I saw The Exorcist II when I was younger and man I remember it being bad.  It's in my Netflix instant streaming queue but ehhhhhhhhhh.  Is Exorcist III supposed to be better?

Exorcist II is universally panned, I wouldn't bother with it. Exorcist III was written by the original writer of The Exorcist and is generally better received.

@GreatRumbler

not outright horror, but a lot of horror movies can learn from the slow build up of tension, dread and the culmination of an intense finale in Straw Dogs

The trailer alone was better than Prince of Persia. It actually looks pretty good, not an overemphasis on action and even seems to have some drama in it, very understated for the most part. It's also got Andrew Stanton directing and writing [with the help of Michael Chabon on the later], so there's definitely a lot of talent there to make something good.

I don't find ANY horror film scary and I don't think I ever have but despite this it's among my favorite genres.

I know it's not a standard horror flick but Stepford Wives is another great 70's build up movie alongside The Exorcist.

A worthless remake without the man, the myth, the legend that made the original movie work.

The cast of the remake just really doesn't do anything for me, as far as what there was in the trailer. It also feels like they gave away too much too early. Some of the scenes look like they're trying to fancy it up a bit too much, but they're keeping it isolated in Antartica, so there's a bit of hope for it perhaps.

It doesn't appear to have any of the charm of the original which begs the question why? Which we all know the answer to.

Akira live-action film NOT dead:

Quote
Is the live-action Akira dead, or is it not? That status has been a big question mark more than once in the past couple years as directors and screenwriters have tried to develop a new Americanized live-action version of the classic manga and anime by Katsuhiro Otomo.

Now we know that the new version is very much alive, as WB is looking to Jaume Collet-Serra, the director of Orphan and the Liam Neeson action thriller Unknown, to direct Akira.

Variety has the report, saying that the budget for the film has been pulled back to about $90m — that’s down considerably from what was looking like a $150m movie in its most recent incarnation when Albert Hughes was going to direct.

It sounds as if the latest script, by Harry Potter screenwriter Steve Kloves, is still in play. (Book of Eli writer Gary Whitta wrote an early draft, and Albert Torres and Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby also wrote drafts.) The film will still be set in New Manhattan, with Variety describing the story only as following “the leader of a biker gang who saves his friend from a medical experiment.” So that’s all info that hasn’t changed in the past month or two.

And still we have zip for casting info. That will still be one of the big points of concern and curiosity for many. Based on what we know, be prepared for actors who are (a) white and (b) older than the characters in either previous incarnation of the story. If you’re not ready to accept both of those points, best to just ignore this one altogether, at least until there is some footage to demonstrate how it all turned out.

Can we predict how it might turn out based on this directorial choice? Jaume Collet-Serra’s star is certainly rising, assisted by the fact that Orphan and Unknown both performed well, with the latter turning up $130 globally on a $30m budget. That sort of frugal performer makes studios happy, and if Jaume Collet-Serra can keep that profit proportion while tripling his Unknown budget for Akira, WB will do OK.

But will the story be in good hands? I like the idea of Steve Kloves scripting as he’s proved several times that he can really condense material well. But Collet-Serra didn’t quite manage the deeply silly aspects of Unknown. Enough of Akira has the potential to also look ridiculous on screen that the wisdom of this choice will have to be proven as the project moves forward.

I too don't find horror movies scary, but I love when they have an awesome atmosphere whether it be ominous, tense, whatever.  Verbinski-Ring is perhaps my favourite film, and among other things, it's because of the awesome atmosphere.

Saw
was a bit of a surprise in that regard - I was expecting a boring gore-fest, but it actually had very little gore, great ideas, and a great atmostphere.  Something I'm guessing can't be said for the sequels (I only sat through half of Saw 2 before switching off in disgust).

The writing is excellent.  "If you're the devil, make the straps disappear"  "Much too vulgar display of power, Karras."  That's just fucking badass.  That makes the devil more badass than any scene you could write with cuss words and levitation.  It has a smart script.  That kind of shit is lost on most horror movies today and most definitely on exorcism movies.

