I just watched The American yesterday too.  Beautifully shot, somber in tone and atmosphere, conveyed well by Clooney.  I loved it.

I loved the atmosphere and pacing.  It's what made me keep watching.  I just wish the relationship development wasn't so abrupt.  Most people said it was too long, I wanted it longer :lol  Loved the ending though.

Watched two movies yesterday, which is kind of astonishing for me these days: Crumb and American Splendor

They're related, obviously, both being biographies about comics creators who were friends and famously collaborated. I was so intrigued by the character of Crumb in American Splendor that I went straight into Crumb (which is a documentary, whereas American Splendor is a fictionalized biography mixed in with documentary elements).

Both are great films, but Crumb is definitely weightier in content. Both he and his entire family are strongly dysfunctional in several ways, but have a quite staggering talent. I literally gasped when I saw some of the stuff made by the family even as kids. Must-see doc, I'd say, even if you have no interest in comics.

It's almost a great movie but I'm not sure what it's missing.  Maybe a faster pace and more external nfo about why Clooney desires a career change?

*spoiler alert*

Also, the revelation of why his boss really ordered the last mission is contrived and dumb.  It would have been much easier to just kill Clooney at any of their meetings.

is James Bond level of dumb and certainly not fitting in a film with a realistic vibe.

I Spit On Your Grave was just a fun ride in the theater.  I can't really imagine watching it again or watching it alone.  And watching Damian from Mean Girls being an evil hillbilly was lol.  The movie was nothing but a lot of "OOH!"  and "Yeah!" and "OUCH!".  That's about it.  I saw it for free at a premiere and it was fun.  That's about it.

How does the original compare in the fun revenge department?

From what I heard, the rape scene in the new ISOYG is sanitized and quite tame, compared to something like The Last House on the Left, which was brutally explicit.

remake of last house or original? either way, yeah the rape scene is fairly tame

Yeah, it really bugged me that he was in it.

The original is brutal and uncomfortable through and through, its just not a very good movie.
He was also some badass football player in Party Down wasn't he?  How does he get those roles?  he's so fucking goofy.  I guess I don't need to see the original.  I don't watch something to be uncomfortable, especially if it's not good.

Remake, it was especially bad because the victim was a minor.  I kinda wanna see the original even though it's crap because there's a scene with the vengeful mom biting off a rapist's dick.

I forgot I watched this last night...

The Kids Are All Right
Laser
Don't be a zoomer!
Right on
jock sausage

The movie was actually good if you don't care about the fact that one of the kids is named Laser and everyone talks like a fucking hippie.  I liked the story, the actors and characters were great but man some of the dialogue was annoying.  Bening was really great in this.  She actually deserved that Golden Globe and hopefully she gets the Oscar too.  Ruffalo was fantastic too.  And as much as the dialogue tried to make the story unbelievable, the actors made it work and I could buy the relationships between all of them.  All in all, I liked it.  It really did feel like this years Juno to me.  That's not necessarily a bad thing if you didn't hate Juno.  I liked Juno (outside the stupid fucking dialogue).

The last 10 minutes of the next Batman film should have Gotham in shambles, as usual, except this time Batman fails miserably because it's just too much for one man.  Just when Batman is about to give up, he hears "Need some help, buddy?"  from faraway, looks up and sees that it's not a bird or plane, but a ridiculous looking dude with a S on his chest and big red cape.  To be continued in a WB film coming next summer...

I think a Matrix sequel could work if they don't make it too complicated.  Just make it an all out war between machines and humans but keep the action constrained within the Matrix where shit's a lot cooler.

I dunno, The Matrix is still a pretty fantastic film. Sure the sequels sucked, but the original is one of the best action films ever made.

This - if they can somehow "reboot" it for a couple movies whythefucknot. (I didn't hate the sequels, just the mythos mumbojumbo either bored me or pee'd me off, and alright but lesser action sequences weren't enough to make up for them)

The problem with Batman & Robin [and, to a slightly lesser extent, Batman Forever] wasn't necessarily that they tried to have too many characters, it was that they said "Well, the Batman formula just isn't working anymore, so let's make it more flashy and family-friendly". They also replaced the artistically-minded [and at least somewhat talented] Tim Burton with the lack-luster stylings of Joel Schumacher and the scattershot Akiva Goldsman.

And at this point we really don't know whether it's going to actually have Catwoman. The announcement only said "Selina Kyle". Dr. Strange is only rumored at this point, as well, based on a Tweet from a Batman movie fansite.

I re-watched Timecop for the first time in neigh on a decade a couple of weeks ago.  Its good.  Ron Silver* is a lot of fun as the villain (the film works better if you imagine he's Dick Cheney) and its dumb enough to be fun but not so much so as it detracts from the film.

It belongs in the upper tier of the Van Damme cannon, but its not the best film he made during his heydey, but its still pretty solid.

*Timecop is one of the very few examples I can think of where a character is convincingly aged in the course of a film.  The young and older versions of Ron Silver look about exactly 10 years older, as they should per the film's logic.  I dunno, its just one of those small things I was impressed by.
"Hey, what's the best example of aging a character in a film you can think of?"
"Timecop."

I'm not concerned about the realism of a Catwoman or a Batman. Catwoman is considerably more cheesy than Batman though. I don't see how she'll be brought to screen in a decent fashion. Nor am I sold on Bane.
