no doubting Bruce Lee's greatness but in terms of on-screen enjoyment provided, personally

1. Jackie Chan
2. Jet Li
3. Bruce Lee

completely agreed. jackie knocks the shit out of bruce in terms of what's available but that's not fair considering bruce is dead but still.

Bruce Lee died just as his career was getting started, Jackie Chan made dozens of movies throughout his prime [and still is]. It's not really a fair comparison.

How I ended This Summer is a beautiful, quiet and slowly paced, yet quite tense Russian film. The scenery adds its own tension by being both seductive in beauty but so obviously desolate and cruel. There's a lot of shots where I think "fuck I want a poster of that".

OTOH I did see a Russian dude's dirty hairy ass. And then he swipped a skinny dude in a sauna with a branch of leaves.

I know! And it's such a shame! :( But it's also why I don't understand people put Bruce above Jackie. :(

watched something called Sniper: Reloaded. It had Billy Zane in it which was pretty cool. Movie was fucked though. Really weird. There were some pretty sweet guns in it.

I love Jackie, dude just oozes charisma, but Bruce wins on that no one can really match up with him in skill and technique, hell in physical strength and speed. There's a reason Bruce Lee rules the martial arts field and that is he was the pinnacle, Jackie is more of a superstar.

Jet Li I wouldn't put there with either Jackie or Bruce, he's awesome but not quite there yet.

well bruce lee may have been the best fighter, but I enjoy martial arts movies for the technical showmanship (emphasis on showmanship). Films where the choreography and acrobatics of fights are as important as the fighters themselves. I think Jackie Chan is a better choreographer than Bruce Lee that's why I rate him higher, not because he's a better fighter irl, that's irrelevant to me.

Also, perhaps more importantly, Jackie Chan and Jet Li had the help of people like Lau Kar-leung, Sammo Hung and Yuen Woo-ping for some of their best work like OUATIC and Drunken Master II. So it's not really the fighters themselves that make 'em for me, but more so the people behind their successes.

I would also put Donnie Yen up there with Jet Li and Jackie Chan now, he came into his own with the Ip Man movies but he was in OUATIC2 and Iron Monkey before that, so he deserves to be up there.

This sorta stuff impresses me more than anything in Enter the Dragon

the hangover is the most overrated comedy film ever.

I disagree.  That title could probably go to Old School, Wedding Crashers, or Anchorman instead.

The Hangover is very overrated.  I'm tired of the manchild comedy subgenre.  That said, a friend paid for a ticket for me to go to Hangover 2.  I could see it being a movie that while hilarious in theaters (with about 100 people laughing their asses off), it could be a total flop outside of that.  It is just a cash in but given how much money it raked in, it's inevitable.  We'll probably see a Hangover 3 in 2013.  Will probably be set in Amsterdam, Rio de Janeiro, or Ibiza or some other place.

How is the Hangover a manchild comedy?

Are you serious?

Anyway, watched Crank 2 last night. Easily the most ridiculous shit I have ever seen, jesus christ

The desert scene in the hangover with the asian dude is easily the most overrated scene in the last 10-20 years of comedies.  The character and dialogue is cringe worthy and not funny.  I like the hangover and the first time seeing it, it was indeed hilarious.  But that scene is just so fucking bad.  And seeing the deleted scenes from there made it even worse.  Also, Ed Helm or whoever plays Andy in the Office (can't be bothered to look up his name) is so goddamn annoying.

Went and saw Bridesmaids tonight.  I liked it.  I don't think it's up there with the best Apatow produced comedies, but it's one of the good ones.  Had a lot of good lines, but definitely a super super chick flick and would not recommend to any guys until video.  Also the movie is FREAKING LONG.  Almost 2:30 hours; did not expect that; definitely felt the length.

I watched this last night and thought it was pretty awesome.  While I expected a bit more flair from a Gondry flick, it does have some very cool and unique actions scenes and a few incredibly assembled montages.

My favorite thing about it, though, is that through the entire flick I thought Kato was the Asian guy from Harold & Kumar doing a heavy Chinese accent for some strange reason.

Resident Evil: Afterlife

shit - i enjoyed this was more than I expected I would. some context: I think the first is pretty good, the second is really dumb but fun, and the third is terrible.
this one was just the right mix of self aware dumbness and silly action. I loved that the entire "Alice army" concept from the end of the 3rd is completely swept under the rug in the very first scene and so is Alice being a superhuman as well.

Wesker was hilarious and amazing

the Executioner scene was badass

Better than Resident Evil 5 (the game)

thumbs up def recommend watching on netflix right now

I must have gotten some other movie called The Green Hornet because what I watched was fucking horrible.  So bad I couldn't even finish it.  Flat direction for anything that wasn't an (admittedly good) action scene, horrible horrible horrible dialog for horrible characters in a godawful story.

