Where the Wild Things Are

Out of the few films I've seen this year, this one feels like it will age the best.

I watched Transformers 2. Annnnnnnd, it was bad, of course. It had some good action scenes at least, like the IMAX scene where Optimus Prime fights Megatron and Starscream which was a billion times better than the Optimus vs. Megatron scene from the first movie. Everything in between the action scenes was distinguished mentally-challenged though (Shia's mom gets high and he almost gets raped by a robot, HURRR!), and it felt like it was about 5 hours long.

The guy who crumbles (I've seen the movie like five times and still forget his name) makes the funniest fucking faces. When the girl goes down on him to give him a bj it's the funniest thing ever.

yeah :lol  so true about the forgetful characters too- the first time you see the movie, you never forget that mark is Johnny's best friend because it's jackhammered into your skull in like every scene.  yet there are characters who appear out of thin air and have nothing to do with anything-- the guy and girl who break into johnny's apartment for no reason and screw, the "psychologist," the guy who chews out mark and lisa at the party etc.

Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus - unfortunately quite bad.  Uninteresting characters, a muddled plot, and a really really smh-worthy performance from Vern Troyer.  I'm sure there are dwarves who can actually act, Gilliam.

Up In The Air - A really good companion piece to Thank You For Smoking, and probably a few notches superior.  Really nice performances all around.  The Danny McBride cameo towards the end was fucking amazing.

Up in the Air - Liked it better when it was called Thank you for smoking. George Clooney plays himself once again, which makes me baffle at oscar rumors, Aron Enkhart or whatever is his name had a much more interesting role in Thank for smoking, but i guess you gotta be somebody to win shit. The twist in this movie, i saw it coming a mile away, which made me sorta pissed that it still managed to have an effect on me, basically because it's harsh as shit on a character that wasn't a bad person. The actress from The Departed is smoking.

Good flick, but if it ends up winning OScars against the likes of Inglorious and Hurt Locker....

I saw District 9 last night, and loved it. Very good hybrid of documentary and narrative styles with a fiction story.

Obviously there's ground for a sequel too.

I bow to George Clooney. Truly the greatest American Actor alive right now. Such a touching personal story. I don't think there were any faults at all, it was pretty much perfect.

Eastern Promises
The Fountain
Blood Simple
There Will Be Blood

The Fountain should definitely be the middle and There will be Blood the end.

I still need to watch Eastern Promises. I also didn't really dig There Will Be Blood when I watched it in theaters... maybe a home viewing would be a better way to watch it.

just watched Blood Simple with lunch.  The plot was pretty convoluted and had more than a few holes in it (like the complete lack of a law enforcement angle), but there were a bunch of really great scenes that made it all worth it.  Seemed like they used a lot of ideas from this movie in No Country For Old Men.

I've seen all of those except Blood Simple.

Eastern Promises is probably the most...entertaining of those movies. But I'd say TWBB and The Fountain are better.

TWBB is like a build up film that bubbles for awhile before exploding (in a good way). The Fountain is just awesome imo, fuck haters. And the soundtrack :bow :bow :bow

I'm not ranking them for quality.  I just think The Fountain is really different than the other ones, and TWBB has an awesome ending.

anyway, Up in the Air was pretty awesome.  I want the lifestyle george clooney had in that movie.

The Fountain sounds pretty interesting.  Can't believe companies gave Aronofsky that kind of money to make it. :o  I think they thought they were getting the next Christopher Nolan/Peter Jackson (awesome low budget director turned into blockbuster maker)

The movie that ended up being made wasn't even Aronosky's original vision. It was actually originally greenlit for $70 million, but production turned into a disaster. What we got had half the budget.

I checked out the Coraline BR in 3D a few days go. Wowie zowie. At 2am in a darkened room on a big TV, it was pretty crazy. Loved the film and the soundtrack, enjoyed it more than the fairly mediocre book, actually. If you do get it on BR, give those little glasses a shot. You might be surprised at how well it works.

Got a total of 10 mins into Moon last night before being derailed by daughter drama. Really sucked me in though.

Pretty intriguing concept. And the movie wasn't that bad either. But it just lacked something...

Watched Moon last night, in glorious 720p download-o-vision. I honestly saw most of the plot coming, but it was still quite affecting. Wasn't a huge fan of the voice-over at the end - it had the stench of studio directive about it. Other than that, great little film.

So of all the movies you told me to watch while slamming me for my comment on Aliens, the one I haven't seen is Miracle in Milan. How is that? I'm assuming it's good if you listed it alongside OUATITW and The Godfather, but what am I in for with that one?

It's by Vittorio De Sica, a precursor to the neorealist stuff he made.  Basically a fairy tale with political undertones.  I don't want to spoil it for you, you really need to watch it.

It has Brunella Bovo, who is so cute.  She was also in Fellini's The White Sheik. :heartbeat

Pretty sure the voiceover was the director's idea, he's planning on a sequel to it that takes place on Earth.

So I gather by the end of the film, faith in humanity is restored by boosters? That's pretty ingenious. They bypass all the laws and scrutiny that come from simply bribing black kids to play for their alma mater by adopting and training them instead.

It's like the NCAA Manchurian Candidate.

There was a 20/20 piece on the real dude and it was kind of uncomfortable to watch. Its hard to tell if they actually exploited him or they really cared for him. The clips I've seen of the movie itself vs. the real life guy are hilarious, the movie seems to paint him as some mentally stunted dummy.
