UNTHINKABLE
for those that don't know. this is a movie about a dude who claims there are 3 nukes in three american cities and Sam Jackson is a veteran interrogator who is brought in the get info out of him.
the absurdity in this movie is palpable. there's not a single hint of subtlety or finesse to be found here. every scene is basically Sam Jackson being Sam Jackson while everyone in the room yells YOU'RE A MONSTER!!. The character tone swings so fast from being with each other to being against each other. This happens not just between scenes but during the camera cuts. Sam Jackson does some evil shit and the characters react accordingly when it happens but almost directly after it's almost as if they have forgotten and everything is reset. Here's an example:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Near the end they bring the bad dude's wife in and sits her right in front of him. they start to threaten to harm her when everyone else begin to object. They start to get her out of the room when Sam Jackson FREAKS OUT and fucking SLITS HER THROAT. They drag him out as she's bleeding out on the floor. THE VERY NEXT SCENE has the same people now back to Jackson's quarters telling him he needs to go back. There's not a single hint of animosity or bitterness especially from Carrie Fisher (who's supposed to be the "good" guy in the story). Everything is reset.
[close]

^^ the above details a pretty evil thing he does. But then later on it's almost as if it never happens.

Worse of all - Jackson is supposed to be the vet at this but at no point do we get an idea that he's close to getting info. The whole movie it pointless.

And the ending is awful.

shit sucks

Fish Tank

Do British people really swear this much?  Or is the area the film covers the equivalent of the US "hood"?  All these six year old kids swearing like crazy was kind of disturbing.  Everyone in general seemed pissed off at everyone and extremely unfriendly.

Otherwise it was an interesting character piece with some good performances from the main girl and main guy.  Interesting look at an area of England not usually covered in the British foreign films I see.

The Protector

Tony Jaa isn't Jackie Chan, and that's the main problem here. The reason Jackie Chan's movies are so much fun and so enduring is for two reasons: 1. Jackie Chan has amazing fighting ability [which Tony Jaa has] and 2. Jackie Chan has charm and charisma [which Tony Jaa doesn't have]. JC was good at playing a likable, fun, every-man character who was easy to root for. Tony Jaa approached every situation and fight with a mask of grim determination and so his movies end up being more like Johnny To actioners than JC's fun kung fu adventures. Still, Tony Jaa's fighting abilities always amaze and he's got plenty of opportunities to show off [including an absolutely incredible long-take fight scene that's sure to go down as one of the best ever] and this is a slick movie with international locations and a decent story/acting [though who cares about that?]. Overall, it's pretty good, but it hard not to think that it would have been even better with an in-his-prime Jackie Chan as the lead instead.

:rofl

I hope they keep the first ending that had to be cut from the original to avoid an R rating back in the 70s:
[youtube=560,345][/youtube]

This was before PG-13/Temple of Doom, ah. That scene didn't seem violent, even from a subtle perspective; M Night may make shitty movies, but he typically does a good job with violent scenes that have no blood or on screen "violence." Whereas that was kinda just..eh ok

Tangled

Very good from beginning to end. Truly felt like a throw back Disney fairytale classic, a far cry from the Shrek-esque marketing and promotion. The songs were great, as was the musical score. Overall it felt like such an effortlessly perfect animated film, as if the creators knew the playbook front to back and just re-created past magic with modern flare - but not too much; there's little adult humor or the pop culture nods that become stale in the hands of average writers. Maybe I'm being crazy, but after seeing it twice I truly feel like it will be considered a classic Disney film in a decade or so.

It also drove home the fact that The Princess And The Frog wasn't good. Tangled basically does everything right that Princess And The Frog did wrong. No ugly attempts at modern sounding songs from big artists, no over-reliance on "cute animal sidekicks," etc. I'm not saying it was a bad film, but it would be completely forgettable if not for the "black princess" thing

This is certainly not without its truth. Although, as chronovore mentioned, BRUCE LEE. Sammo Hung was no slouch either, he had his moments.

Tangled.... awful??? No fucking way.  I could see it not being someone's cup of tea, but for someone who's familiar with and into animated films, it's great.  It really is a modern throwback to Disney's classic Princess era.  Not to mention, if you see it in 3D it's fucking incredible.

And to be fair, I really liked Princess and the Frog.  Its problem is that it wasn't trying to be a throwback, it was trying to seriously recreate the atmosphere of classics.  It had the animation and art, but the actual content was lacking.  The story was lackluster and cliche and made the movie feel like nothing was special.  It felt like someone had a checklist of what made a Disney movie and hit every mark and threw in a Neyo song for marketing.  Still better than most of the trash that's released as animation nowadays though.

