Its not for the Cohens of the world.

The Prestige for the first hour and a half: 8/10
The Prestige for the last ten minutes: 5/10

Nolan had no faith in his audience.  Inception proves he learned his lesson.

I actually think both Jackman and Bale were weak picks, but, hey, what can you do.

Your enjoyment of the movie will come down to whether or not you think the "twist" is the main thrust of the movie, and whether or not you can get past Nolan's 'Prestige For Dummies' final bout of exposition.

best fucking part of that entire movie is the first performance of Borden's Transporting Man illusion.  I actually got chills myself when I first saw it.

Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince
I like to say that I do not care about spoilers, because enjoying a good story does not depend on the ending. Unfortunately, that does not apply here. Knowing the big even at the end of this film takes any oomph or power the story could have had out. It's like a two and half hour movie that felt like it was four hours, and despite feeling that long, I cannot say many things that actually happened. Nothing of merit happens in the entire movie. There's a bunch of teen melodrama that is still somehow stuck in a 12 year old mentality where kissing is some big moment, but aren't these kids highschool seniors or more? Shouldn't they be fondling a bit? The naive form of romance here makes me realize why so many of the female potter fans jumped ship to Twilight. The giggly-girl shit is like half the movie, doesn't amount to anything and has no impact on the greater story. It's just fucking awful.

But it's not like the rest of the story matters much at all. There's one like key revealed to defeating the big baddy, but in the end that turns out to be a dead end too. Then old father touchmethere bites the dust and there isn't even a big final battle. Just goes out easily like nothing. And Potter has like a 10 second revenge fight.

And the lighting was god awful. Scenes were fucking unseeable.

Bronson
Awesome. Just watch it. Great soundtrack.

The five movies I want to watch now

1. 8 1/2 (because I've had it from Netflix for 6 months now...)
2. A Scanner Darkly (because I just read the book)
3. Bronson (because of Tom Hardy :heartbeat)
4. Black Dynamite (because)
5. The Prestige (because of the reason I already mentioned)

I've been meaning to ask about Netflix.  Is it worth it? I care more about the streaming than the dvds through mail.  Are most movies available to stream? or at least are newer movies available to stream?

For the most part, big new releases are not available, no. And most people seem to complain about the overall streaming selection.  But I have 140 titles in my instant queue, and I very much doubt I'll ever run out of things I really want to watch on it.

For example, out of those 5 I listed, only The Prestige isn't available for streaming.

Great Rumbler: I would expect nothing less, considering the source material.

The Crow
Man I remembered this movie being better. It was okay but it just wasn't compelling and super cheesy. Entertaining though. I still know guys from high school that think this is the greatest movie ever and it's super deep and awesome. I thought they were kinda dumb before, but now I just wanna shake them and say "what the hell is wrong with you??"
The fans of the comic are just as annoying. Jamie O'Barr made a goth-flavored revenge movie into a comicbook and interspersed a bunch Joy Division, Cure, and Bauhaus riffs. I've not read the comic since its initial run, but I liked it a lot at the time, as an angsty teenager/college student. I can't imagine it holds up well.

I have 1-DVD-out-at-a-time plan, which is $10.99 with Blu-ray. It's the cheapest plan with unlimited streaming and BRDs. You actually get a second DVD every once in a while if the movies at the top of your queue are all on a "long wait" or something. It's happened to me a couple of times.

The Village
I generally like Shayamalamadingdong on the basis of concept > execution alone (the happening omitted because it sucks and I haven't seen avatar). I liked this movie when it first came out, but I was slightly fucked up watching it this time and I kept lol'ing at Adrien Brody going full distinguished mentally-challenged fellow and Kitty from AD being in the movie and being named Kitty in here. I just kept thinking "SAY GOODBYE TO THESE, MICHAEL." But still, when this movie works, it works. The twist is absolutely horribly executed and Night can't get shit out of even good actors. But there are just some brilliantly awesome scenes. When Ivy is holding out her hand waiting for Lucius and the music is playing on a surround sound and Lucius comes running and grabs her hand and takes her to the cellar. Damn that scene is tense and so well done on every level. And fuck, he can create tension, but his hammy fucking writing works so hard against it. But he does a great job creating tense scenes regardless. I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY wish he would restrain himself and let someone else write his movies. He would be goddamn incredible, I think. I have a special place in my heart even for lady in the water but that's another story.

