"There is a drinking game associated with Withnail & I. The game consists of keeping up, drink for drink, with each alcoholic substance consumed by Withnail over the course of the film. All told, Withnail is shown drinking roughly nine and a half glasses of red wine, half a pint of cider, one shot of XXXX (vinegar or overproof rum are common substitutes), two and a half shots of gin, six glasses of sherry, thirteen glasses of whisky and half a pint of ale. It may be presumed that this quantity of alcohol, if consumed during the course of the film, would prove fatal."

Well shit, dude.  I've got a three day weekend coming up this weekend.  Fly out here tomorrow and we'll watch the movie, get absolutely fucking wasted (maybe die?) and then I'll drive you home.  My car has a dvd player so we can actually do it again on the way there... several times.

I just found out Van Damme is beloved by the french for his aphorisms.

Quote
••If you work with a jackhammer during an earthquake, stop, otherwise you are working for nothing.

••If you phone a psychic and she doesn't answer the phone before it rings, hang up.

••My wife is not my best sexual partner, but she's good with the housework.

••Obviously I've taken drugs.

••When I walk across my living room from my chimney to my window, it takes me 10 seconds, but for a bird it takes one second, and for oxygen zero seconds!

••I am fascinated by air. If you remove the air from the sky, all the birds would fall to the ground. And all the planes, too.

••Air is beautiful, yet you cannot see it. It's soft, yet you cannot touch it. Air is a little like my brain.

I ordered a copy of Demons on DVD (no high def release yet!) to watch with Disposable White Guy - along with a six-pack of pumpkin ale - but it looks like he's going to have to pass. Anyone want in on this?

Also, I wrote my mini-review of The Evil Dead Blu-ray release on my blog, so I won't repost it all here. Short version: it's the best high-def release of Raimi's trilogy thus far, and a pretty great flick to boot.

This one. Written by the hand of Dario Agento, no less.

I ordered it because I've never seen it, and it came recommended by a peer as the kind of ridiculous '80s horror film that you can zone out and swig a few beers to. I've been eying it for quite some time, but I was sold when my friend sent me this exchange of dialogue from the film in an e-mail body:

Rosemarie: Ow, shit, I scratched myself
Tony the Pimp: That will teach you to touch things.

Day of the Dead (2008)
Holy.Shit.

I like it more than Survival of the Dead.  But that's not saying much.  It's just absolutely ridiculous.  Zombies are twilight vampire fast and the acting is sooooo bad.  Just wow.  Watch it if you wanna giggle some I guess.  I really don't know what to say about it.  Just wow.

What did you dislike (kick ass)? I'd really like to be not alone in my reasons for not liking it?

didn't like the acting or the story or the action.  the over reliance on cgi blood was hella obnoxious

two days ago I watched Harry Brown which also had cgi blood but was a really well executed version of someone who's made as hell and ain't gonna take it no more.

last night watched the newest OSS 117 film.  Funnier than the first, but i don't know if it's a better movie

Saw that last Indy film. It was bad as expected but not due to a lot of the nerd rage issues I read about on the internet. Stuff like the alien plot line or surviving the nuke in a fridge don't seem anymore outlandish than anything else in the indy films. The main problem is just that its kind of boring (I fell asleep trying the watch it the first time). And overly maudlin. The CGI stuff looks bad and phony (that chase scene in the jungle). And Shia is woefully miscast as both some sort of 50's greaser and then indy's son. Both Temple of Doom and this one are weak films but for different reasons.

The nuke fridge scene is one of the most ridiculous scenes in modern film. It's hard to compare it to even the most ridiculous aspects of other Indy films (not including Temple), which were at least done well.

The first is horribly written and the plot is horrible and has no redeeming values; to make matters worse you can see where Spielberg took cues from POTC and other blockbusters in some of the worst parts of the chase scene. At least Temple has the most badass iteration of Indy going for it.

Horrible movie. Harry Potter is better.

