I am IM-PRESSED.  Yessir, yessir.  As I've only just started, I know I'll have to get further in to see the game's negative points, but I am completely loving this game thus far.  I always enjoy Bioware's speech sections in their RPGs; this is one of the few games I can think of where I actually like stopping and talking to characters, listening to everything that they have to say.  And this, combined with the better-than-expected combat, just makes for a great all-around package.  I love how smooth the transition is into combat; I picked the soldier class for my character, and shooting, getting cover, "roadie run." grenade chucking, and more are all as they would be in a FPS.  The combat is much smoother and far better implementing than the system that was used in Jade Empire.  As someone who generally finds RPGs to be mind-numbingly boring, I am really enjoying Mass Effect.

the sandworms that you meet when driving with the space tank are very easy to beat; just stay still, and then the worm's AI will begin to target you, let it fire his thing, and then as soon as it's fired drive a bit away and immediately shoot at it with your machine gun... repeat continuously until it's killed

Sheeeeeit, this game is fuck awesome.  Best thing Bioware has done since BG2, easy.  AMAZING presentation.

It really is. This game feels like the future of western rpgs to me. Amazingly enough, even though it's an action rpg, it still plays like a turn based rpg somehow.

Tips:

1. Biotic users are a must. Either you, or someone else, you NEED a biotic user in your party; they make a world of difference because they help stop enemies shooting at you and give you room to breath. Throw/Lift/Singularity are extremely important!

2. Master Unity and your other healing stats. You will get better skills, and while it may make the game slightly easier, you will get less annoyed. Healing time takes a while in this game, and items that increase healing recharges are sparse early on. Mastering these skills early on can save you time.

3. Use the environment to your advantage: set a trap by forcing enemies to chase you after planting a mine, or leading them into a narrow hallway where you can use your Biotic to cast Lift, making them all hover in the air so you can pick them off.

if you don't use everything in your disposal in Mass Effect you will be owned, especially if you aren't a Soldier class. At the beginning of the game you forget you even have biotics because you start to think of it as a shooter, but nope. It's still an rpg; you need to buff your attacks, debuff enemies, use magic to survive.

I like how even though it's an RPG, the "pacing" of the shooting feels more realistic than most games out there.

The voice acting in this mostly blows me away, too.  Some of the alien voices don't sound how you think they would, but around the board the VA is pretty great, even for the main character (again, there are some flubbed lines, but given that there's so much dialogue, it's not that bad).  And ZOMG Seth Green!

The characters in the game are extremely realistic compared to past Bioware games. They make hilarious quips (Joker saying he would have trouble taking a piss), but it's not nearly as cartoony as past games. No "Boo" in this game!

And I love the dialogue system. Someone at SA posted this but I think it reflects my thoughts perfectly:

Thought: "Oh fuck that, bitch"
Option: "Fuck off"
Dialog: "You need to show some respect soldier. Consider fucking yourself when we get back to the ship."

I frequently find myself saying "Yeah, take that! " after Shepard speaks.

Let's talk about the choices we've made in the game so far:

I wandered into C-Sec at the Citadel and encountered a news reporter. I was answering her questions until the last question where she asks if I'm on Saren's trail. I didn't want to confirm or deny this because I felt it was secret info, and that my higher ups would be pissed if I continued so I told her that was the end of the interview. Later on, I get back on the ship and the captain of Alliance Fleet 5 is like,"I saw your interview. You embarrassed the people back home for not answering that question. Now they think you feel you're a step above humans because you're a Spectre now." And then even further into the game, I got into a elevator in the Citadel and they commented on my interview and how it looks like I don't care about humanity anymore. It's like they misconstrued what I wanted to do.

I don't even get this feeling when I play rpgs, but I really wish I could go back and finish the rest of that interview. Now humans hate me!

Yeah, I get the impression that if I had played the dialogue differently, there were a few "little" changes to the plot that could hve occurred, particularly in relation to the order of things I did shit at the citadel during the first mission.

Did that C-Sec thing happen at the beginning of the game, or afterwards?

Well, I guess you consider this still the "beginning" of the game. It was after I beat the first main story world. You should head to Citadel after every time you beat any world, story or other wise, you'll most likely encounter tons and tons of new quests.

The freaky fan quest doesn't continue until you've beaten a world for instance. I'm still doing that quest and I'm on the 2nd story world (which is fucking amazing I might add).

The fan is a fucking weirdo. He asks to take my picture because "his wife will love it" :lol

The next time I encounter the reporter, I am doing this!

