I read your blog post that was just as long. Don't be a dick.

I scanned it and it contained the words "Ichirou" and "Titanic", so I immediately bailed out. You might be able to troll Ichirou, but I'm not getting wrapped up in that. In fact, you both should simmer down, considering there's a new whipping boy (see: outside link thread) and he has already warned us that mockery will not go well.

The Ichirou thing was just a disclaimer, because for whatever reason he loves to write stuff like "OMG, you compared ______ film to _____ piece of classical literature, what an idiot!" if I try to draw parallels between works where a clear qualitative difference exists. I didn't actually talk about him.

Titanic was just in the last paragraph, and I was specifically referring to events that take place in the final act of the film, which I think everyone can agree was pretty well done.

Can't believe I'm seriously typing this out. Even a semi-long post like mine takes a max of 30 seconds to read. Am I the only one here who reads absolutely everything in the discussions I follow?

Whatever.

Apocalypse Now (theatrical)

I had seen the Redux twice, but never the original.

I feel like the original flows much better. The Redux gives you a few more things to think about, but the theatrical cut just works better as a film. It's really gritty and tightly paced, and it still gives you A LOT to think about. Unlike Kingdom of Heaven or Aliens, I would pick the theatrical version of this film to show people who had never seen it before, with the Redux being reserved for fans.

And of course, I can't talk about any version of Apocalypse Now without gushing about how great the writing, cinematography and acting are. Martin Sheen, Sam Bottoms, Frederic Forrest and Marlon Brando are superb. Lawrence Fishburne was great, although I have always kind of hated his character. Even the minor characters' performances are classic. Great minor roles by Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper. The writing, particularly Willard and Kurtz's monologues, is incredible. And there are tons of incredibly effective shots in this film, many of which make use of terrific set pieces. The river base with no commanding officer that they reach towards the end of the film really felt like a depiction of hell.

And at the end of the film, I can't help but think that

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Nothing Kurtz ever did was nearly as bad as the atrocities we witness in the fairly short timespan of Willard's journey up the river. The scene where they end up massacring everyone on that trading boat is one of the most upsetting scenes ever, particularly after you see that the woman was just going to get her puppy.  :(

Holy fuck, what happened to this thread?

Exactly. Bring it home, mojovonio. More movie talk please, less sandbagging. Thanks for the kind words, though.

The Monster Squad

As awesome as I remember it (although I saw it a couple of years ago), and arguably one of the most influential films on me as a writer (I heart Shane Black and Fred Dekker). Looks great on Blu-ray, Wolfman's nards and all.

A fairly enjoyable, kooky romp. My problem with it was that it wasn't really outlandish enough. Sure, you have the eccentric, oddball characters but the movie felt a bit bogged down by reality. These characters belong in a fairy tale, not in the backwaters of France.

You'll like it if you liked City of Lost Children, or Hellboy 2, though this one isn't as good as either of them.

I've been watching a lot of movies lately stuff like...

The House of the Devil is a film I very much liked that I'm hesitant to recommend.  Its a horror film custom designed for movie geeks, not horror geeks.  It takes place in an 80's setting that's so thoroughly realized that anybody who ever lived through the era will have insta-flashbacks aligning with the perfectly accurate production design and filmmaking techniques (aided by the best John Carpenter score he never made).  Its artifice actually helps makes things scarier, even as nothing much is happening, because the style of everything is juuuuust enough off kilter to put one on edge.  Its a film that enthralled me with its technique, and really, isn't that what pretty much most good horror films do?  Its plenty good, but hardly conventional, but I liked it.
***1/2

Universal Soldier: Regeneration lives up to the hype.  At least as much hype as any direct-to-video sequel can ever garner, but seriously though, this movie kicks ass.  Its so good that Van Damme doesn't even enter the fray until the last act and that's okay, okay because there's already a surplus of well performed, brutal, well photographed fights, shootouts, and especially bludgeoniongs before Van Damme kicks into gear, and then things get really violent.  Regeneration is really a heckava big achievement, as there's been scads of low-medium budgeted DTV flicks out of Eastern Europe (see the last decade of Wesley Snipes and Steven Seagal's careers), and for the most part they all suck.  This one has ambition, has some really well done set pieces (check the Hard Boiled inspired tracking shot/uzi shootout), and surprisingly good acting and writing, with Dolph Lundgren of all people very nearly stealing the show with his brief bit.

