I wouldn't go with that argument, himu, because I think any competent director can work with whatever source material is given to him...but yeah, I like Whedon at the helm.  Imagine Nolan in charge of an Avengers movie. :yuck

Who do you want to replace Whedon with? A non-comic book fan director? Fuck that.

Esch clearly wants some more Sir Kenneth Branagh up in here.

I was begging for that the moment Snyder was announced for Man of Steel...

Why can't DC seem to cultivate multiple talented directors? Are the exec producers just assholes or something?

DC has yet to cultivate a SINGLE talented director. Nolan already had a couple of good films on his resume by the time he did BB. That was more happenstance than design, I think.

Yeah. I guess what I meant was "keep" multiple talented directors. It's like as soon as they get ONE they try to get that one person to do their entire lineup. Same thing happened with Burton.

"Oh, you did two well received Batman flicks? DO SUPERMAN NOW PLZ"

And Burton's all "What the fuck you idiots, I don't even read comics. Fine, whatever. But I get $15 million even if we don't end up making the movie."

"K THAT'S COOL HERE'S MONEY NOW YOU MAKE SUPERMAN"

Buffy might be overrated or underrated depending on who you are, but it was definitely a landmark in network TV. Very innovative series that most of today's serialized television owes a lot to.

isn't nolan still attached to all this garbage at dc, if in name only?

nope.  he was barely involved with man of steel as it is.

man of steel's production more or less: goyer told nolan "hey superman as a first contact story is cool" and nolan went "shut up I'm trying to write about batman hoarding alternative power sources.  put my name on it if and leave me alone.  actually make superman hung up about a woman's death wait he's already gone.  where was I, chapter 3: bruce eats lettuce in a well metaphor." goyer goes to wb with a Superman Starts script and they're like "fine but it needs to be done quick. duncan jones wants time to make the movie good? get zack snyder, sucker punch isn't out yet but I'm sure we won't regret this later." and then it got delayed by half a year anyway.

and snyder is directing justice league because they're supposed to be shot back to back.  also probably why it was delayed a year.  also ben affleck told goyer to take a hike so he's not really involved anymore.

Buffy was a great live action adaptation of Sailor Moon.

It wasn't, really. SM didn't have any kind of supporting male characters (Oz, Xander, Angel, Spike) other than Tuxedo Mask, who wasn't even really there most of the time. Nor did she have a father figure (Giles.) Buffy never had named attacks or a transformation sequence, and her secret identity was still her, just the "her" that killed vampires. SM's school life was never much of a factor and was dropped entirely later in the series, where as in Buffy it was almost the entire point of the show. As were Buffy's up-and-down relationships with Angel, Riley, and Spike - contrast to SM who was only ever with Tuxedo Mask.

I mean, they're both series about girls kicking ass, but that's about as far as I'd go.

Not sure I buy that, Smith was pretty excited at the Batfleck announcement and kept dropping hints about the suit. They're probably not "tight" but it sounds like they're still chummy.

Dawn = Rini is pretty :ohhh, actually.

Otherwise, eh. Buffy was a synthesis of a lot of things. Saying it's a "great" live action "adaption," even sarcastically, is disingenuous.

Watched a lot of films this weekend

Started bumping out the Jacques Demy box set from Criterion.  I'd seen Umbrellas of Cherbourg before but the rest of these films were unknown to me.  So I started at the beginning w/ Lola

Lola - Requires a bit of film knowledge to really get into as the lead character is based on Marlene Detrich's Lola Lola in the film Blue Angel while the director acknowledges the film as a tribute to Max Ophüls on the title card.  It's a very circular film and the description of it as "a musical without music" is very accurate.  The plot is simple and full of coincidences and call backs from character to character.  I liked it a lot, but I get the sense that I didn't grab everything on the first viewing.

Bay of Angels - this film was made two years later and it's not quite as "big' a film as Lola.  It's more focusing on two characters who act and react against each other.  A lucky, novice gambler and an unlucky, compulsive life long gambler.  They win and lose and fight and scheme and on the one hand it's kind of fascinating but on the other i wish there was a bit more to it.  I didn't understand ending so I watched it a few times and it still doesn't make much sense to me.  It's like the ultimate tacked on happy ending.

Up next is Umbrellas of Cherbourg.

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934 version) - I much prefer the later one.  This one is a bit too primitive and Hitch doesn't quite have the technical skills yet to make up for the much smaller budget.  I haven't seen it in a while so it was all new.

Ginger Snaps - fuqq yah.  Movie is still great.  Love the two sequels as well and found them brave within the context of sequels if not the actual content.  Several things I'm noticing w/ the blue ray that I didn't on DVD, like the little scars all over Ginger's body at the beginning of the film that shows that she and her sister are cutters.  Also noticing the Mom has a brooch in every scene of a dog or cat.  The mom is far more savvy in this film than I originally gave her credit for.  Everything she says towards Ginger about puberty can also be read as being about lycanthropy.

Okay, try it again: How do you think Disney is about to lose control of Mickey Mouse?

Trademark, service mark, or copyright? Hint: they won't.

The company has lobbied successfully to change copyright law extensively and the first movie which was due to enter public domain will not enter it until 2023 at this point, if then. Keen observers expect that legal hijinks will continue to extend copyright on EVERYTHING just to protect corporate interests.

Even so, that would only open up Steamboat Willie and other films to being integrated into the public domain, available to reworking and interpretation, the same way Sherlock and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen have been. As far as I understand it, it doesn't allow people to use Mickey wherever they want, as he's a trademark, which doesn't fall into public domain at any point, unlike specific copyrighted works.

As for how they're "not using him," you might not be aware that he's recently been very closely remodeled on the Steamboat Willie style, and has become a central character in Disney's video game efforts, as well as several new series of short films, featuring the same style.

In summary: you're super-wrong, dude.
