EDIT: I saw part of it on AMC this past Halloween and was so  :rage by how they speed everything up to fit more shit in because the music sounded so fucking off

 :holeup

The title sequence sounded like a dance remix  :brazilcry

Are we talking about the bomb-diggety theme song to Friday the 13th 3D?

It almost sounds like a U-Tern remix. :lol

Watched Jaws recently for the first time since I was a kid.

When I was kid of course I knew nothing about film history or film appreciation. So its fun to rewatch a classic through the lens of knowing that stuff now. Classic Spielberg feels like how they do with jazz where a person can guess who the player is in a song just by the way they play the song.

Spielberg will always be the guy who you can just tell who it is by watching it. I really think he along with Tarantino are the directors who you can tell directed certain things just by their style even if you didn't know it was a movie by them. It's a bit more impressive with Spielberg though because his movies are less flashy than Tarantino.

Jaws reminds me the most of Jurassic Park I guess. It's different than that movie but the idea of a mythic fabled creature that is hunting you down feels the same. It's almost impossible to make a movie like that in modern times unless its an alien, or another planet or something like that. Tremors feels closer to Jaws than most of the creature movies that came in the wake of Jaws.

I'll probably watch Ready Player One next even though I had little interest in that film just to do a classic versus Modern Spielberg thing.

Watch Close Encounters if you haven’t recently. It’s his bestest.

The thing I miss the most from that era of film making (mid-70's) is that everything wasn't so manicured.

Houses looked messy and lived-in. Actors wore clothes that were typical of people of their class level. Actors would sweat or have unkempt hair and they showed it. Lighting wasn't perfect in every single shot. It was how it would look in a house.

Which is why movies like Jaws and Close Encounters works so well. It opens up and it all feels authentic. The people feel real and they live in the real world (not some studio lot or professionally manicured set). So as the story progresses and becomes more fantastical, you're still locked into it because it established itself firmly in reality.

You go into Close Encounters thinking its about aliens and first contact, but it's really not. It's about the suffocation of passion and dreams via suburban life.

This was a fine ass surrealist comedy. Comedic beats hit, and the main narrative threads were on point. I went in not knowing what to expect and came out feeling like this is one of the best films I've seen this year.

Watched Ready Player One

That movie is a god damn mess. I have no idea if the book is as problematic but the movie is a trainwreck of I don't give a fucks. I don't give a fuck about the characters, the plot, the villains, the video game pop culture references, etc, etc.

Characters just talk minutes of non-sense jargon to each other to exposition the story or try to establish their geek credentials. It's like being hit with a hammer over and over again. There is never a subtle moment in the film.

You have to have a good story and characters and then layer in the world building. It doesn't work if the movie is just a mad libs of references in place of story and characters.

It reminded me of what I feared the original Deadpool movie would be but wasn't. Spielberg mailed this shit in.

And the movie is way too long. Halfway through I couldn't believe there was another whole half left. I had no idea it would be this bad.

Watched The Quiet Place. I expected another pretentious boring horror movie that was highly overrated but I was pleasantly surprised. While it's not exactly horror the movie does suspense really fucking well thanks to its direction and the fact that you actually care about the characters because they and the interactions between them feel real. Acting from the two adults is fucking amazing btw, Jim deserves all the success he's getting both for the acting and the direction. The only problem with the movie is some pretty obvious plot holes but if you have enough suspension of disbelief and focus on what really counts which is the characters you won't have a problem with it. Very good movie overall, I enjoyed it thoroughly.

It's remarkably blatant wish fulfillment.

The main character gets a love interest who's obviously pretty, but is self-conscious about her looks cause she has a cool scar (or birthmark? I forget). That basically sums up everything about the movie.

I also couldn't understand who Ready Player One was for. I mean it feels like a movie for kids or teenagers but they wouldn't get many of the references which are aimed at my age group. But my age group is way less forgiving of a movie like this with the kind of problems it has.

The movie basically felt like a Twilight for young male teens. Which would be fine. But it executes far less well than the first twilight movie by comparison. Which is really bizarre since Spielberg directed it.

Shudder isn't Shudder TV for the record. The former is VOD content only, the latter has Joe Bob tonight and is only subscribable through their own custom website (not Hulu, YouTube TV, etc.)

Got burned accidentally subscribing to the VOD one when I wanted Joe Bob. Said fuck it, cancelled, and am planning on Youtubing all the new Joe Bob content later.

I subscribe to the real service.