I didn't think it was all that bad.  Not a huge blockbuster, but I'd watch a sequel.  My complaint was poor use of the mega stars they had in that movie.  The most screen-time Uma Thurman got in that movie was the CGI head they used as a weapon.

Overall, I liked it for what it was.

lol UPDATE on Essential Killing with its TIFF Premiere. Also to screen at Venice.

guylodge: ESSENTIAL KILLING (Skolimowski, C) Things I Never Needed To See, #1,736: Vincent Gallo forcing a woman to breastfeed him at gunpoint.

guylodge: ESSENTIAL KILLING Take 2: Well-meaning survival tale is nonetheless unilluminatingly gruelling: like "Cold Mountain" gone Taliban.

TimeOutFilm: ESSENTIAL KILLING(Skolimowski)****Gallo excels in Taliban survival yarn. Taut as hell. Ending fudged. Contained fest's most shocking scene

ankash1009: Essential Killing has only circumstantial, atmospheric dialogues, characters do their random talking, camera stays on Gallo

The American was fantastic. One of the better movies this year. I really loved it. Felt very old-school classic cinema. A very pre-James Bond/Jason Bourne spy movie in which it is very slow paced and very little action. A great drama, would have been a classic if released like around 1970.

I thought the ads for this were extremely misleading as it made the film seem more action focused. Doesn't matter to me because everything Ive read about it sounds perfect but I'm afraid the word of mouth may be unfavorable.

Oh the word of mouth will be awful. There is almost no action at all. The trailer/tv spots basically show the literally two times Clooney uses a gun to make it seem like he shoots a lot people. But what it is is fantastic. I have enough Bourne/Bond style films to last a lifetime. These type of movies like The American are kind of lost relics of the 60's-early 70's.

Horrible movie. Harry Potter is better.
The Harry Potter movie was also pretty horrible, as though it tried to squeeze in everything from the book, but without any emotional context.

Percy Jackson manages to screw up the logic and causes from the book, as well as removing everything even marginally compelling about the main character. The book was really good though.

One of the worst movies I've seen this year. The best actors in the movie are Christina Ricci's boobs. They get a lot of screentime. So it was kinda worth watching in the end. She's so hot.

Best Worst Movie
(Image removed from quote.)

Couldn't have been better. Hilarious and heartbreaking. Everyone needs to watch this documentary.

I've been wanting to see this since I saw the trailer last year.  Is out on disc now?

And I took my nephew and his friend to a movie today....they wanted to see Avatar....AGAIN.  I don't care if it's IMAX 5D, I never want to see that movie ever, ever again.  It was kind of fun the first time around but now it's like pulling teeth. And those extra 8 minutes are totally worthless, as expected.

70 bucks today on fucking Avatar.  I need a sedative.

It was the first time I saw the Tron trailer on IMAX 3D though.  THAT was awesome.

Anchorman

Why do people hold this up as hilarious?  Maybe 1/10 jokes were actually "laugh" funny and that's being generous.  Which means there was 5-15 mins of boringness between laughs.  At halfway I just started browsing the internet while watching to finish it.  Best part were the cameos that were not Vince Vaughn.

The Other Guys was just as boring too.  So was Talladega Nights.  This writer/director McKay is zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

They Live -  Decided to check it out since its been coming up a lot on the internet recently and I've never seen it.

Disappointing  :-\

Went in expecting action, corny one-liners and creepy glasses scenes. I got all those things, but in small quantities and at an excruciatingly slow pace due to countless empty, pointless scenes. It just seemed like characters spent an abundant amount of time staring at each other saying nothing.

Also, wtf was upp with that awful fist fight?

Anyway, I expect most to not agree since it seems like its a pretty beloved movie online.

This movie was awesome.  There is a lot of action and the biggest plot point is about taking a poop in prison.  At the beginning of the movie, the main character is all scruffy with a full head of hair, then he pulls out a single razer blade and in the next scene he's all groomed up and shit.  And stereotypes :bow2

It's on netflix instant watch too.
