president, ..." or post the stupid Trump press releases that no one looked at but Nintex.  If the cat is out of the bag you don't just let it wander the house, you put it back in the bag and drown it.

Also, yes AOC is a known exaggerater, so let's give uncharitable readings to everything she says just to further show what an exaggerater she is.  What a fun game to do.  It's not like repeatedly doing this day in day out is the reason why Nintex has the reasoning skills of a wombat.
