Anyone watch Midsommer? Fuck me, Ari Aster providing me with more nightmares. You'd think you'd be prepared for the viscerality of his style but nope, this comes at a slightly different angle yet just as effective.

Derp guess I was reading the thread a couple of pages back. Haha.

Watched the Super Duper Cut of Deadpool 2 in 4k.

Good times. However, I do wonder about the longevity of these movies.
Jokes such as: "What is Dubstep?" or "Who abused you kid, the guy that looks like Jared Kushner?" are funny now but I imagine that in 5 - 10 years these movies will be much less appealing.
However, something as 'old' as Shaun of the Dead (which is also filled with pop culture references) still works well today.
in 5-10 years will anyone give a shit? serious question; if capeshit is still going strong in terms of box office numbers we'll probably be up to deadpool 7

Yeah, it just looks like a generic Wu Xia movie, like China has been making for years now. It's like, once they take out most of the elements that made the OG Mulan appealing to people, what's the point here? I get that a big part of their strategy is appealing to Chinese audiences, but are Chinese audiences really going to rush out to see this?

Apparently there's enough Chinese people moaning about the casting for the Little Mermaid to make an article on (which yeah doesn't mean much because it could be two dozens shitlords to several thousands) and the whole Winnie the Pooh looking like Xi Jinping, I would imagine Disney is sort of a big deal and I'm sure getting some cultural validation by Mulan coopting Chinese aesthetics and codes could play well.

Now that I think about it, Brigitte Lin could have made a decent Mulan, with the whole androgyny thing going on.

THAT'S Mulan!? Where's the catchy songs and black dragon? Goddam.

You know, in the animated version the whole "she was a beautiful woman in disguise" thing worked because it was animation, but in real life how the hell do you not see that's a beautiful woman. She's not that androgynous.

Pretty sure that was just trolling comic fans. If anything putting that in there makes me think they will never go there with the movies.

Yup, that's my read on it as well. Although, all the alternate timeline stuff being "side" timelines might mean it's straight MCU canon. But not when it comes from the Mouth of Mysterio.

That's all the comic has been, too. No straight man under age N will get why Danny Way's Deadpool (which largely informs the movie versions) constantly lusts after Bea Arthur.

Forget Deadpool 2, in 5-10 years nobody's gonna be watching Infinity War/Endgame, they'll be watching whatever new event film Marvel has going on.

After Endgame, I have absolutely zero desire to see any new Marvel film in the cinema. I'll happily wait for home release of some sort starting with the new Spiderman. Still haven't watched Captain Marvel either. I wonder how many people will be feeling the same way?

It did seem like a convenient off point. I feel like I've seen enough of these things now, and that one wrapped it up nicely. Now, unless they do something spectacular, I'm just going to wait for them to pop up on Netflix.

I'll be curious to see how the next phase does because it feels like they've given up a lot of momentum now, particularly looking at the supposed upcoming slate.

Hollywood is a global business now. This generation of global movie goers are going to want to take their kids to the same kinds of movies they enjoyed during this era (ie. The Star Wars effect). Which means another wave of reboots and sequels in 10-15 years.

The only way to prevent this from happening is a Children of Men scenario.

They'll be gone by the time you're 60

People who were 21 when Superman: The Movie came out are 60 now, so I'm not so sure about that.

I don't want them to go away, I'm just over seeing them in cinemas. They've essentially been commodified for me. I just think that maybe after Endgame there are quite a few people who feel the same way.

The people who were 21 when the Batman serials came out have been dead for 20 years.

Sure, but my point is that even the modern concept of the comic book/superhero cinematic blockbuster is over 40 years old.

Watching BTTF part 2.  I haven't seen these movies since I was a kid and never really liked them a lot.  I honestly don't understand back to the future.  Is it a self-aware criticism of 80's culture or did people in the 80's actually think this was OK?

With Liz it was because she was the cute girl that was in proximity of him.

With MJ it’s because she’s the cute girl in proximity of him that has probably shared a lot of time together.

That’s often all teenage dudes need to be interested in a girl.

Toy Story 4 - Thought it was just ok at the beginning but continually got better and better and finished really strong. I haven't seen 1/2/3 forever but in my memories 1&2 are still perfect and the best, I don't remember a goddamn thing about 3 (and so I had no idea who some of these toys were) but I do remember 3 was good when I saw it, just nothing was memorable, and 4 is a good one as well.

Crawl

Decent. I appreciate a good sub-90 runtime horror movie. I also respect it for not going the "WE MADE IT BAD ON PURPOSE, IT'S SO WACKY!" route like Sharknado, and actually playing it straight despite a premise that would lend itself to that kind of fuckery. That being said, it's not quite the balls-to-the-wall, alligator death struggle I was hoping for. About 75% of the movie is just two people in a basement with alligators, and there are chunks that are just them coming up with a plan, trying to execute the plan, an alligator briefly snaps at them, then they regroup and try to come up with another plan. The violence is also fairly restained for the director of High Tension and The Hills Have Eyes. I get the feeling that this movie was originally supposed to be PG-13 (it even has the classic single PG-13 MPAA-approved f-bomb). Gorehounds will be disappointed. Over all, I did enjoy it, but it was flimsy and lacked the bite of something like High Tension, or the guilty pleasure of Piranha 3D.

2.5/5

The Dead Don't Die

Finally got a chance to see this movie in theater, and I was kinda disappointed. It's a slow, shambling Romero Zombie of a movie, that tries to get by on the charm of it's cast alone. And don't get me wrong, the cast was brilliant, but the movie is just soooo slooooow and the humor is so deadpan that it felt about twice as long as it actually was. By the time it reached it's fourth wall shattering finale, featuring Tom Waits rasping about consumerism and Nintendo Gameboys, I felt like I had been there for at least 3 hours.

2/5

Mothra (1961)

Classic kaiju movie. Glad this is finally on Blu-Ray.
