So anybody watch Bird Box yet? I saw Stephen King endorse it on twitter and he said it has a poor RT score because it went direct to Netflix. It’s dog shit y’all, don’t waste your time.

Bird Box is utter trash. Fucking corny as shit and I can't get past Sandra Bullock looking like a late-stage Michael Jackson.

I can't unsee this now. Thanks a lot.  :dead

Awful movie too.

So after The Matrix was pretty good (and honestly it is a well paced scifi film) my friends and I popped in Matrix 2 better known as "The Matrix Reloaded"
This is a lovely mess of a movie but uh, not good.

First, it just starts. There's no set-up, no introduction, no anything. It just starts with Neo/Trinity and Morpheus doing shit. It takes a while until you figure out what the hell they are doing. No one really tells you.
The premise is. Morpheus is still a hardcore believer, Neo is Super Man and he and Trinity are taping a pornhub compilation.
The movie has as much clutter as all three Star Wars prequels combined. Both storywise and visually. Some of the characters actually seem interesting but they introduce about 20 new ones who all end up with minor roles.
Some die within minutes of their introduction.

Remember agent Smith? There's a 1000 of him now. And Neo can take on 1000 agent Smiths without breaking a sweat. Goodbye any 'threat' to the main character.

Remember that line from Morpheus? Something like: "As long as you abide by the laws of gravity and physics in the Matrix, you can do everything." . Well there's ghosts now so fuck physics.
Don't ask how or why but these white rasta dudes can turn into ghosts and work for a frenchman who has programmed cakes that when eaten instantly have women orgasm. How or why doesn't matter.

Zion this big city of humanity is apparently a giant cave that the machines are drilling towards. Why they just now started drilling, no one knows. But Neo decides to start drilling Trinity as everyone celebrates their incoming doom  ;)
How about the program that created the Matrix? Well he's there to tell you that this is the 6th version of the Matrix. Woah. What about the Oracle? Oh, also a computer program duh. Didn't see that one coming did ya!! Wink Wink Nudge Nudge.

This movie is best called: "The Matrix: Nothing Matters". To think that they built an entire fake highway to shoot this thing is mind boggling. Even more so that this was made by the same people that created the first Matrix film. As it was fairly grounded.
Remember when you were like 12 years old. Drawing shit, thinking it would be awesome if Batman and Goku had a fight. This movie is made out of such a fantasy it has to be. Just random shit thrown onto the screen.

Some actions scenes such as the big chase scene on the highway are pretty well made. But overall it is just all random scenes stitched together and that does not make a movie.

I thought venom was bad, but still far better than it had any right to be.

Because it really should have been a lot worse just based on the fact that it’s a Spider-Man movie that doesn’t feature Spider-Man, or even reference him.

I too am actually stoked for it, I guess when I say bad, I don’t mean unenjoyable, but more like an extremely guilty pleasure.

It’s bad like sharknado, where nobody really will argue that it’s an “excellent film” even if you might enjoy every minute of watching it.

It’s fairly faithful to the comic book, considering it’s limitstions and had a lot of cameos I wasn’t really expecting... but it’s a movie about a grim dark spider man villain, so it can never be truly good.... or something like that.

Aqua man is just fully bad though, and I wish somebody else here had seen it to confirm. I would argue it was green lantern level.

I too am curious how they resolve it but am cautiously expecting it to be be a really contrived let down.

My personal theory is that they actually don’t bring them all back to life, and that what really happens is that this becomes the way to walk out actors at the end of their contracts.

Xmas eve I knocked off a couple "Christmas classics" I hadn't seen since I was a kid.

Christmas Vacation was wretched. Even by 80's comedy standards it was piss-poor. There wasn't a single laugh to be had. Usually in a good comedy there are rich supporting roles which elevate it, but they were all terrible, too.  Who is still watching this in 2018 and enjoying it? This is Post-Fletch Chevy Chase, too. No charm, no effort and only seems to come to life when it's physical comedy.

Miracle on 34th Street. Just dreadful. I'm guessing this got passed down because it's a postcard to NYC during the holidays and has some vaguely anti-commercialism theme? Which serves as a template for hundreds of other movies after it. But at it's bones, it's a romantic "comedy" where the uptight woman gets turned around by the (highly successful) handsome, brash man that comes into her life and wins her over. Proto-Hallmark movie. The trial of Santa Claus is a neat trick, but even the actor portraying him seems like a dick. Not a loveable Kris Kringle.

Quote
It was a very merry Christmas for “Aquaman.” Despite a competitive frame, the DC superhero dominated the domestic box office on the busy holiday.

Warner Bros.’ latest comic book adventure generated $22 million on Tuesday for a five-day bounty of $105 million. That’s one of the best Christmas Day hauls sans “Avatar” or a “Star Wars” entry. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” still holds the distinction as best single-day showing for the holiday, racking up $49 million in 2015. Directed by James Wan and starring Jason Momoa, “Aquaman” has now grossed over $550 million worldwide.

“Aquaman” easily placed No. 1 for the holiday, though the trident-welding hero faced formidable competition from Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns” and Paramount’s “Bumblebee.”

Watched Monty Python: The Life of Brian because someone had never seen it  ??? ??? ???

Still a great film. Not sure how but there's not a single unfunny scene in the entire movie.
Surprisingly enough the subjects they referenced in 1970(religion, activism, feminism) are still as relevant today as they were back then.
Not sure if that's a compliment for the film or a failure on the part of humanity to move beyond those issues.

Sicario: Day of the Solado (2018)

 :-\

I guess I shouldn't be too surprised that a completely unnecessary sequel pumped out because the first movie was popular but without the guiding forces that made the first one good in the first place...isn't that good. More boring than bad, I guess. Sicario was a very basic movie that's been made 1000 times, but with the highest level of skill and craft. This one just isn't that. Lacks the tension, the focus, and the cinematography that set the first movie apart from what easily could have been a straight to Redbox movie in lesser hands. Day of the Solado feels like a straight to Redbox movie, or at least a random HBO Go movie.  :'(
It lost some steam for sure and it didn't reach the heights of Sicario 1 but there were still some great scenes in that movie.
They kinda throw you off with the first 15/20 minutes or so when you think it's just going to be Alejandro killing criminals and looking bad ass while doing it.
The whole thing just didn't came together as good as the first film and they kind of wrote themselves into a corner a couple of times during the movie.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
In the end stuff just happens and decisions are made that don't fit the characters very well. Alejandro had no problem gunning down the entire family of the cartel leader in the first movie. Yet, somehow feels he should save this girl.
Instead of Matt saying that killing Alejandro is fucking impossible and they should just let him be. He more or less agrees to their plan that he's suddenly 'expendable' with little protest.
[close]
Word is that a third is being made though and Emily Blunt is set to return so I'm still game.

What was kinda weird plot wise is also that
spoiler (click to show/hide)
In the first film the goal is to end the competition between the two cartels (Sonora/Medilin) and have one back in control that they can influence and manage (the Medilin cartel).
Which is also why they need to cover up all the evidence of what happened during the operation. But that plot has seemingly vanished into thin air when the second movie starts.

They Shall Not Grow Old is damn good. The narrative is oddly compelling considering it’s told through various recordings of veterans over the footage. It feels really short, but the end is done really well and there is a surprising amount of humor. It does a really good job at helping you understand what life in the trenches was like through really clear videos, photos and stories.
