dawn of the planet of the apes was really good

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I didn't remember much from the previous one so I started off thinking koba would be caesar's bro the entire time.  after the heel turn I expected it to go full lion king where ape-simba wrecks ape-scar.  in the end maurice was caesar's true bro.

I saw ALL YOU NEED IS KILL tonight. It was great. I could have done without the last scene, but I know focus groups wouldn't allow for that. I also caught myself thinking Tom Cruise's character would not enjoy playing Dark Souls.

jesus christ The Raid 2 is long.  It's like 2 exceptionally mean 80s HK Cat III films smashed into one film. amazing camera work though

the scanners blu ray from Criterion is pretty good.  It includes Cronenberg's first "full length" film, the hour long Stereo which is basically young barnabas collins wandering around a brutalist building while the narration mocks ephemera / educational films.  it has "student film" allllllll over it.  Worth watching though as it contains many of the same themes as Scanners and his other early work, but it's def someone finding their way.

I couldn't do it.  I watched about 45 minutes of palace intrigue amongst people I didn't care about (or was unclear who they even were) instead of ridiculous action and said fuck it and turned it off.  Disappointing considering the first one was so awesome.

there's some amazing action in it, but the director / writer needed someone to wrap it all up a bit more

i'm very amused that the blu ray has a deleted 4 minute action scene. it's like the one concession that the film may be a bit long.

The new movie Persecuted opening in July 2014 depicts evangelist John Luther as the last obstacle in the way of sweeping religious reform. When a Senator frames Luther for the murder of an innocent teenage girl, an unprecedented era of persecution is unleashed. An evangelist turned fugitive, Luther’s mission brings him face-to-face with the coming storm of persecution that will threaten the entire Christian community in America.

I haven't seen Donnie Darko since a few years after it came out so I have very vague memories of it. I remember thinking it was definitely over-rated at the time. I'd almost be curious to see it now to try to remember what all the hoopla was about.

I ended up finishing it. Just really goofy. I remember not wanting to watch it in my teens because I thought it sounded stupid ::( and it really was. It completely lived up to my expectations for how dumb i thought it would be. But instead of feeling justified I'm a little sad, since my high school buddy told me it was the best movie of all time, and I shrugged him off because it had Jake Gyllenhaal in it. But Jake was the best and funniest part of the whole movie. I think it actually kind of works as an unintentional(?) comedy. The tone, the 90s CGI, the existentialism, time travel quackery.

I feel like Source Code is its unintentional comedic sequel for similar reasons.

That movie is going to be awful anyway. A lot of people seem fooled by good music, stupid one liners and the assortment of dumb faces Pratt can pull off, but it's going to be yet another soulless, snarky, shitfest Marvel movie.

Marvel's strike rate with these movies hasn't exactly been great, like two of them are good.

Definitely feels like GOTG is getting a bubble of fanboy anticipation that it can't possibly justify.  But then I thought that about Pacific Rim and lots of people still thought it was the greatest thing ever, so.

I think what separates GOTG from Pacific Rim and Scott Pilgrim is that it'll end up being successful.  If marvel does one thing right it's knowing how to rile up the fanboy audience while appealing to an audience that spends money.

If we're talking quality, at worst it'll be forgettable. I kinda wish marvel's bad movies were worse.  I couldn't tell you what happened in thor 2, good or bad.  but I have that playground fight from daredevil forever in my memory.  plus michael clarke duncan was an awesome kingpin wasted on that movie.  and colin farrell on a bunch of drugs.

Was this not the avengers?

The avengers, as far as I'm concerned, is the GOAT comic movie. All this talk about GOTG, it looks great to me. But the hype seems to be getting to some peoples heads. That said, it does look great and I don't understand the apathy in the last page or two.

I think that Avengers 2 will disappoint. Considering how big the first got, it's almost inevitable for delusional backlash of "THE FIRST WAS SO MUCH BETTER JUST BECAUSE". I hope it's good, but I can't help but be cynical towards it.

So wait, are you saying you're automatically agreeing with the backlash or are you making fun of it prematurely?

If I miss something in theaters that I'm really interested in I tend to usually buy them on Blu-ray. I've got a collection that's nearing 600 movies/tv series right now. Some stuff I do leave to redbox and the stuff I know for sure I don't want to spend money on I leave for Netflix.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Good at everything except for the traditional, by-the-books screenplay you could see play out from a mile away.  Wish it was more creative and original in the script, but otherwise was a good movie for sure.

Magic Mike - Good, but not great.  Needed another 30-45 mins and not being so dumbed down mainstream to develop it into a deeper story, but it's still good.  Just a bit shallow.

Killer Joe - Great acting and cinematography/directing, but that finally 15 mins...yeah.  Ouch.  Very uncomfortable.

I really, really liked the Avengers. Especially since it sort of destroyed the whole Hollywood ideal of "a straight comic book like movie would never work and never sell" bullshit that we've heard for decades.

I always thought it was a bit overrated, but it still a really fun action movie and I hope more movies try to emulate the fun, comic booky style of it.

I thought the genius of The Avengers is that it's a comic book movie that strips away all the bullshit. Missing was the standard ten minutes of love interest scenes (for da ladies), ten minutes of scenes showing the origins/motivations of the hero(s), no extra action scene of the Evil Guy doing Bad Things to convince the viewer that he is a bad person.

It just had this momentum that carried you right to the finale.

the rock 'dwayne' johnson basically said he's playing shazam without actually saying "I'm the man of the ages, straight out of the pages. hang on! I'm contagious, outrageous, spontaneous. You can't contain this. I am shazam." for legal reasons.
