Not surprised in the least. The original movie did not need a sequel at all. But it made $$$ so let's make a sequel anyhow and not get Villeneueve on it and sure why not :\

sicario reviews are not good :stahp

Yeah, the story was already finished after Sicario.

Guess they saw the market potential and went for it though

Sure, no Villeneuve but Taylor Sheridan still wrote it, that's all you really need.

The Endless was okay but felt a bit mastubatory at times. Might give it another watch to see if I can pick up on any clues, but otherwise it's ranges from pretty damn good to meh.

Darn, was looking forward to it quite a bit. Bebpo loved it IIRC.

Resolution was a bit empty too, but at least that had a good ending.

Have you seen Resolution?

And I don't disagree on the mastubatory part haha. I can see that, it's definitely wallowing a bit in its own cleverness. I disagree about the ending though. What didn't you like? I was really satisfied with the ending coming from Resolution.

I was just happy to see

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Them get out, considering the Resolution guys didn't. Like if The Endless didn't have a happy ending I'd be pretty bummed because my biggest problem with Resolution was the ending where they don't get away when they totally should have because in Resolution they manipulated the story's need for an ending to create their own everything tied together happy ending. The last 30 seconds of NOPE was just bullshiiiit. So yeah, in the end I'm glad The Endless guys made it out.

Plus I liked the brotherly stuff, how all the guy ever wanted was his controlling brother to let him go and when he finally does, it's like ok I can stop rebelling, let's just gtfo of here!

Like yeah the ending could've just had that conversation and then they leave and that's the end. Didn't need to have the whole SPEED AWAY RUN FROM THE DARKNESS thing, but ehh they wanted to make it all action movie-ish and I'm fine with that.

I had a dream the other night that I went to see the new Jurassic World in IMAX, but when I got there they were projecting on the wall of a gymnasium and it turned out to be an art film about a teenage dinosaur dealing with growing up but she accidentally kills another dinosaur and the dinosaur she has a crush on helped her hide the evidence.

For Sicario all I need is Benicio brutally and savagely murdering people and looking moody as Josh Brolin hunts him.

Unless they pulled a The Last Jedi it can't possibly disappoint.  :doge

I could see someone finding it too quaint, inoffensive and tired (the New Yorker -IIRC- review takes it as a cautionary tale about not dating computers which in itself was :confused and that it was done better elsewhere). I guess you could also feel the very neat universe being wasted for mostly intimate musings. I like how understated it was, the visuals were amazing -as always with Jonze- and I found it moving. Liked also that it was like a Black Mirror but happy (I wouldn't check but it predates it I'm sure, you get the point).

That film is so awesome.
The most stunning thing about it is the hospital shoot-out scene where they shoot up a floor, take the elevator and arrive at the next floor.

That scene has been done in a single shot(!).
The elevator doesn't actually move to a next floor. So while the guys wait in the elevator the set is changed and cleaned to resemble the second floor.
I also recall reading that the guys in the elevator had no way to know if the set had been cleaned and changed. There was no way for them to see what was going on on the other side.

The entire shot can be found here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lnsOG9nuDA
Note how there is no cut in the footage until the guy with the AK pops up and the elevator doesn't actually move.

2 minutes and 44 seconds of film perfection.  :rejoice

Finally saw Hereditary yesterday, meant to post something.

Definitely amongst the better horror movies in recent memory. Which for me is really only like The Witch and It Follows( I also don't watch a ton and mostly only when its recommended, gets major buzz). Was by no means perfect but there are two sections of the movie that I would certainly put amongst the better sequences in a horror movie that I have seen.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Charlie's death sequence, the lead up, up until the hard cut of the severed head and final act right before the ending were both pretty fucking masterful.

The ending itself though I am still a bit mixed on.

As am I about the direction it ended up taking with it's supernatural themes. Which may just be a preferential issue.

I was honestly sort of expecting it to be a little bit less overt, a bit more psychological, still shrouded in some mystery by the end, mostly because that seemed to be how the film was trending early on. Even though I understand the intent was seemingly to drop the audience into what is the penultimate of this ritual and let the audience experience it as the process works toward it's inevitable conclusion that was foreshadowed. And to be fair, the more I reflect the more I am warming up to the film's decision to leave little mystery left by the end of it. Still

As an unbearable stan of anything I happen to even mildly enjoy, I signed up for AMC™ Stubs© A-List® today. I was already paying $12/year for AMC® Stubs© Premium™, but I guess this supercedes it.

This is AMC's "official" version of MoviePass. You pay $20/month to get 3 movies/week, so basically $20 for 12 movies if you maximize your usage. Is it as good a deal as MoviePass? No, but I always viewed MoviePass as the Grooveshark of the movie ticket world. Like, you're debatably legal, but no one in the industry likes you and your time is clearly limited so what's the point?

