I heard it was like a layout from the 90's or something. I didn't even know forums existed back then.

The dude had a bit of courage left in him, clearly not the most confident dude in the world, but happened to manage to muster enough of it to try something crazy. Let him fall on his face? Sure, but you don't need to push him even harder.

I think it'd be a lot easier to explain when they already saw her reject his proposal on television or heard about (it's hard to imagine that this wouldn't become a topic of conversation among friends and family members).