The Mothman Prophecies
Very cool premise. Despite some pacing issues, I really liked it. Not necessarily scary, but tense and interesting as hell.

Agreed on all counts. :hump

Although the twist at the end of The Village really stuffed up the whole movie for me if I remember right.
I'm one of those people that can like particular parts of a movie and judge it based solely on that part or without it at all.  I can listen to songs for one say one specific verse or guitar solo then change it.  I think everytime I watch The Village from now on it will only be the beginning and middle.

The Crow

I never checked out the comic, but I could totally see it working better as a comic.  As a movie it's just so... well the only word is really angsty.  The lines, the music, the story.  It feels like Sin City without any of the talent, style or self awareness.  It takes itself way too seriously.

Just saw The Losers, which will probably never get a cinematic release here in Japan. It was as fun as promised, though they took all the menace out of two characters, and played one of them (Jason Patric's character, Max) basically for laughs. Consequently it lost a lot of its edge. I guess that's an inevitable consequence of making it a 13 movie or whatever.

Really enjoyed Chris Evans as Jensen - it's a slight role but he absolutely nailed it and was genuinely hilarious in places. The cast generally has great chemistry and the fun they had making it shines through. It was also cool to see some of the art integrated in the movie - I absolutely love Jock's stuff. Those covers he did are among my favorite comics art.

Pity it bombed - a bigger-budgeted sequel could have been great :( There are so many awesome scenes in the comic that I was dying to see on the big screen.

Land of the Lost. What was I thinking? It was almost entirely crap. I did laugh out loud a few times, which means it was better than Bewitched, the last time I felt major disappointment in Will Ferrell. I don't mind them poking big fun at one of my favorite childhood series -- it deserves nothing more than derision (As opposed to HR Puffenstuff, which any thinking person will agree needs a porno parody remake). Unfortunately the jokes fall flat 80% of the time. I did almost piss myself laughing when they first lay hands on the Sleestak crystal obelisk.

I can't claim to have seen a whole lot, but "Compañeros" and "Death Rides a Horse" are both pretty damn good.  The latter is on Netflix streaming.

If you haven't seen Leone's "Duck, You Sucker", that's also on streaming right now.

Yeah, pretty much.  Arnold as the Russian Terminator was fun but he didn't really say anything memorable.  Instead you got to see his bare ass.  Fair trade-off?

There was a piece of music during a scene where they entered a parking garage that was very similar to that "Caribbean-style" music that kept playing in Commando.

Still watching some golden oldies...
All the fuss about Mel Gibson made me watch the Lethal Movie quadrology. :teehee

Lethal Weapon

Still a good movie. Had not watched it in over 10 years. Still holds up well.

8.5/10

Lethal Weapon 2

Fucking amazing. I think this is my favorite LW movie.

9.5/10

Lethal Weapon 3

Also very good. But I think I had more fun watching the first two LW movies.

8

Lethal Weapon 4

Jet Li drool~~~~. Probably his best role ever. The movie is also pretty good. The dudes are pretty old though. And I hate Chris Tucker's face.

8/10

Total Recall

They don't make movies like this one anymore. Fucking epic. Still awesome to watch.

9.5/10

Pretty average movie, not really the great. Only worthwhile thing was Kristen Stewart who was fantastic in it.

Fourth and final of the adventures of Jacques Tati's Mr. Hulot. It lacks the striking visuals, sometimes frenetic pace, and some of the humor of Playtime, but still has some very hilarious moments as Mr. Hulot encounters all sorts of troubles as he transports a newly-designed camping-car to an auto show in Amsterdam. It's one of those movies that you really have to be in the mood to watch and you have to enjoy movies that move at a slow pace and aren't really about anything. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it despite some stretches that moves very slowly.

hey, at least Wall-E was great for a while.  Up was consistently dull.

Yeah, I liked Wall-E. Up....was enjoyable but I didn't LOVE it like a lot seemed to.

I liked Up.

But the only time I remember I ever watched it is when someone else mentions it.
