Would you say that, or The Crow: Wicked Prayer was Edward Furlong's finest role?

Ed Furlong's finest role is as Jack in 2011's Canadian Classic Below Zero

(Image removed from quote.)

Ed should totally have a second career as a bootleg Norman Reedus for shitty Redbox/Netflix movies, or to confuse old ladies at Walmart based on box covers.

I’ll have to watch this. Wicked Prayer is a pretty high bar. You don’t get to star next to Chubby Era David Boreanaz and Tara Reid every day.

Mission Impossible: Fallout
Holy shit, the cruise missile has done it again. One amazing scene after the other. The music and cinematography was on point.
Even in the busy action scenes it's not just some random fades and faces but you can clearly see what is going on at all times.
Tom Cruise does a lot of crazy stunts in this movie but the plot works well too. The pacing of the movie is also very strong, which is kinda weird for this sort of film.
It grabs you from the opening and doesn't let go. Easily one of my favorite installments in the Mission Impossible series.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: FALLOUT
Slightly more complicated than it needed to be, holy fuck what a goddamned ride, and I am ready for a solo movie with Rebecca Ferguson's "Ilsa Faust." She was also really good in the TV series, The White Queen. Kinda missed Renner as Brandt. Would also have enjoyed if Agent Carter or Maggie Q showed up. Ferguson is the first female agent to make multiple appearances.  That movie was a rush.

Renner has scheduling issues with The Avengers so he couldn't be in this.
The director offered him a role to be shot in the first scene as to 'sacrifice' himself for the rest of the team but he passed on that to keep a future MI film open.

With all the CG laser blasts going on I appreciate these type of films more and more. Not only did Fallout feel like an MI movie, it had glimpses of Bond/Bourne/The Raid and other great action films as well.
It pays homage to the genre while at the same time doing its own thing. I never expected a Mission Impossible film to raise the bar for action flicks but here we are.  :rejoice

I rewatched In the Mouth of Madness last night. It’s like 75% to greatness. It needs a bit shaping up all around, but the big area that’s lacking is that the ending lacks oomph. They’ve already established the metatextual stuff and it seems like they felt they could just coast on that for the remainder of the movie.

I like nudemac's theory that they were already itching to get rid of him and the recent kerfuffle was just a convenient excuse. I wonder what it was, or if it was just being too political on his social media
Gunn announced GOTG3 and a date before Disney said they were even going to do it. Obviously they were going to anyway, but I think they may have intended on shifting to a new and cheaper director like they did with Thor, etc. and maybe not even targeting 2020 with the new one.

It's not unreasonable to think when a large media company, the same company actually, drops someone within like 24 hours of tweets like Gunn or Roseanne, it was more of a "opportunity, don't miss it" type dismissal. Especially considering how often they're willing to give time or "investigate" until people forget about other instances.

The political thing seems like weird, there's tons of people tweeting like that and his bosses have the same political views and actually I'm just saying "tweeting like that" because I don't even know that JamesGunn was a huge #resistance leader on Twitter, I've never seen anyone repost his sick burns that clearly had to be stopped maybe I should just look instead of continuing to write out this incredibly long run-on sentence.

I wonder how the Gunn thing is going to end. After all actors can't push studios around anymore as they could before.
They all compete for 5 to 10 minutes of screen time in the latest Marvel film that they share with at least 3 others.

People like Bruce Willis, John Travolta and Val Kilmer could basically act like 'gods' and demand free airplane rides to the set.

So I wonder what Disney's next move is. Basically tell Bautista to fuck off as well and recast (with the risk of other cast members leaving) or to find some way to keep the gang together.

Mission: Impossible II

The bad guy's plot is to unleash a supervirus (standard) then profit by taking a controlling interest in the company that makes the antidote. Not taking a ransom payment in some untraceable financial instrument, but taking over day-to-day control of a pharmaceutical company after doing a bunch of terrorism.

Decided to watch Mission Impossible 3

I've only seen the first two movies in the franchise. The first one I remember liking although beyond that one scene at the restaurant, I can't really remember anything about it. The second one I remember being hyped at the time because John Woo was directing but I thought it was terrible even though I can't remember anything about it except Tom Cruise being silly on a motorcycle.