Tony Jaa is coming back, in a sequel to The Protector/Tom Yum Goong

Quote from:
The $12-15 million film will shoot in native 3-D from July with Tony Jaa (พนม ยีรัมย์) again the star and Prachya Pinkaew (ปรัชญา ปิ่นแก้ว) again in the director's chair. Delivery is set for mid 2012. While script and story details are scant, Sahamongkolfilm expects to close deals during Cannes in a couple of key territories.

Sahamongkolfilm is pre-selling the rights to the film to countries around the world, this is a common financing practice that's also great for minimizing risk.  That they're selling the film before it even exists this means that they're confident they can produce the film that they're selling.  So look forward to more violent knee-to-face punches in the future.

I blind bought Munich because I heard it was awesome and I fell asleep during my first viewing.  Tried to watch it again like 3 years later and it was amazing.  I just don't think it's the type of movie people expect when they hear Spielberg's name despite stuff like Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan and it's still really different from those.  Awesome movie though.

I think it gets a theatrical release in June. Really looking forward to seeing it.

I've recently seen Il Posto, which along with its director Ermanno Olmi, never seems to get quite as much recognition as its contemporaries, but is truly great. One of the best coming of age movies I have seen.

Also recently seen two Oscar darlings for the first time, Sideways and Slumdog Millionaire, which were equally deplorable.

Drunken Master

Really more of a technical display of the actors' fighting abilities than an actual movie. A lot of the plots threads are just there to string together the various fight scenes, and more of them are completely forgotten by the end of the movie. Nevertheless, it's got some great fights in it and some nice moments of humor, as you'd expect from a Jackie Chan movie. And all the fights are almost totally hand-to-hand, no weapons or props to be seen. In all, it's fun to watch but forgettable.

Legend of Drunken Master

14 years later, a remake/sequel. This is much more of a real movie: there's an actual plot this time, a lot of characters that do more than exist to be present in the various fight scenes, and better acting. This is basically Jackie Chan at his peak, fast and agile. Some of the fight scenes in this movie are just unbelievably awesome, especially the fight at the restaurant and the finale. It hits all the right notes and gives a purpose to all the fighting, making it one of Jackie Chan's finest. Better than the original in just about any every way worth mentioning.

Phoenix Wright movie, by Takashi Miike, probably.

Takashi Miike is in Cannes working the marketing angles for his latest film (Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai).  He discusses his next project.

Quote from: The dude who made Gozu
But in his next film, there will be very "little blood": "It is a very light comedy that I am filming now, a court drama, based on a video game, the Nintendo game DS."
and that's literally everything that is known about that.  In recent years Miike has been moving away, kinda, from the really freaking crazy movies that made his name known internationally and has become a successful mainstream filmmaker in Japan.  He makes films that have decent budgets and have less to do with sexual perversion/violence, but that doesn't mean for a moment he stopped being himself.

So what do you guys think?

Finally got around to watching Insidious. Wasn't expecting much, so it was easy to sit through. I can appreciate where they tried to go with it, and it was pretty light on "jump-scares" compared to other films in the same genre, so it gets bonus points for those. Overall though, it's hard to recommend. As it stands the movie was in desperate need of a better director, better editor, better actors, bigger budget, etc.

Really liked the

I think your last link is malformed.

And I think Miike is being given budgets to make bigger movies, but he's still doing what he's always done: throw a bunch of stuff out, be as productive as possible, and see what works. He's not married to any one particular project. And unlike Sam Raimi, adding a budget to a Miike production doesn't automatically reduce the level of apparent creativity.

On vacation in Los Angeles, Walter, the world's biggest Muppet fan, and his friends Gary (Jason Segel) and Mary (Amy Adams) from Smalltown, US, discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) to raze the Muppet Theater and drill for the oil recently discovered beneath the Muppets' former stomping grounds. To stage The Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever and raise the $10-million needed to save the theater, Walter, Mary and Gary help Kermit the Frog reunite the Muppets, who have all gone their separate ways: Fozzie now performs with a Reno casino tribute band called the Moopets, Miss Piggy is a plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris, Animal is in a Santa Barbara clinic for anger management, and Gonzo is a high-powered plumbing magnate. With secret, signature, celebrity cameos, "The Muppets" hits the big screen November 23, 2011.

The film will feature four new musical numbers, plus several classic Muppet songs; such as "The Rainbow Connection" and "Mahna Mahna."

Quote from: Vin Diesel
D T the writer/director just landed in New York with the good news. We can start filming this summer. However, there is a catch... in order for us to make a true R rated film, I must work for scale upfront. Not unlike the "Find me Guilty" experience (which I wouldn't have changed for the world)...

Money is always second to art, integrity and spirit... but the real issue is deeper. Can I suspend my life, to momentarily venture to that dark place... called Riddick.

Vin is a true artists.

You're thinking of The Rock.

No, just that having to humiliating having to replace The Rock in that humilitating role in whatever DTV sequel would've represented a certain nadir of anyone's career.

All things considered, Vin Diesel has had a much better movie career than The Rock.
