i swear i honestly do not understand this whole "lol dumbass devs" thing people say when a game company announces that they're restarting development to release a better game. like would it be better to you if they went ahead and charged $60 for some brand-destroying poo or are you just mad that you can't have your videogame right now
This one is funny just because of how much of a clusterfuck the entire thing is. The Star Wars 1313 team was doing Metroid after they got picked up by Bandai Namco. Then it got cancelled.
Retro had fuck all to do (didn't finish anything in the past 6 years). So they pitched a Metroid prototype after being asked to look into porting Metroid Prime Trilogy to Switch to promote MP4.
Nintendo liked the Metroid prototype better than what Bandai Namco is developing. They were trying out a new sort of Ubi-like multi-studio development project but some parts of the game were lagging behind compared to others.
People who've worked on it say it was in pretty good shape though and the cancellation came sort of as a surprise.
Nintendo tasked Retro with building a new Metroid game because they liked the prototype. However in the meantime key staff at Retro have left the company because what they were working on prior to Metroid got cancelled and they figure dicking around doing nothing for 6 years and helping out with LABO is enough and not advancing their careers. At this point they again need to form a new team at Retro Studios before production on this game can start from scratch because they hardly have the staff to produce a first-person Metroid game at scale. This whole thing is a mess.
