Fumoffu is a comedy spinoff which was funny for early 00s comedy anime at the time. It's a one joke comic exaggerated concept of a child soldier raised in military & warzones their whole life has to blend in and act like a high schooler and has no social skills at and processes everything like he would in a war zone. The main series is just an ok mecha show. The mech designs are good though, especially the latter era stuff from the novels that's just been getting animated recently.

I’m still processing Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It’s such a departure from Tarantino’s usual style in a few ways that it’s difficult to place amongst his films. First impulse is that I think it’s better than Hateful Eight, but that’s about it. (I liked H8 with reservations.)  It is felt like OUATIH had a bunch of good ideas, but they just didn’t mesh so smoothly.

One thing I am sure of is that I hated how the extended cast was used. Tarantino is known for having these great ensemble casts, and he has one here, he just doesn’t use it at all, although the marketing would have you believe differently. At least Bruce Dern made the most of his 30 seconds.

The soundtrack was also a letdown. I thought QT would kill it on this, but he mostly sticks to 60s standards and often very obvious picks at that. I don’t think I picked up a single new ear worm from this one.

I might have more thoughts later. I’m prob seeing it again this week.

I loved The VVitch, and love artsy shit, but i'll admit this gave me a chuckle in how hard is trying.
Still looks interesting though.

I'm more interested in his remake of Nosferatu tho.

YMS is hit or miss whether our tastes line up but he really liked it.

"Willem Defoe gives a career-best performance in this movie."

We tend to strongly agree on artier films so I do think The Lighthouse is probably something really special.

It's apparently half-comedy, and "actually really funny." So A24's pulling some It Comes at Night shit again I think. It wouldn't surprise me if the movie is much more self-aware than the trailer implies.

TBH, Lion King at least makes a bit of sense to me. I understand what buttons the photo-real wildlife visuals are pushing and will probably eventually give up 2h of my time for it.

But Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin though? Getting to see the same stories told worse and with clownhouse visuals?

I think Once Upon a Time only comes close to working if you have a fondness for Hollywood + (and this is obvious) a decent knowledge of the manson family and what happened in the later 60s.

Otherwise I don't think all of the pieces came together perfectly but there were a ton of great scenes.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Great tension/scene when Pitt visited the Manson farm area. Wasn't sure if they would kill him off that early in the film
[close]

Leo and Pitt were great. Robbie felt underused as Tate with no real character development.  Every other character felt like they were barely used. I dunno. Was okay.

Like all Netflix movies i've seen, it's gonna be all eye catching premises&name, and turn out incredibly mediocre.

After Okja, i'm not falling for it again.

EDIT: Hell or High Water is probably the only one i've liked.

I loved Silence , and i think Scorsese has still got it, the problem i have it seems Netflix is more interested in names than good movies, and they seem to get B-tier projects from A-list people.
Then again, a good movie is a good movie, i don't care where it comes from, they did a couple of decent ones, and a whole lot of shitty to mediocre ones.
I'm saying they have a bad track record, despite the big names attached.

can't get over that they're giving scorsese $200m to make a period gangster film and he's spending it all on de-aging a few coffin dodgers who haven't had a stand out role in decades. just seems like such a colossal waste of money.

the bloke recreated whole streets of 19th century new york for half that. depressing that such a large outlay is being given to a filmmaker to make something other than capeshit and it'll all go on ironing out their saggy ballbag faces as they shuffle around praying that none of their vital organs give out.

is this some sort of limited criterion release because i don't believe they've ever done that? criterion has changed the way they license films to the point you don't really have to worry about their newer releases going out of print. boxsets, on the other hand, take a bit longer to reprint and have caused panic in the past...

i just want some limited edition prints of that art :(

was my most hyped film of the year, but pretty bummed out watching this. flanders was an apocalyptic moonscape by 1917, not a lovely green field ready for a picnic. don't even want to mention the hollywood as fuck saving private wilfred plot.

it just looks all very PG and not at all what anyone who has even accidentally overheard a dan carlin podcast knows the western front was like.