Viz:

Luna (the moon). you'll eventually get a call for a quest there, which will unlock that part of the galaxy. You have to have invested 6 points into your Spectre class to unlock it I think. After completing the mission, you get a choice of 2 (at least for me) classes you can pick which are based off of your default class (in my case, it was Engineer). I chose Medic.

I don't really understand what's so bad about it. If you turn partner AI to use all powers I find it to be dynamic and fun. The only thing I don't really get is why the cover system isn't a snap-to-button system as opposed to a "lean against" system.

I'm reading in the GAF thread and everyone is jacking it about the story, and nothing but. This story had better be REALLY good, cause these side-quests (i can't help it! EXP!) are really distracting from what is apparently the best part about the game (according to BioWare.com poll).

beat the game yesterday (level 39ish)

the story is pretty awesome and I personally cant wait for the sequel

last boss was a bitch and a half, be sure to have polonium rounds, or something that avoids shields when you hit otherwise prepare for the longest battle ever

anyway here is my breakdown:

I was a female vanguard who specialize in shotguns and pistols, and have some handy biotics (barrier, lift, throw) as well. I love this class and I think its the best starting class.

Shotguns> all else. An upgraded gun can kill a guy 20 feet away with one shot and my upgraded gun shoots 5 rounds before overheating.

anyway more in depth planet spolerish details:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
eden prime is a great start, I loved the trains section and disarming the bombs was tense

I went to noveria first, awesome place, very cool enemies. boss was kind of hard but I have a feeling I was underleveled a bit

Decided on feros second and it was even better imo, the scale is amazing, easily the most beautiful planet. That plant monster was great, did all the side quests on this planet and racked up the cash. Didn't even kill one person (I suggest you wack them with your gun as 5 grenades wont cut it for 16 )

Virmire I believe is the third main story related planet and is where shit hits the fan. I highly suggest having your charm maxed out before you get here as I believe you can avoid a certain confrontation with it. I did not and was sad to see the results. You will see what I mean.

The next place is one you should for sure not go to until you are done with side quest stuff, once you land there is no turning back.
I wont mention the name of it but you should learn it after completing the other main story planets. The Story begins to unravel its mysteries here and the game is coming to an end. This isnt the last place but its close.

Overall I liked the ending but I also amused at how much your choices affect the endgame. You can make a choice where certain individuals live or die and this changes the ending a bit. Not too much but im curious to see what mass effect 2 will have as the true ending so to speak when continuing the story.

[close]

anyway Im replaying for the side quest stuff on hardcore (which isnt too much harder thus far) and as a male. I have to say I prefer the female voice. Im also playing as an infiltrator this time and I dont like the sniper rifle much yet, It needs upgrades for stability imo

Im sure this is possible but it sucks atm. Most of the side quest stuff feels tacked on and minimalistic so far. I hope I find a planet rivaling the epic win of feros/noveria only completely optional

Well, I like it a lot because when i got to noveria, there was a japanese chick that was had shit up her pants and was giving me a lot of crap. After talking to her, I talked to Kaiden and he said,"A little bit nippy." and I couldn't stop laughing.

Noveria has the hardest boss fight so far though, so I suggest not going there until you've done Theros and Feros, (also, in that order).

Mass Effect's repetitiveness is no different than Assassin's Creed. I like the sidequests.

i don't mind the sidequests either.  beats the hell out of the fetch quests, at least there's story involved for the most part.  combat was a little weird in the beginning, but now that i understand the nuances, it's actually pretty tactical.  make sure you have both close and long range support, and use throw when an enemy gets too close.  radar is your best friend (unless jammed).  other than that, i don't see what's really difficult about it.  upgrades are fucking awesome too.  i love how you can use different rounds for your weapons, they make a world of a difference.

demi:  i'm assuming you beat the father kyle quest, but if not, go to the circular building to the right of the first one you entered.

I like that you don't ever run out of ammo.  I've played countless number of games where they have special ammo types or weapons but I'm always way too cautious about using them 'cause I can't help but think that I may need them somewhere else.  Here I can switch it up and not have to worry at all.

I just ran into the inventory limit thing.  Really kind of a pain in the ass.  I've also been dealing more with the shops and I've just started to realize how cumbersome and idiotic the menu design really is.  Why the hell are all the items lumped together when I'm shopping?  Why can't I break up the order by classification instead of price?  Why the hell isn't the B button being used as the "back" button?  It's like they were just being different for the sake of being different.  I'd honestly like to see some sort of patch to fix some of this shit.