And even though AMC owns like 97% of US theaters I still feel some kind emotion supporting theaters in general, where as it felt like MoviePass was designed to subvert that.

Will report back how it is. Not having to use a janky extra credit card and being able to order online days ahead of time is a great start. I've got Incredibles 2, then Jurassic World 2, then maybe Solo this week. I only have until Friday to see three movies! (After seeing two movies in a single month, A-List has paid for itself. It also worked on IMAX and 3D shows, which MoviePass doesn't IRC.)

Sometimes I still love you. This movie was specifically recommended to me as my kind of thing and I found it to be a complete slog. It looked and sounded great, but it sure liked holding shots for waaaaaaay too long. It would probably have been my kind of thing if it were executed better.

If you want slightly better Fauxnenberg, Antiviral (by Cronenberg’s kid) might be worth a watch. It’s not as nice looking or sounding, but it isn’t dreadfully boring. It’s big issue is that babby is trying to ape dadddy too closely thematically, but I let it slide because it’s done well enough and is plenty weird.

It's just the most generic mob boss portrayal you'll ever see, both his performance and the writing. He's a tough guy with a temper! But also family is important to him!

I found out this was directed by the guy who played E on Entourage, and the movie makes a lot more sense if you think of it as a fake movie that got made within the show rather than something that exists in real life.

How is it possible for Sony to make the worst decision every time. Not just making a movie based Spider-Man's worst (or at least, most out of place) rogue, but then going for Leto?

Dude's got an Oscar but I don't know how Sony could look at all the shit during Suicide Squad and think, "Yup, that's our guy! Gigolo Joker."

Logan Lucky: This movie can best be described as "redneck Ocean's 11," (or, as mentioned at one point IN the film, "Ocean's 7-11"  :lol) and that makes sense since this was directed by Steve Soderbergh and written by his wife.  Like Ocean's, it's a heist movie, only this crew is all low-budget and not as slick.  There's a lot of focus on the characters and their interactions.  No real antagonists here to speak of and it's all about the characters and then the job they pull, which in the end is just as smart as an Ocean's heist.  Really enjoyed this.

Over The Top: Never saw this before and I didn't miss out on anything.  This is one of those Stallone 80s flicks that I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about.  The focus on arm wrestling being a big thing is the kind of 80s cheese I can get behind, but the movie is mostly about Stallone's character trying to start a relationship with his son and then fighting to get him back, and the kid's character is just super fucking annoying and dumb.  There's a shift at the end to the arm wrestling competition.  The whole movie should have been about this and exaggerated to ridiculous levels.  :doge

Hackers: Re-watched this again on Hulu.  Can't remember when I last saw it, but holy crap is this even more dated and cheesy than I remember it being.  :lol

I'll never get why so many people really don't enjoy Pacific Rim 2. Going back and re-watching the first one, I really like the second a lot better. It felt like a live-action anime.
Really? Because in the end I felt like it was pretty lifeless. The first one was more anime to me. Complete with characters(like the Russians) who exists only as a presence. Meaning like every good anime it's filled with cool background characters that are purely only cool in thier visual character/asthetic. The first one is filled with goofy background things like that that give a lot of life to the world. Beyond that it is filled with fantastic art direction and a lot of visual touches. Thats very anime to me, where Japanese artists will spend so much detail on making things look cool if only to make the world feel more alive.

The sequel did'nt have any of that. The only anime thing I really saw was some of the mechas and the movments of them. But to me that was at odds with the world of the first anyway. PR2 was such a lifeless and heartless movie that the shittyness and dumbness is very apparent.

Movies I've seen recently:

Blair Witch: I expected more from the team behind The Guest. I expected black humor and a playing around of troupes. None of that here, but instead a pretty generic found footage movie. Pretty bad.

Good Time-Very dirty and real movie. Pretty good actually and Robert Patterson is pretty great in this.

Lady Bird-Honestly, one of the better written movies I've seen. Felt very authentic. Though I think while it feels like that, the story is a bit too by the numbers. Still, really liked it and it was pretty funny.

Green Room-Another movie I liked. Anton Yelchin was enjoyable and it was very tense and violent at every moment. I wish the action was a bit more exciting though.

The Music Box which is an indie theater in Chicago had a nice and I assume rare print of this at a screening and it was for sure one of the best theater experiences ever.

I wish Woo's movies had better home video releases though. I'd love to upgrade my DVD of Hardboild, but the Blu ray is infamously terrible. I don't even know if The Killer or Better Luck had any HD releases here.
