If I considered Halloween III a Carpenter movie, I’d probably rank it slightly below Vampires, myself.

Trailer for MOTY 2018 is out!!!

Amazing.

Jonah Hill written and directed on 16mm film

Eh. Wait and see. I like Jonah a lot but he’s a first time director and this seems awfully derivative.

i'm interested just cuz i know Jonah Hill is a huge fan of Big Brother. who knows how it'll be direction wise but it looks like that's a pretty heavy influence tone-wise

The Thing is possibly the greatest movie of all time, so Carpenter is solid for life.

I'm just saying if we're bringing in shit he didn't even do, let's not forget the shit he did. :yeshrug

What a coincidence! The director of Halloween III also directed a direct-to-video sequel to Vampires starring BON JOVI! You better watch this one before you finalize your Carpenter films ranking, Stro.

I differ slightly with Wrath in that I think Zombie's Halloween wasn't that bad for what he was trying to do, and his Halloween II is so batshit crazy that it's entertaining.

My other offbeat opinion is that Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood is actually the best in the series, since it gave us Carrie vs. Jason.

Work as a producer doesn't count unless the movie is good, everyone knows that mother fucker

I’m not sure why it counts for Halloween III, then.

Real talk, Halloween III is good but mostly boring AF and is only redeemed through the music and the ballsy ending where a shitton of kids get killed onscreen.

Heathers rules. It also cemented the fact that I will try to fuck Shannen Doherty in my lifetime. Don't care if the opportunity only comes when she's a grandma.

I heard a funny story about Shannen Doherty at Talk Show the Game Show.

The comedian was talking about guest starring on an episode of Charmed. Shannen was being a Big Bitch and th either girls were mainly ignoring her. The story went kind of like this.

“Shannen was being intolerable to everyone. She walked up to the catering table and bitched about there not being a good vegetarian option. She sat down on a chair between takes and a strong breeze meant she had to have her hair re-set and she bitched at the hairdresser for not making it wind resistant. When she sat back down, the other two Charmed girls were chatting, and Shannen pulled out her phone and started talking so loud that the other girls paused...”

Host: “Oh, and then what happened?”

I'm watching Waxwork, the ending is pretty dumb but it's okay, but there's one part that made me a bit :thinking .

When the people get sucked into the waxworks, they're usually like "is this a dream, what's going on?" and then something bad happens and they try to get away. When Sarah gets sucked into the Marquis de Sade waxwork, she doesn't say or do anything, she just stands there and lets de Sade whip her and call her a whore while apparently orgasming. Then the (rich white cis male) hero shows up to save her, but she refuses to go with him, wanting to stay an be whipped to death by de Sade. So this whole sequence is a bit sus, but this is an 80's horror movie, not exactly the go-to place for a nuanced take on gender politics.

But then I'm reading that the woman that played Sarah was the girlfriend of the writer/director. :lol And that sometime between this movie (1988) and Waxwork II (1992) they had a "messy breakup" and she refused to reprise her role in the sequel.  :lol :lol

One of the best films I've seen this year. Honestly, from an emotional perspective and how the film hit me at the end, I'd have to say it was the best. Like Sorry to Bother You it deftly moves between humor and drama but Blindspotting swings with much more of an arc into the drama and man does it do it so well. Get out and watch this film.

https://variety.com/2018/biz/news/21st-century-fox-disney-merger-shareholder-vote-1202888023/

It's happening, brehs.
I wonder how many super hero movies Disney will start pumping out yearly.
It used to be that Fox movies actually competed with the Disney releases, creating room for both.

They're obviously going to space things out but that's still going to be a lot of super hero movies back to back.
I don't think Disney has taken into account that here's a finite number of good actors and directors.

And if a super hero fatigue or crash happens they'll be stuck with a dozen of these movies in production.  :doge

Mission Impossible: The New One

The obvious thing to do at this point would be make a movie about Ethan Hunt being Too Old For This Shit, but they avoid that cliche cause Tom Cruise refuses to acknowledge the passage of time.

Plot probably makes no sense if given any scrutiny, but a bunch of really fun set pieces and stuntwork.

Mission Impossible: Fallout

Cruise Missile hits another one out of the park with this instalment. The action coupled with some of the best technical work put to to film in decades push this up there into the Nolan stratosphere. Cinematography is on point and outside of the limitations of some of the gear they used to film a majority of the movie is shot practically and looks amazing. Thinking about how they accomplished some of the scenes in this movie has me aching for a long making of when this comes out on UHD. The nods back to previous movies and the direct story ties to the previous films were so well done, I didn't care about some of the minor plot points. Cavil is awesome, Cruise and co are great and have fantastic chemistry on screen.

There is a scene specifically that I'd call attention to that was in Paris that the music reminded me of the Dark Knight Rises plane scene and it just goes into these cuts that reminded me so much of Nolan's work I would have thought they got his cinematographer and sound mixer.

I love James Bond movies and these Mi movies are giving James Bond a bad name. See this shit!

I can't wait to see what they do next. I need more White Widow in my life stat!

MI FALLOUT was fucking dope.

Been watching a lot of criterion collection films lately to study the directing.

We talked about Japanese new wave the other day and I don’t know shit about that era. I’m all about Kurosawa, Ozu, Mizoguchi;etc. Basically pre-New Wave. So how can I get started on Japanese new wave? What are the main directors and films if the era? And how does it stand out compared to French or even American new wave?

Mission Impossible: Fallout was great. The bathroom fight scene from the trailers is incredible and I'd argue it's the best fist-fight action scene in a western film in the last 20 years. The finale was also ridiculously great. The rest was pretty solid with some neat scenes here and there. Henry Cavill was great.

Not sure if this beats MI3 as the best in the series, would need to rewatch that, but probably the 2nd best one.

Even though I just watched it like 2 weeks ago, I'm rewatching Halloween and doing the ultra gif treatment. I swear almost every single shot is worthy of a gif. It's actually kind of astounding. From cut to cut almost everything is so perfect.

what's your process for making gifs btw? i'm always impressed how quickly you can bang out high quality, good framerate captures. i have a shitty sceencap app that lets you select something on the screen and bounce it down, and the only way i've gotten decent quality shit is a kind of tedious process of clipping shit in quicktime (i know) and bouncing it to photoshop

MI movies are the plottiest movies where the plot is entirely inconsequential. These movies are all basically three action set pieces tied together by well done but totally meaningless intrigue. When you think about one of the MI movies after seeing it, it's almost like a magic trick has been pulled on you.

Tom Cruise's career trajectory is incredible

From teenybopper hearth throb to serious dramatic actor to does his own batshit crazy stunts action star 20 years deep into his run

30+ years deep into his run. 20 years ago was just 1998, I need to keep reminding myself of this.
