Yeah I liked it a lot too, despite not having watched The Shining since I was 9 or 10, and having no interest in Mike Flannagan as a director or Stephen King as a writer.

Fletch was fun, though 90% of it is a parody of the type of detective shows that haven't been made in 40 years.

Also, Lorenza Izzo  :hump

Like Old, M. Night didn't write this but is adapting someone else's story (and will probably change the ending like he did with Old).

I think he realized he's a bad writer and so his new plan is to adapt better written stories. Not a bad idea.

If he was the one who wrote that the camera shot should rest on Thomasin Mackensie's ass he deserves an emmy for screenwriting or whatever.

Which is funny because besides Unbreakable and Sixth Senth he hasn't made any other good films (and those two were only 'decent'). Also in his interview with Norm Macdonald, he didn't seem that bright. He seemed like a sweet earnest guy though. Maybe you have to a be a pretentious dick to make good movies.

idk, I never saw the movie but the french graphic novel Sandcastle that he adapted was solid.

That gif just reminds me how I didn't like Logan /shrug

Was a movie where I liked the trailer more than the actual movie. But I know I'm in the minority there and most people love it. It wasn't the Wolverine send-off I would have liked.

I'm pretty stoked for Deadpool though. Wolverine + Deadpool is one of my favorite comic pairs.

Bullet Train was glib but fun. Off the premise I thought it’d be Smoking Aces on a train, but there’s no mean streak and it’s a full blown action comedy. Director is coming off Deadpool 2 and Hobbs v Shaw. If you’ve seen those, it’s like that.

Not to get ageist here, as Pitt looks better than most men in their late 50s. Struck me as odd when he’s playing a character who is written to be 30s to 40s. His contemporaries and rivals are all actors in their 30s. There’s a tier above that of elders. So Hiroyuki Sanada, in rare form playing a yakuza boss with a katana, is a wise grandfather in this. He’s about the same age as Pitt. Yet Pitt is seen and treated like a young man. It’s like that movie where Russel Crowe calls Tom Cruise a young man.

Visually one of the most impressive movies I have seen in quite a while. Shooting long one takes is really nothing new anymore but in this movie it felt especially well choreographed and there is just so much happening everywhere around the camera. Whole movie is about a riot but it's basically filmed with the intensity and spectacle of a war movie.
Unfortunately the final acts comes off a bit lackluster and I honestly got a little confused about what the message of the movie is. My best guess is that there simply are no easy answers and that shit in France is fucked up.

On the subject of long single takes, I can't remember if I posted here but Boiling Point was really good and stuck with me long after I watched it - I'm partially reminded not just by the mention of long shots above, but also because I finally got around to watching Burnt which covers similar ground in the high end restaurant business and the 'rock star' famous chefs vices, rivalries, pressures and grievances (although Burnt is significantly more reaffirming and 'Hollywood' about it, despite both films being set in London)

I like Logan, but evil twin Logan whose the complete opposite right down to the haircut and wearing black was silly in a movie that was serious.

Still solid and a good send-up.

But Hugh returning is easy money. Old actors returning for classic roles is the new trend, doubly so for superheros. After, Toby back as Spider-man and Keaton this was the biggest move you could make. Probably the last big one bar IDK..cgi Christopher Revees. But it wouldn't surprise me if WB has thought about that.

I watched that Licorice Pizza but for some reason it didn't click. I like Anderson's films but I started losing interest in this one halfway through. I don't even know why. There isn't something I can point to. The characters were ok. Plot was ok. Maybe I'll watch it again sometime and see if I change my mind.

Really just speculation and they disregard the criteria

Quote
So before diving into our extensive list of possible candidates, it’s worth acknowledging that producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson have been clear about three things: The next Bond should be played by a Brit; the next Bond should be young enough to be able to continue in the role for at least 15 years; and the next Bond will be a man, not a woman.

Yeah. The 15 year deal is new to me. Moore got away in an era with lesser action and bombast. Craig kept talking about injuries and aging troubles in this last one. Seems like it’s aging out the popular picks who’re 30s entering 40s.

Raging Bull - Pretty good. Joe Pesci is amazing.

I guess the reason I like but don't love this, is just that Jake La Motta is such a shitty person it's a hard movie to love. But it's interesting and well made. The boxing cinematography is good, though at the time of release it was very fresh with nothing else showing boxing like it and now a lot's copied it.

I like 2000s rom coms coming back. The Lost City was a fun time. Side effect of having no young movie stars with charisma is bringing back all those 2000s rom com actors. I’m sure Kate Hudson will show up sooner or later.

This is a perfect way to describe it. There are like three or four distinct parts of the movie that are kinda weaved together, and they're all good (to varying degrees). The characters, writing, and setting really sell the movie for me. I really liked it.

It'll be disposable Illumination pap that will cause billions of internet meltdowns before release but then be swiftly forgotten about three months afterwards. It will also make $900 million at the box office when all is said and done. No one will remember it, until they start teasing the sequel two years later, and the cycle will begin anew.

Even as a Nintendo fan, nothing they ever do (short of the LotR-like Zelda epic that they somehow actually pull off (chances of happening: 0.00003%)) is gonna top the hype of Sonic Movie 3 using Live & Learn in the climax. Nothing.

Watched the new Criterion 4k of Night of the Living Dead (1968). Hadn't seen this in a long time. It's a little slow and tame these days, but still enjoyable and the ending is still gripping. Picked up this release more for the extras (pretty much all of them the same as the 2017 Criterion BD release) than the film itself, since as a horror buff, interested in seeing stuff on the making of it and the cultural influence of the film.

I still don't get why the zombies in Dawn/Day are blue. They look fine in this one other than not being too decomposed mostly. The blue zombies just look so goofy in Dawn/Day.

Is Return of the Living Dead (1985), which has nothing to do with Romero, worth watching? Never seen that one.

Still my favorite zombie movie. It’s pretty much perfect. The 1991 remake is great for cleaning up certain things and updating the effects, but it just loses some charm to me.

Werewolf by Night was just ok. Too generic Marvel underneath the filters. Gael Garcia Bernal is enjoyable as always and Man Thing is cool, but this was just so-so.

Plus I gotta question whether going with that filter was the right choice since

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The end scene in a technicolor filter looks so much more stylish and interesting. Not sure if there's any retro horror films in technicolor to riff off though.
