Not sure I can fully doubt Marvel after watching them turn some nerd shit no one knew about (GOTG) into a big blockbuster that seemingly is going to make a lot of money, despite the fact that it looks bad.

I wonder why Ant Man didn't have a cameo or something in Avengers, to build up his character and prepare the audience for his weird shit.

Apes.  The ape parts were v good.  The Human parts less so.  I would have liked more w/ the humans to build a bit of sympathy with them before the 3rd act

Quote from: Time Out
To misquote Forrest Gump's mother, Guardians of the Galaxy is like a box of chocolates. Or rather, it's like a vast, family-sized festive crate of chocolates, all wrapped in the shiniest packaging, all exploding with sweetness and surprises.

Quote from: Hollywood Reporter
Despite occasional disregard for the laws of physics, much of the imagery displayed onscreen is so realistic and thrill-inducing that sometimes even the plot becomes almost secondary during the more intensely visual sequences.

Quote from: The Wrap
Part George Lucas and part Chuck Jones, Guardians of the Galaxy has enough scrappy heart and smart humor to make it seem like the best possible kind of product, one where the talent of all involved makes it easy to enjoy their hustle.

Quote from: Variety
The cheeky comic tone keeps things buoyant - as does Chris Pratt's winning performance as the most blissfully spaced-out space crusader this side of Buckaroo Banzai.

Quote from: IGN
From the opening credits to the final reel, there's a genuine swagger about the whole film. It exudes charm and confidence throughout, and is flippant in all the best possible ways.

Quote from: Daily Mirror
A near-perfect mix of action, humour, imagination and wondrous special effects.

Quote from: Guardian
Whip-smart, pop-literate, self-aware humour saves the day (and the universe, come to think of it).

Quote from: Daily Telegraph
A brand new summer family blockbuster this may be, but it plays by old, half-forgotten rules; trimming out the clutter and cross-referencing for snappy, streamlined, Saturday-cartoon fun.

I never doubted GoTG and all the doubt from it seemed to come out because of the hype. Good to hear that it's getting good reviews.

Checked out the "local" drive in

Hercules

Average. Not terrible. Enjoyable. Predictable. Shrug

Apes

Pretty much amazing. Super tense, great characters, well told story with good writing. Just a super great movie all around.

Watched a documentary called Imposter recently. It did some re-creations with actors which I don't tend to like in docs but otherwise I was completely riveted by it.

Also watched Klovn which I guess was a danish sitcom at first but they made a movie of it too. Very funny. A legit funny movie I laughed my ass off during.

Not inherently. An ability to plan and time things properly isn't a sign of incompetence.

Yes but this is a licensed property, and most licensed games that need to meet the release date usually suck ass because they're rushed out. Licensed games where the developer is allowed to work on it in their own time frame and schedule tend to deliver much better products. Batman AA series being a great example.

the mad max game isn't an adaptation of the movie.  it's an original mad max game by the just cause people.  it was supposed to be out this year but delayed for more work or to coincide with the movie.  I'm just hoping it's out by May.

This is true, the movie has been hugely delayed, not quite Gilliam levels of bad luck, but in the same area code at least.  As a consequence, the game is getting much more time in the oven then originally anticipated.  Things are gonna turn out fine I think.

^ Yeah I think they are. IIRC principal on the movie was done like a year ago reshoots aside and everything and I'm pretty sure there were early screenings around March this year that was surprisingly positive. I think both the movie and the game are gonna turn out good.

that's great

i'm never going to understand how studio execs decide what movies are made and not made

Money?

There's no way an R rated Deadpool would make back it's investment.

Also, Fox.

Also, Fox.

they spent $140 million on a fucking sequel to fantastic four, surely they can spare $40 million to make a cheapy Deadpool flick along the lines of the Punisher films budget-wise.

i guarantee an R-rated Deadpool movie made to that test footage's tone and quality would have made more money than 80% of the shit Fox released in the last ten years.
I like how you sometimes think that Hollywood does things that make sense.

Shia Lebeef is second billed, take note of how much his presence has been minimized in the poster/trailer.

Could be good though, I was actually pretty pleased with Ayer's Sabotage.  Its clear to me that his directing skill set is progressing nicely.

I've consumed way too much WWII entertainment in my life to ever watch anything related to it again. Unless it's something that delivers a totally different perspective on it (like The Pianist).

I'm more interested in something like Restrepo than any fictionalized version of war.
