One of the best things about this game is that the main character is a 'nice' guy. He's not a smug smart ass, but pretty polite and humble. I'm sick of smartasses in games.

What Tieno said, really.

This is a pretty down to earth character, he has a past but he doesn't seem chained to it every second he speaks. Which means that he gets to have some mistery about him, but at the same time it's not played up until you are sick of it. At the beginning you will have a couple of missions with this other woman, when you learn a couple of stuff about the game, and it's really surprising to see how casual, normal, and nice John Marston is.

It's a pretty big departure from other games.

I've gotten to the point where my concerns over graphics have to do with how it serves the overall game and not whether it is pushing some previous barrier.

The people who fixate on graphics on a minute level I've noticed often can't tell their ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to game quality and generally have some weird platform agenda going. GAF is full of them. Fortunately there are just a couple over here I could mention but won't...

News is spreading that the PS3 version runs at a lower res than the 360 one (just like GTA4) and GAF is in meltdown mode.

Quote
Seriously, you guys have gone off the the deep end with how great this game looks, frothing like you are 10 years old. Does it look great (on the 360 and of course gimped from full on nirvana like always) sure it does. Is it so much better than anything else (on the PS3) not so much. I am sure it is a pretty damn good game but when it's subHD with no AA on the beast that is the PS3 NO ******* THANKS. I'll wait for the fall and christman and the 1st party to blow me away. God I love the Old West and GOD I hate Microsoft.

360 engines have ruined this Gen for multiplats. I can only hope for a PC version and some money to buy a PC in the next year or so (here I come M$). No way I'm playing a 540p game or even 640p of this caliber without AA on my 42" local dimmer. It will undoubtably look like crap. I can barely stand Ratchet and Clank and that is like 640p or something, and the cartoon visuals save it as does 60fps. Whatever. Rockstar is a big big BIG grisly senile boner imo and they are using an engine that is outdated and almost not compatible with the Cell's prowess.

 :rofl

:lol @ Ratchet's faulty 360 engine

man, i have always found it weird and more than a little creepy how people will obsess over things like resolution and minute differences in graphical effects

maybe it's because i came of age at a time when a fucking single-color square represented your "man" onscreen in a video game, but i hardly ever notice stuff like that, and even in a mediocre game like aliens vs. predator i am still tickled (that is countryspeak for "delighted") by effects like the alien acid spraying across the screen

the only thing that ever jumps out at or bothers me is when the frame rate stutters and chugs in a racing game or during heavy action moments in a shooter, and most of the time i can even live with that unless it really affects reaction time

i guess what i am trying to say is that i am not thinking about making a bullet point list when i sit down to play a game
I go back and play PS2/OG Xbox stuff sometimes, and honestly the graphic difference bothers me for about 5 minutes until I'm actually playing the game. What does get me, surprisingly, are the lack of other current-gen features such as XBL friend presence, support for custom soundtracks if I'm sick of the game's music, but mainly it feels weird after dealing with the Dashboard/XMB to have a console "just start." There's the game, it's local, and that's about it. But the graphics are not really anything which lingers in my head as a nag.

The people who fixate on graphics on a minute level I've noticed often can't tell their ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to game quality and generally have some weird platform agenda going. GAF is full of them. Fortunately there are just a couple over here I could mention but won't...
The people who have fixated on resolution would likely tell you that higher resolution is CRITICAL to whether or not they can tell a difference between their ass and a hole in the ground.

I just now pre-ordered through Play-Asia.com; hope they actually get this soon, rather than dicking around with it like they did with Rock Band 2.

I'm only two hours in (can't play games for longer than two hours non-stop), and it has been amazing so far.
WTF at the graphics? Best looking sandbox world ever. Especially during nighttime. The flora and fauna create a great atmosphere during nighttime.
I already had some very lol-worthy moments in the game. I've abused my horse so many times without wanting it to. Fell off a cliff a few times, I survived, the horse didn't. Good thing I could loot it.

My only real concerns with the graphics in this game was whether or not the shadows had that same dithering look as the 360 version of GTA4.  I know it sounds like your typical GAF-tard graphic whore or dark10x type stuff but for whatever reason, I found it really distracting in GTA4.  I mean REALLY distracting.  I'm just glad that shit's not in either version this time around.

Went to Gamestop today and traded FF13 and Splinter Cell Conviction in for RDR.  Won't be missing either of those two anytime soon.  Tuesday can't get here soon enough.

The New York Times weighs in with a review -

Quote
In the more than 1,100 articles I have written for this newspaper since 1996, I have never before called anything a tour de force. Yet there is no more succinct and appropriate way to describe Red Dead Redemption. Rockstar rides again.

Sounds like a 6.8 to me.

Get off this bullshit already.

Edit: Oh so this is about the PS3 version?  I don't really care if it's a 20% decrease in pixels or whatever as long as it's not QAA or TAA which looks kind of meh.

No, we weren't.

A chicken not being crispy does not mean the chicken is bad. You can be disappointed in the lack of crispiness and still enjoy the chicken.

RDR not being in HD does not mean RDR is bad. You can be disappointed in the lack of HD and still enjoy the game.

some distant DNA echo just rumbled in my bones.

Well, it was in a mission where I got my lasso. But since you can stumble upon packs of wild horses I assume you can do it during freeroam too and get a price for them. Similar to skinning animals. Before I've tried shooting at horses but either I'm not aiming well or my rifle is too weak. Have killed lots of other animals. Haven't killed any big game yet, saw a deer once and shot at it but missed and he started running very frantically making me miss subsequent shots.

Unfortunately, the mission structure is 1:1 = GTAIV. Which means, go to one side of the map then go to the other side of the map, then again, again again.

Game is losing its mojo.

Unfortunately, the mission structure is 1:1 = GTAIV. Which means, go to one side of the map then go to the other side of the map, then again, again again.
:shh

Does the world feel as empty as GTAIV did when you're not actively doing missions/seeking out doing missions?

Well, by nature the world is more empty than GTA IV. But i think that on the other hand, the game gives you pretty great amount of content that can just happen on the fly, people asking for your help and shit, getting chased by panthers. There's a nice thing going on with the world A.I.

GTA4 let you warp with cabs to fix this. What does RDR have?

Wild West cabs in each town, and a travel mechanic when you set a camp. The problem is with the whole theory though, Rockstar tries to force your exploration of the game world, when it should be gradual and more natural.

Just feel like they should've started from a point and expanded instead of quickly becoming here and there and over there, and holy shit there.
