Would be neat to see some balls out 1968 Apes stuff in the next Apes movie (Icarus?). I enjoyed Rise and Dawn a lot, but I feel like we've seen Caesar's story now. Any kind of direct continuation would be pretty repetitive at this point.

On a serious note I can't say I liked the trailer. It sounds like college theater actors reciting tumblr posts. Nothing sounds natural in the trailer. Maybe the film is different. Spike Lee's early films had natural dialogue that flowed, even when it was being heavy handed.

The Hunt- This movie :whew Infuriating shit, brehs. It was very good.

King Of New York- Pretty good. Some of the scenes ran too long but it was a well done crime film. Walken was such a good actor before he decided to become a fucking farce.

Harsh Times- Better than I expected. The final shot is a little cheeseball but I definitely liked this. It relies on some cutesy bullshit to get to its conclusion (which you can guess just from reading the basic plot outline). Training Day had the same dumb coincidences that moved the plot forward.

I think Avengers 2 won't be quite as good simply because they're adding a fuckload of new characters, and that hardly ever works out in superhero movies.

The part where he's looking at his table full of sunglasses trying to figure out which ones to wear and the girl says "just wear the ones with the red frames" and he says "I don't have any" and she picks them up and shows them to him and he realizes he's colorblind and will never be able to join the airforce was pretty sad.

The Expendables 3 leaked to the internets

so i watched it

it's not terrible. better than the 2nd, which was god-awful. but not as good as the first IMO.

It does a far better job integrating the new blood in with the old guys. Everyone gets a moment for the most part. The big action ending is pretty good. enjoyable.

Dawn of the Planets of the Apes

Good, but quite a bit cliched. Decent action and amazing tension. Odd music cues at times. What I liked about this movie is that it shows the apes can be dicks too, whereas Rise was a little too "Humans are good and bad, but apes can do no wrong."

spoiler (click to show/hide)
What disappointed me was the insane amount of plot armor literally everyone had. I was nervous going into this movie because this franchise by definition can kill off pretty much anyone and keep churning out sequels without being worse off. But nope. Malcolm doesn't die. Caesar doesn't die. Caesar's son doesn't die. Caesar's wife doesn't die. Maurice doesn't die after getting shot in the face. The ape that got shot point blank in the beginning apparently doesn't die. And, according to the end credits audio, even fucking Koba doesn't die. Come the fuck on. This is an apocalypse. Have some balls.

Also, I knew Caesar didn't die after getting shot because the best moment in the movie (James Franco video) got spoiled in the trailer and I was looking forward to it. Still, nice throwback having them go back to the house.

Something I liked and was surprised by was how likable Gary Oldman's character is. Going by the trailers he's made out to be the antagonist, but he isn't at all, and his "moment" was cliche but still touching.
[close]

Despite my complaints, it has great pacing and characters well rounded enough on both sides to make the conflict have tension and weight. I'm just not sure I could watch it again due to the cliches and general lack of consequences in the end.

Gary Oldman's moment was saved by his great acting.  Just like most of the human moments it was cheesy and cliche but he was able to pull something out of it by not hamming it up

Comedy sequels always suck. Once you lose the element of surprise with the characters you can't capture it again. The best you can do is maybe have 2-3 scenes that are funny.

some modern comedian needs to learn about the Richard Pryor route. There is no See No Evil, Hear No Evil 2. There is no Car Wash 2. There is no Stir Crazy 2. There is no The Toy 2.

The Hangover would be a classic movie today if there weren't a Hangover 2 and 3. These comedians think of short term money more so than their legacies.

Hangover did 400 million at the box office. You'd be loaded either way. Emphasis is on short term gains. They'd probably make more money if they hadn't exhausted the brand, made something new to create buzz, make it even better than Hangover, and repeat. This would make you a prized commodity. If you just shell out sequels, audiences get may get tired of you. There's no right answer, but I guess if I were an actor I'd try to secure a legacy rather than being a whore. I'd be more rich than 99% of the population anyways.

Was just gonna say.  What kind of deal would Ed Helms' agent have gotten for him for the first Hangover, when Helms was a Daily Show correspondent and secondary character in an ensemble sitcom?  The sequels are where he had all the leverage and would get all the money.

Plus "short term" thinking seems to mean "during their own (and maybe their childrens') lifetimes."  I can't blame someone for grabbing financial security for the rest of their life while they can, especially weighed against some nebulous concept of legacy, which they quite easily might not achieve anyways.  Robin Williams hasn't done a sequel yet, for instance.

Sure feels like it. With Edgar Wright and now cast members leaving.
"Its a perfect script that we had to essentially rewrite entirely and recast extensively."

Also, the set-in-stone release date for this effects heavy blockbuster is now less then a year away and they've yet to shoot a single scene.  Yeah, Marvel is definitely tripping over themselves here, but then again, this will be the first MCU film out after The Avengers 2, so no matter how much the release date slips or how muddled the movie might be, there's still a good chance it waaaaaay overperforms for being a friggin Ant-Man movie.  I would say another sign of Marvel effing up is their seemingly dogged efforts to get a Dr. Strange movie together for phase 3, which seems like an ill-fit for the universe they've already created, and the fanbase seems to actually want more diversity for their super-hero-ing at this point.  Captain Murica' 2, has a white guy front and center, but Scar Jo and Samuel Yell Jackson are the #2 and #3 stars in it, and it did really, really well for itself.