Ong Bak 2

Yikes. This is not good at all. They try to cram way too much story and exposition into the first hour and a half, which means only one or two fights worth mentioning, and then try to fix the lack of action scenes by having the last 20 minutes be one extended brawl. Doesn't help that Tony Jaa doesn't have anywhere close to the personality to carry an exposition heavy movie by himself, which he largely has to do, but it's brought down even further by plot threads that don't seem to go anywhere and an ending that's just so bad and unfulfilling. A huge step back from Ong-Back 1 and even The Protector.

my favourite thing about the Green Hornet was the fact that some of the more violent action was portrayed in a way to make it slapstick. For instance when 2 guys got crushed buy a rolling cement truck tank, it was a lot funnier than it should've been.

Just got back from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Very pretty. A visual treat throughout. But what an insane mess, otherwise. Good grief. There is nothing in the movie which made any sense at all. Depp is clearly tired of the character, but does alright. Rush is good as well. Actually, the acting was good all around. TOO BAD NO ONE DID A CONTINUITY CHECK ON THE SCRIPT.

Red White & Blue

This is a pretty somber revenge thriller. There's a pretty lengthy slow burn first and second act and it bookended by some pretty rough stuff. I was reminded of a movie i watched a while back called Dead Man's Shoes. The similarities are pretty apparent but I would say DMS is a bit more subtle in how the plot unfolds.

I enjoyed it.

Poltergeist
The House of the Devil
Nosferatu (1929) - doesn't get any creepier than this

Yesterday night I watched Hanna

i thought it was pretty slick. the (few) actions sequences in the movie were pretty well shot and the soundtrack was great. the lead chick S. Ronan is was great IMO as was Eric Bana (who's always great). Cate Blanchette was kind of not great with her annoying southern accent.

overall pretty entertaining. 8/10

The House Of The Devil

Pretty good throwback horror film. It meticulously creates tension and atmosphere before all hell breaks loose. I liked the build up more than the final 15 or so minutes though, not to say they were a let down or anything.

Suspiria

Meh, too disjointed for me. Most of the film feels like a buildup to...what exactly. Overall it felt like a bunch of vivid scenes thrown into a blender and then randomly edited here and there. Which is a shame because there are pieces that are rather interesting. The music is awesome though

[close]
. between his performance here and in lars, i'm pretty sure gosling is one of the best actors in the business right now.

eyes wide shut: oh. my. god. the first hundred minutes or so are some of the best hundred minutes ever captured on film. the build-up is perfect: the opening scenes with bill and alice being seduced at the party, alice's confession, bill's jealousy and where that takes him... wow. the acting is top notch--kidman's performance in particular is stunning--and i loved the lighting and camerawork. all-in-all, it's an excellently made film.

i didn't care as much for the last hour, though it was still quite good for what it was. and the ending left me unsatisfied--it felt out of place.

i'm going to watch barry lyndon one of these days to see what the fuss is all about.

Rosemary's Baby

Amazing film, can't believe it too me this long to watch it. I loved the slow buildup and tension. The apartment almost becomes a character in of itself, due to all the different personalities and characters it houses. The tension builds continuously, creating quite an uncomfortable and foreboding atmosphere. This movie could have been real cheesy, but it avoids that pitfall which typically dooms "satanic cult/the devil" flicks.

Any suggestions for similar films? I watched House Of The Devil last week, which I liked as well. Both films are slow burns with shocking climaxes

It's really funny how much of a douche Bruce Campbell portrays himself as in the movie.  Ted Raimi as the Chinese guy is hilarious.  7/10

I love Bruce. I'll have to pick that up.

It's relatively entertaining, but I wasn't crazy about that film. A lot of the writing felt kinda, forced. As you know I typically enjoy fourth wall stuff but My Name Is Bruce is not a great example. Shit, even Pauly Shore is Dead was better imo.

Still, it's worth watching.

just watched The Green Hornet

amazing. Easily the best film I've seen this year, only complaint is it's a little long.

Wait, multiple people are using terms like "amazing" and "awesome". Eh...it was okay and had some nice moments, but the final half hour or so was dumb as dirt and the action scenes got really flat and bland [and really DARK]. I admit, though, I liked some of the humor, but other times the writing fell flat. Also, Seth Rogen didn't need to be in this, considering he was mostly out-acted and less interesting than both Jay Chou and Christoph Waltz in any given scene.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
WHY were they so dead set on leading a band of gun and rocket launcher-wielding thugs back to the newspaper headquarters [which still seemed to be well-staffed in the middle of the night]? What, he didn't have internet access back at his mansion? And...uh...why didn't his CAR have internet access. Heck, he didn't have a PHONE????????? Most of the writing up to that was actually pretty decent [although the fight between Kato and Britt felt too forced and too sudden after them being best buddies up to that point, but the way that all played out was just totally brain dead and didn't make one bit of sense. Same goes for the press conference that he did during the middle of the day after being shot in the middle of the night and still not having any proper medical care. I just don't buy that at all.

So, decent first hour or so with some fun moments tacked on to a totally lackluster final act with flat, bland action scenes and bad, bad writing. I'll give it a low 7 because it did manage to keep me entertained for the most part, but I'm not going to ever watch it again.