This one is "ok". It probably felt better when it came out at the time. It's a very standard by the books action movie of the early 2000's. Tom Cruise runs around a lot. It has all these minor sidekick characters that mostly do nothing. It has a prestige actor cast as the bad guy. And it has a plot that wants to be all tricky but is ridiculously simple when you break it down.

It's a fine way to waste 2 hours but I have zero desire to ever see it again. I guess I'll catch up to the rest of them to see why people seem to like the franchise so much.

Do you watch Bond movies more than once? If so, what do you see as the difference?

I hear you. And yeah the bulk of bond movies aren't worth watching more than once but the few very best ones feel like real movies in a way that Mission Impossible 3 doesn't for me. Like the original Bourne Identity always stuck with me in a way that the follow-up movies didn't even though at the time all those bourne movies were reviewed very well. This movie feels like one of those Bourne sequels in that I know I won't remember anything about it in a month.

I think I also might struggle a little with these Mission Impossible movies because of Tom Cruise. It's hard to watch these movies and feel like that is a real character other than Tom Cruise the movie star. Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Lawrence Fishburne are far more interesting than the lead character so I found myself constantly wishing for more screen time with them rather than the lead. That's a personal bias for me of course but I can't deny it exists.

Yeah, I'm fine with that. "Best Mainstream Movie" or whatever, for movies that make over a certain amount of money in the American market. Lets them give awards to stuff that's popular without having to kick out actually good, but less financially successful, movies. I wonder if they'll keep "Best Picture" as it is or change the name/number of nominees?

Something that always bothered me is that they never really gave awards out to stunt men and women, choreography (be it fight or dance), or anything like that when you can argue that movies wouldn't be where they are without them.

Can't break the illusion that these stars aren't superhuman.

They're doing this because Black Panther/Infinity War/The Last Jedi or any of the other Marvel/Disney films will win nothing from the critics.
All the people from Disney show up at the awards and everyone is like yay diversity, equality, rainbow flags.

And then Mission Impossible: Fallout wins because Tom Cruise is the GOAT.

Next year they come up with a new category: "Best Super Hero movie". Because Tom Cruise has no super hero movie.
But then a real M. Night plot twist.... Glass wins! Samuel L Jackson picks up the award: "FUCK YOU ALL BITCHES!"

A better new category would be "Best CG artist". Between the Chinese dude that created the laser in Infnity War and the kid from India who had to painstakingly remove Kevin Spacey from every frame in All The Money in the World.

They are doing it mainly to get more eyeballs watching so people can root for the same movies they go see at the theater versus the critical choice movies only niche hardcore movie fans watch.

I'm fine with that. It's a business. Always has been.

I'm serious about adding best comedic film and exodust is right about awards for stuntman.

There will be a big debate about just nominate the blockbuster in the categories that already exist, but I'm fine with the dichotomy that exists between box office champs and more niche filmmaking. Putting marvel movies in the same category as Phantom Thread has always seemed silly to me. The world has changed. This ain't 20 years ago or 50 years ago.

You compare the comedies that came out from 2000-2009 to 2010-2018 and it's a pretty stark difference.

I think there are a lot of good comedies that come out every year, they just aren't broad basic comedies. I think Lady Bird was really a coming of age comedy. But I also understand why a movie like Lady Bird wouldn't just want to necessarily be relegated to a comedy nom.

I don't understand the judging criteria here, is it going auto get an award because it got the most money at the box or will they say like 'best film that made more than 100 million at the box' or something arb?

It's best film involving a Marvel character, A skywalker character, a Harry Potter character, or a Fast And Furious character including spinoffs movie. Pretty simple. DC got shut out and is protesting.

They haven't given any detail on the award other than the Academy also said in its letter that it "will create a new category for outstanding achievement in popular film," adding that "[e]ligibility requirements and other key details will be forthcoming."

there's already a very important award for the most popular movie of the year: piles of money

either way i don't think this is going to add much interest in a long ass oscars broadcast

I rewatched Mothman Prophecies last night in prep for Borecon 2019. Still the equivalent of an above-average X-Files episode.

The only way to get interest in the Oscars is to make it some sort of Game Awards show where studios and streaming services show new series and movies for next year and big name directors are awarded for their body of work.
But if they go that route they might as well create something entirely new and keep the oscars a more small scale event.