Good news for you though: Due to the technical difficulties, they’re putting up all the movies on Amazon Channels and Youtube TV with all the Joe Bob bits included. You’re good.

Anyway, he’s about to show Cronenberg’s Rabid!!! THIS IS LIKE A DREAM. And he still has it—he’s killing it. It’s like he never took a day off. I fucking love this man.

You should really just subscribe to the real service through the website. It costs 4.99 on Amazon and other platforms, but they don’t even get the full VOD library. For the same price on the Shudder website, you get more movies and Shudder TV. You pay the same price to get less everywhere other than their official site.

(Tbh tho, this is the first worthwhile event that I’ve ever seen on Shudder TV. It’s normally just showing content that you can already stream from the VOD library, so what’s the point of it unless you want Shudder’s curators to pick what to watch for you?)

This film is what Captain Fantastic would have been if completely drained of that mid 2k era idyllic, and saccharine sentimentality. Its raw, cold, and real. It deals with the mental trauma of a parent and its ongoing effects on a child. You're not here to be entertained by their life but to witness the very real plight those hidden to us deal with everyday regardless of their reasons. It also touches on community and why its important. In the last act I was very moved by the example presented as to why we are dependent on society, on each other.

Both the leads are also wonderful together. The performaces were very understated. This film will win awards.

All 13 movies:
1. Tourist Trap (weird classic slasher-ish movie)
2. Sleepaway Camp ( oh yes, Joe Bob does make jokes that would set off REE. The actress that played Angela is Joe Bob’s guest)
3. Rabid (Barely filtered Cronenberg’s body horror)
4. The Prowler (the weakest link in the lineup. One of the better early slasher clones. Was hard to see for a long time)
5. Sorority Babes in the Slimebowl Bowl-O-Rama (comedy with very horror-enthusiast-friendly casting. Directed by the dude that made A Talking Cat!? and a bunch of gay softcore flicks. This is kind of an odd pick so I suspect he has a good guest.)
6. Daughters of Darkness (euro-sleaze vamp flick)
7. Blood Feast (Lewis’ classic gore orgy flick. Never heard JBB mention him before, really. Interested to hear his opinions on this weirdo)
8. Basket Case (I’d prefer Frankenhooker, but this is also a classic)
9. Re-Animator (no words necessary)
10. Demons (Surprised there are no Argento flicks or giallo, but he produced this one)
11. Legend of Boggy Creek (only one I haven’t seen)
12. Hellraiser (YASSSSSSSSSSSS)
13. Pieces (YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS BASTARD BASTARD BASTARD!!,!,,!! Possibly the greatest movie ever made)

That is a killer fucking lineup. The only ones he did on MonsterVision are, I believe, Hellraiser and Basket Case. Might be thinking of USA Up All Night for Basket Case though. Regardless, he did a great job of picking movies in a variety of styles.

I’m going to do this whole marathon.

All the movies should be up on VOD shortly after the marathon ends. They’re already uploaded, but not indexed and publicly facing. There was an error a few hours ago where people were able to access them all. For now, only Tourist Trap is available.

Check Demons 2, it's even more ludicrous than the first one. Also a ridiculously elaborate OST of trending Hard FM tracks.

I’ve seen 2 and a couple of the other ones that aren’t really related. They’re all jumbled in my head, but I recall even those to be amusing.

2 is the one taking place in a modern apartment complex and starting with a teenage birthday party in the film within the film.

Jesus Christ are you still watching

I didn’t realize how much I missed him. And I haven’t seen him do this in 18 years.

I did nap during the Legend of Boggy Creek because I’ve seen it before and although it’s unique, it’s pretty slow paced. Joe Bob loves it because he has has family in Texarkana and he was tracking he Fouke monster’s movement and shit with a giant map of Arkansas as the movie went on.

EDIT: And he’s done and I’m sad :( Bye Joe Bob.

When the family was on Nomanisan Island and really fighting together as a unit, I remember thinking to myself, Jesus I want more of this.  I want to see what these people can really DO both as a family and with fully realized powers. Incredibles 2 delivers.

It's a little formulaic ("you keep saving the town and we still hate you!"), and Craig T. Nelson's voice is not what it was, but this movie was still hype. It was everything Toy Story 2 was: they introduced a universe in the first film and let their characters play in the second film. I cannot wait to see it again at home.

Man, why don’t girls have hair like this anymore? There wouldn’t be so many dudes going gay or transwomen if women paid at least a little attention to their appearance.  They’ve been trying to chase off men since the 90s with their unappealing hair. Third wave feminism really ruined their gender.
