The Adjustment Bureau - for the first hour i was convinced that this was going to be the absolute best Philip K Dick movie ever made

and then they give it a sappy, happy ending which felt like a huge HUGE cop out.

but that first hour, man, fucking gold

Pretty much agree with all that. I actually found the romance plot line to be kind of a bore and, as was mentioned later in the thread, Matt Damon's characters comes across as a bit of a creeper. Ending was a total letdown, felt like it was building to something big and then it's just...oh well, happy endings for everyone!

:lol

I own the 5 disc blu ray with all the cuts and I'd only ever watched the final cut and directors cut.

I saw it on Netflix one night and my wife had never seen it so I just figured it was easier to stream it.  I kept telling her how awesome it was.  Then the narration started.  Oh god oh god oh god oh god.  I had to turn it off and just put the blu ray in.

Yeah, he really didn't want to do it. Maybe he didn't purposefully make it as bad as possible to try to sabotage the narration, but he definitely phoned it in big time. Certainly didn't help that the narration was really poorly written.

Speaking of bad narration, if anyone happens to own a copy of the move Empire watch the special features.  There are deleted scenes where Leguizamo stutters on the narration and he was going to keep it in.  There are random crackhead dudes peeking into shots and shit.  It's hilarious.

Every time I watch this I can't recognize Vince Vaughn because he's so young looking. I really like this movie and how it's about getting over love, which is really relatable. The dialogue and call backs to other movies is great, too, though sometimes unnecessary. Perfect ending.

Edward Scissorhands

I haven't seen this since I was a kid, and honestly save for the final 30 minutes and the scenes with Vincent Price I'd call it overrated. Still a really fun movie with a surprisingly dark ending. When Burton was at his prime.

Vincent Price died before they could film the original, happier ending.

I think the whole thing is brilliant.  Especially the visual aspect.  I think this is one of the cases of people being so used to seeing something played out that they can't differentiate it from where it originated.  it's uniquely funny, dark and visually inspiring.  Awesome fucking movie IMO.

hey Jarosh, while I agree with a lot criticism of Nolan, that Inception article lists Donnie Darko as a "vastly superior" movie.  Now that's funny.

Nolan makes technically bad movies but I ultimately find them extremely entertaining and apparently so do a lot of people.  I don't think he's trying to make artistic movies.  Just slightly different blockbusters.  I'm okay with that.  Then again, I'm able to find Tron and Transformers entertaining too but if I was to put on my critic glasses I'd tear that shit apart.

You can be stimulated in lots of ways from a movie. I don't have to be intellectually stimulated by an action movie. Im not forcing myself to like it. I like it in enough ways that I don't cringe by the bad writing. I just don't care that Leo is speaking in exposition because I'm thoroughly entertained by other aspects. I don't to be disgusted by everything a movie doesn't do well and i don't have to "turn off my brain". If inception tried to sell a deep drama with developed characters then I might care that the writing is subpar but it doesn't so I don't.

i don't understand nolan haters. you can find a much easier target to vent your frustrations than christopher nolan, who makes very entertaining and extremely well made films. just sounds like a contrarian trying be edgy in my opinion. Opinions and opinions, but to say Inception is poorly made or even poorly executed reeks of attention starved desperation.

Cowboys & Aliens

Half of a pretty good Western awkwardly welded to a really dully, really cliche scifi-action movie. That pretty much sums up everything here. The first 30 minutes or so are really good, but it gets dragged down by the introduction of aliens and lots of CG battles chocked full of random explosions. The last 30 minutes [i.e. the final battle] is DUUUUUUUUUUULLLLLLL. Craig and Ford lend far more credibility to this movie than it deserves, but Olivia Wilde is nothing more than a pretty face. It's not awful, in fact it's better than a good number of major blockbusters [transformers], but it's just...not good. Whacking off the scifi part and just making a straight Western likely would have resulted in a much better movie, though it would still have been written by Orci and Kurtzman, so maybe not.

