It's certainly brainless, but I thought it was entertaining enough.  I tend to be more accepting of Seth Rogan's stock manic-depressive douchebag performances than most people, I think, so even that element I found enjoyable, although I will concede that the last half-hour or so is lacking in both coherent writing and action.  I got the impression that they were trying to give the final act a last hurrah of campiness and it doesn't read quite right.

Super 8

This is a movie that you could really pick apart if you wanted to, the flaws are there. But, you know what? I don't want to. Not at all. Enjoyed it on every level as I bowed at the altar of Spielberg and had pure nostalgia pumped into my veins. Watching that movie...man, it was like the later 70's never ended. Also, it's better than a million Transformers, so eat it, Michael Bay.

Watched The Hit from Stephen Frears w/ John Hurt, Tim Roth and Terence Stamp last night and loved it.  Hurt and Roth (in his first role) play hitmen - seasoned professional and apprentice, respectively - assigned to capture a gangland snitch, Stamp, hiding-out in Spanish countryside and bring him back to his former boss to be executed.  Loved the writing, particularly; it's unconventional in that the focus of the film is on events that take place during the return trip itself.  Great performances all around, too.

It's streaming on Netflix - highly recommended.

True Romance

First time I saw this, you can def see Tarantino wrote it but didnt have all the freedom to do what he wanted as he didn't direct.

It's pretty much how you would expect a cross between the director of Top Gun and Tarantino would look and feel, all the dialogue is pretty much there but it feels much more like a early nineties/late eighties movie then Pulp Fiction which came out only one year later. Like a generational leap.

Yeah when I saw the cast come by I was really impressed. I liked the movie, especially for what it is, standing on the threshold of the Tarantino age and a different way of filmmaking. True Romance still has that early 90's innocence that has been lost.

Quote
As a screenwriter on Conan The Barbarian, I get asked this question a lot.

The world of Hyboria, as Robert E. Howard described it, is fleshy and brutal. Bloody beheadings and bare-chested slave girls abound. However, while the movie is unflinching in its depiction of barbarism, slavery and warfare, the violence and nudity emerge from the fabric of the story. It isn't gratuitous.

Robert E. Howard's stories, although violent and perverse for their time, were not intrusively graphic either. So this is ultimately a movie about the character Conan, a character that will hopefully launch a healthy franchise of movies with stories and characters that celebrate Howard's work. Yes, you'll see blood and boobs, but this isn't a Cinemax movie; it's epic action/fantasy.

And yes, it's rated R.

WHITEOUT
Mediocre. I wish I'd watched it on blu-ray because it's clearly got a lot of beautiful scenery. The director seemed to be going for an ALIEN meets Friday the 13th meets generic mystery -- ON ICE. Tom Skerritt (adding to the original Alien feel) was good, Kate Beckinsale was trying too hard. The flashback sequences were predictable and laughably melodramatic. The payoff was pretty good, but many things in review just don't make a lot of sense. B-

GANTZ live action
The dub was weak. I'll see the sequel, PERFECT ANSWER, in Japanese while it's on the big screen if I can squeeze it in. The translation of the characters to live action was handled surprisingly well, excepting Tae Kojima. The guy playing Nishi was perfect -- just spot-on. The two male leads, it was strange. The guy playing Kei is one of those "idoru tarento" that they push into as many jobs as possible. Right now they are convinced he can act. The guy playing Katoh actually CAN act though, and the disparity is clear. B+

I actually took the DVD out of the machine and threw it out, never done that before or since :yuck
:rofl

I didn't like it on my first viewing in the theaters, but later on VHS I came to love it. It's one of those things I'm surprised has never been turned into a game. Hm...

yeah the action was really well shot and exciting. Loved the setting as well. Some beautiful desert locations..

I liked it how the plot wasn't too heavy. It was mainly about the three main guys on the poster and the different things that drove them. I like character driven storylines like that.

I never really figured out what was going on with the bounty hunter though (guy on the left). They explained the other guys motivations pretty well but I could never really figure out what the bounty hunter was trying to achieve during the film.

It's pretty much Anime: The Movie. It's got lolis, fan service, parental issues, Freudian imagery, so-bad-they're-good pop songs, the grimdark twist about half-way through, loads of WTF, leading up to an inexplicable finale.

The Rite
wtf.  How the hell was this ever greenlit?  It's like someone decided to take the exorcism movie and turn the volume up to 11.  It's not about a Priest having a faith crisis, the dude is straight up Atheist.  No clever writing to be found.  It's like having a debate with one of the atheist tards on GAF.  Obnoxious.  There's not just one possessed person.  Multiple!  Not just one exorcist, hundreds!  The Vatican has a class that's training exorcists.  It's like X(orcist)-Men.  Hell, the head Priest that's training them is called Xavier!!  Not just one demon. Nooooo.  They travel in packs!  Anthony Hopkins is officially a C-List actor now if he wasn't before.  This shit is so fucking terrible I wonder how he got talked into it.  The dude can't be that broke.  This is really one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time.  Everything about it is so dry and bland.  It really feels like a bunch of executives were brainstorming and came to the conclusion that they needed a movie that was like the Exorcist but times ten!!!

Love and Other Drugs
Soooo, Jake Gyllenhaal(sp?) is a smooth talking sex maniac who is extremely intelligent and could sell ice to an eskimo.  He's a funny guy.  The parts with him are funny.  He's a Pfizer drug rep trying to get doctors to prescribe drugs (specifically Viagra and Prozac) in this movie.  Lulz do ensue.  Then one day when he's shadowing a doctor, he meets Maggie (Anne Hathaway).  Well the movie is downhill.  Chick is insane and in about 10 minutes it turns into a serious movie.  She has Parkinson's disease and is scared of making someone take care of her and we get to see these issues in all their glory.  Including Jake going to a support group meeting.  She runs out of meds one weekend and turns into a blubbering shaking alcoholic.  She's insane, he's stupid and all of a sudden it's a drama, not a comedy.  What the fuck.

so Takashi Miike's 13 Assassins is going round the country, and its pretty great.  But its great in ways that you might not expect from a Miike flick.  Its got its occasional gonzo elements, but for the most part the film plays it straight as a conventional men-on-a-mission movie.  And that's okay, in fact, its pretty damn good.

There's a larger subtext about the morality of being a samurai, having to swear your life to a perhaps unworthy cause or even abetting evil.  But mostly the movie is about assembling a team to fight a really bad guy and his minions, and the eventual last third of the film makes the wait until the clashing of blades especially worthwhile.  Its just one of the best action movie set pieces you'll see this year.

Huh. I saw half of a feature on it on a TV show that runs down upcoming movies (King's Brunch), then went to my local cinema page, was surprised total to not see it there, then went to the imdb page and saw September. Must have missed the year!

I guess they were only covering it 'cause of the US release or something. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense but that's all I can think of.

The Green Hornet was alright but the subplot of Hornet & Kato being mad at each other for a quarter of the movie was awful and I dunno why they wrote the plot that way at all.  Otherwise it was entertaining and the bad guy was really really good.  Had some decent comedy too.