I look very forward to John Hyams' next film, and I guess it wasn't such a dumb idea for Van Damme to skip The Expendables after all if it made this fine example of cinematic badassery happen.

***1/2

44 Inch Chest looks, feels, and sounds like an adapted stage play, and it isn't.  That's not really a problem, but it often doesn't feel like its anything more then an excuse to get its cast of fantastic character actors together so they can hang out and exchange whithering torrents of profanity at each other while the subtext of the impotency of these hyper masculine guys becomes more and more clear.  Its like a cut-rate Mamet play, but man oh man, is that profanity something great.  This all sounds pretty negative so far, and really, I did like the film, I just wish it had a better director, and perhaps, sometimes, subtitles (these guys are really damn British after all).

What's your point?  That if I don't see those things every day then I should be shocked by them?  People can understand and get used to seeing those things in context.  Therefore, seeing some dude torture-rape random teens that scream like cows doesn't have a lot of artistic merit.
If you personally don't see it, that's okay. All I'm saying is that there is a long tradition of writers and artists drawing attention to the dehumanizing aspects of extreme suffering. Also that most people become rather detached from notions of everyday mortality by living in these advanced societies.
Tradition has nothing to do with common sense.  The only way that an artist could believe that "violating human dignity" would magically make a meaningful moral or emotional impact is if they have no real self-awareness and are totally superficial.  They're basically taking the idea that society means you don't have to question your mortality so much, and extrapolating/misinterpreting it into a question of whether you're deprived of putting enough thought into your mortality (even though people become more logical about life/death the more educated they are).  The only thing that makes sense about that is how most artists can't see the merit of anything that's not up their own ass.

If it was in some context, like showing how people change morally after exposure to war or something, then it would make sense but you're talking about a horror movie.  You can't say that it makes a real argument about how suffering is interpreted when the movie centers around combining random teens with chainsaws.

Well I agree that Moon did raise some interesting scenarios about energy and cloning but Avatar was utterly boring anytime that somebody explained what was going on (unobtainium/ten to the fourth optical endings/etc).  Nothing actually sounded scientific.

Avatar's pulp scifi. It's got some science behind it, but it's not about the science it's about building up a setting for action scenes. Moon's better than Avatar anyway, which I've stated before.

Moon's better than Avatar anyway

No.

Today I watched Wild Strawberries. I really liked it a lot. Terrific writing and direction from Bergman. His visual mastery is apparent, and there are no wasted scenes or lines of dialogue. Everything has layers of subtext to it. Every scene helps us to better understand the main character and what he has been through to become who he is at that point in his life. Victor Sjostrom was fantastic throughout - very expressive and emotive. It was much warmer and more optimistic than the other Bergman films I had seen. The memory sequences were all quite good, although it was a little eerie seeing old Isak inhabiting the place of his younger self. Using the same actress for the Sara from his past and the present-day hitchhiker named Sara was a nice touch - you can see that her physical resemblance and shared name with the girl from Isak's past really jars his memories and emotions.

It was interesting to read that the title loses some of its meaning when translated into English. In Swedish, a "wild strawberry place" also means a place with personal or sentimental value. Keeping that in mind made the memory sequences from Isak's youth all the more touching.

The dream sequence at the beginning felt like something Lynch drew from for Eraserhead. That was quite a fantastic scene.

Moon is better than 4 out of 6 Star Wars movies.

I don't see how anyone could disagree with this.

And yeah, Sam Rockwell was amazing in that role. I didn't really notice the score though. I'll have to watch it again and pay closer attention to the music.

Moon upper decks on Avatar; it's so much better than Avatar it's not even funny. Moon succeeds in almost every single aspect that Avatar fails as a film. Although, years from now, we might look back and wonder, "What was the better amusement park ride: Avatar or Europe in the Air at Busch Gardens Williamsburg?"

Clint Mansell's score is also vastly superior to James Horner's score, but that's no surprise - Mansell is the best composer working in the business today.

Moon is better in some aspects, but it never reaches the dizzying heights that Avatar reaches. And a decade from now, it won't really be remembered much at all, whereas Avatar will be seen as a landmark film for decades. I'd say critics and audiences around the world will back me up on this. :smug

I don't remember Titanic really being talked about as a game-changer, but I wasn't really paying attention back in 1998.

Doesn't get much more definitive than this, considering Maurice's soft spot for sentimental, mainstream garbage over anything substantive. That's practically a death blow against Avatar.
