Planning 2 videos, 5 or so mins each. One for XMB features and one for Trophies. None of the previous videos has been a short as 90 seconds, just as long as it takes to show off the features and not make you sit through a lot of fluff.

360 gets fanfare whenever they release their updates.  People from 1up/IGN/Gamespot/Gametrailers (one of them) get paid to go on video and talk about the new dashboard updates for like 20 minutes.  That blows my mind.

And yeah, it is good to finally get these features that should have been there day 1.  It is annoying to see the pop up saying there is a new message, then you have to either quit out of the game or remember to check it whenever you are done playing.  That is annoying.  Plus there is also talk about custom sound tracks and all that stuff as well as the whole trophies thing.  Basically, this update is attempting to match up with some of the features that separate it from the 360.  There was even that bump to 100 people on your friends list just recently.

Did you actually buy a launch 360? It's hardly an excuse for Sony taking fucking forever to get this shit done, but the 360 has been improving since launch.

I guess it's telling though that the PS3 launched with more robust media playback functionality, whereas the 360 got the community deal right from the start. This generation

We were excited about an update, not a fucking video of said update. Oh and remember, the xbox 360 doesn't get updates every other week or so just to play catch-up with the competition.

I meant to look at the trolling in that dashboard update thread. There was none. Just people happy about the added features which is what you would think might happen when the PS3 gets an update.

Yes I did. And as you said 360 has been improving on the basic functionality it provides out of the box - ie in game messaging and friends lists among other things. They added the other stuff later because it was less important (sup messenger)

With this functionality I will have a reason to turn to my PS3 for gaming, when that becomes applicable.

I want to see if they actually come through all the way or if the implementation will be half assed, hence video.

Pretty much catching up with the 360 for most of the features:

-Custom soundtracks, although it seems you manually have to turn off music in the game unlike the 360 which does it automatically.  Game sound still play

-Pretty much all features from the normal XMB can be used in game.  You can also jump from one game to another through in game XMB without needing to drop out to the main XMB.

-Google search icon

-Clock with date.

Trophies are gonna be in the next video.  No release date yet for the actual release of it.

What about friend invites?  There was no mention of invites at all.  Let's say I'm playing Battlefield and I see someone who just turned on their PS3 and is in the XMB, can I invite them to my game?  What if they're playing some other game (cross-game invites)?

And what about voice chat?  Being able to have a private chat with someone who's playing another game or whatever.

I don't think anything has been said about friend invites when in games, so don't count on it.

As for chats between games, some pictures allude to this, but don't get your hopes up.

It isn't like it was planned for this update.  It was being planned and shown for Home, and we already know that most of the features in Home are going to also have a 2D/UI way of doing it.  So expect it later, just not sooner.