Also, lol @ Nolan-haters. Get a life loosers.

Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Nightmare Before Christmas, Batman Returns all own.

Batman 89 sucks. I loved that as a kid. I rented it like once a week for months back in the day. Went back to it the other month...ugh.

Batman Returns, however...still amazing. STILL AMAZING.

I'm a fan of his Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as well. I know a lot of people give it guff, but as a fan of the book I really like it.

Batman Returns is crusty semen infused shit, stfu.

I like Nolan films.  I can easily tell you all their faults but it doesn't change the fact his movies make me... happy?  Am I ever happy?  Something close to happy but not quite.  The fact is successful directors tend to make movies that have to be interesting and accessible.  The exposition in Inception is annoying, but in order to justify the budget Nolan needs to make his films satisfy a large amount of people.

As a nintendo fan I also like his gimmicks.

Its unabashedly stoopid.  First of all, not a lot of batman to be had.  Its mostly a movie about Penguin exchanging innuendo with Catwoman and some asinine megavillian for mayor plot.  The dialogue is bad.  The scenarios are bad.  Batman straight up murders a henchman and grins like a jackass afterwards.  Batman Forever has FAR more redeeming qualities at the end of the day.

I think Batman Returns is the best Batman because it perfectly highlights that Batman is no different from the people he squares up against. I think you're wrong. There's plenty of Batman. There is however, very little Bruce Wayne.

Saying the movie is "mostly" about Penguin and his megavillain mayor plot is pretty 100% wrong.

Batman Returns is certainly a better movie than Batman, and it's a very watchable movie, but as a Batman film, it's fucking terrible.  And Emcee is right about it not being about Batman as much as it was about Penguin and Catwoman.  From my understanding that was intentional and it was certainly pretty widely remarked on in the reviews at the time.

It's definitely not the best Batman film, and I'm not even one of those guys that puts Nolan's Batman on pedestal.

Pretty much. Burton made no qualms about not caring about the character and simply wanting to do his own thing. Still, the movie is quite entertaining and has some great music.

It's clear what the best one is:

Also, the argument that Batman Returns doesn't have enough Batman is stupid, as Catwoman and Penguin symbolize two halves of Bruce Wayne's fractured self: the man in the mask, and the boy without parents. The contrast between the three is what makes the movie so compelling as a comic book film, but I'm guessing COMIC BOOK NERDS always have to have the same sob story every single movie or something.

I'm not a comic book nerd at all and hate 99% of superhero movies in general.  Returns is just the tackiest/tactless Batman movie.  If I remember correctly there's an attempted invasion with an army of penguing sporting... was it missle launchers?  I think so.  It was mighty dumb.

edit:  You never addressed BATMAN KILLS A HENCHMAN and smiles about it aftetward.  Whadafuuuuuuuuuu

edit2:  Batman and Robin is tackier come to think of it.  Returns still bites.

I said before that even though I trust Nolan this movie has been looking average so far. And I'm a huge Nolantard.

I think I'll wait at least until they release something more than a really short teaser and some random set pictures.

You're comparing Batman Returns to Suikoden Tierkreis? Tsk tsk, horrible troll. I'd bite if it were Batman and Robin!

Cowboys and Aliens

Saw this last night. It wasn't perfect but I enjoyed it the most out of all the summer flicks I've seen this year. My only problem with it is a plot point that occurs half way, which was distinguished mentally-challenged even if it is a movie about aliens abducting cowboys.

Spoiler:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The part where one chick is resurrected by fire after dying and then saying,"I sorry I deceived you, but this I took upon this form blah blah blah blah" and just HAPPENS to have a history with the aliens and just HAPPENS to know how to defeat them

Small world coincidental bullshit is my most hated storytelling technique as it rarely - if ever - manages to give the audience a smidgeon of credit and almost always comes off as hamfisted and forced, usually random taking me out of the story.

Other than that, movie was pretty good.