Agree 100% on that.

Just like my mother has said she'll never forget seeing The Exorcist.  She said the spider walking down the stairs actually affected her for a long time.  For us, that's tame.  But it was scary as shit back then and it's still great visually.

Sadly, I found it a little funny upon viewing.  But when I was watching it I thought "if I I would have seen that back in the day, that would have been fucking unnerving".

Stranger than Fiction - damn, I really enjoyed it.  I can't sit through a full Will Ferrell comedy, but he is great at playing an endearing character.  Interesting story too.
Did you like the ending? Will spoiler for others.

I did actually, because for most of the movie I was fully expecting them to go for the opposite of what happens.

I first saw it around 3am when I was like 11 years old and while it wasn't exactly scary it was crazy still.  If I saw it at my age I think I could appreciate it but I can definitely see how it might be funny now.  Especially since so much of the movie has been recreated and poked fun at through pop culture.  Especially certain scenes such as the spider walk.

I also agree about Saw.  The first Saw was great.  After that?  Booooooooring.  It's like Hostel but takes itself way too seriously.  I was super excited for Saw 2 but I never finished it either.  It exacerbated the worst traits of the original.

Dude should focus on a sequel to Orphan. That movie was gold.
I don't see how that would work, but I very much agree that Orphan was good shit.  Waaaaaaaaaaaay better then I expected it to be.

Hey, didn't he also helm the inexplicably non-shitty House of Wax remake with Paris Hilton.  This guy seems to thrive on challenging projects.

best thing about it was it gives you some legitimate horror shit in between long periods of build up, and like you all said when shit finally goes down you're not just shocked but worried for the main character. It was just a hurricane of holy shit!

yup. I need to see more movies like this, gimme a list. I saw Rosemary's Baby last month, god it was amazing. I had seen parts before/knew what it was about, but had never sat down to watch it. Stunning

Trick R Treat (that 2007 hilarious "horror" movie.  I think willco recommended it here once)

I shall list more when I'm back from work.

Oh, also, I saw the newest Harry Potter last night with a friend who payed for me (nice).  It was, as expected, Harry Potter.  Fun, enjoyable, unnecessary humor, dull at times, but still a good experience.  It's not the best movie of them all, but its in the upper tier.  My rankings:

DH Part 1 > PoA > DH Part 2 > HBP > OotP > CoS > SS > AIDS > GoF

Jacob's Ladder is friggin ace.  Well worth watching.

As for Ju-On, well, there's just so damn many Ju-On's out there.  I've always enjoyed the premise of the films more then their execution, but the American versions are only moderately inferior to their Japanese precursors.  At best they're pretty good but not wholly satisfying.

and Susperia is great, but I actually enjoy Argento's crime thrillers more.  Deep Red and especially Tenebre are just about perfect "fun horror" for me.  I haven't seen Opera yet (the implied eye violence freaks me out), should I pursue that?

Didn't DKR just start filming recently? How could there be a teaser already? Nolan works fast.

It's not like the teaser shows that much, some clips from the other two movies as a set up and then a few seconds from two different of DKR.

They've been filming for about 80 days, by the way.

And how is Jacob's Ladder?  I heard it was pretty good.  Never seen it.
The acting is very good, all around. The sets, make-up... so much to like in that move. But it's not really horror. It might be "existential horror" but it's difficult to qualify into a specific genre. I enjoyed the chiropractor's role in it. The movie has a really good message.

Also The Grudge?  Never saw that either.  I confused it with The Ring when I was younger and never had interest.  But I heard Ju On was pretty awesome
Ultimately this was a very disappointing movie for me. Less the slow build and suspense of The Ring, and instead closer to American slasher films. It's got a lot of boo-scares in it, it doesn't make a lot of internal sense, and it's largely a question of how people are going to die, rather than wondering whether or not they will die.

See the Japanese version of Dark Water if you haven't already. Honogurai Mizu no Soko Kara, I think. It's by Nakata, the director of The Ring, and has a similar burn-rate. Do -not- go to YouTube for previews, it will spoil several good scenes.
