Do you want to watch a serious movie about the nature of war and meditation on freedom, war porn, or wacky '70s football movie about a ragtag bunch of misfits who wine the championship?  How about Saving Private Ryan, which is all three smashed together!

What an awful film.

True Grit

Great acting - Bridges was great. The girl playing Mady stole the show, what a performance.

Knight and Day

a little disappointing. Action isn't all that great because it mixes really hokey cg effects in with some practical elements. chemistry between Cruise and Diaz falls flat most of the time. Plot is paced poorly and it does a bad job of trying to mimic spy "globe-trotting" movies. 3:10 to Yuma is a personal favorite of mine so this being Manigold's follow up is, as said before, disappointing.

thumbs down.

127 Hours
Pretty awesome movie.  Great pacing, especially considering the plot and setting.  The movie has a great way of making you feel dreadful about what's coming.  Don't know if it's something I'll ever have the urge to see again.

I actually watched it last night and am not so sure about that.  It's pretty typical of Boyle; take an inspirational story and load it up with excessive emotional manipulation and inappropriate and distracting stylish interjections.  I'd need to be pinned under a boulder to sit through it again.

I guess it's just the actual subject on hand doesn't annoy/bore me like slumdog did so I liked it a lot better.  I don't mind Boyle's directing/style in general, just really didn't care for it in slumdog.

The Wolfman [2010]

This is not a gothic horror movie, it's an action movie with lots of gruesome violence. And that's the movie's biggest problem. There's never any build up of tension, the gruesome horror starts in the very first scene. The action's too violent, too fast-paced, too in-your-face to actually be scary. They're probably meant to be exciting or something, but the gore and blood feels too out of place with the lulls for the characters to brood and stare. It tried to interject a bit of scares with two utterly laughable jump-scare scenes that go thusly: *jump-scare* then *character wakes up* then *jump-scare* then *character wakes up again*. Those two scenes are just so utterly ridiculous that they're impossible to take seriously. Another problem is that there is no ambition in storyline or characters, they're ripped straight from the simplicity of the early Universal horror movies simply updated with modern aesthetics and violence. But too much violence, rendering it impossible to establish a feeling of dread or to ever be genuinely unsettling [unless you're unsettled by lots of gruesome violence]. It fails at being anything other than a Victorian action movie and that's unfortunate. It's not all bad though, the acting is uniformly good throughout and the production is absolutely gorgeous, with lots of detailed sets and convincing, creepy locales. But ultimately it's one that got away, an almost good movie that never reaches the heights that it should have.

Wolfman's biggest sin was wasting the talents of its three fine leading actors.  Even they couldn't overcome a lousy script with pretty mediocre directing.

Yeah, they've got these great actors but they never actually do anything with them. Umm...what? They're just...there. There's no attempt to have the characters be anything but their paper-thin roles, although Anthony Hopkins had one or two scenes that were pretty good, but some that are just...weird...like he's just saying his lines to say them, not really acting. This is one movie that's far from the sum of its parts.

I could have forgiven a lot of its problem if it was actually SCARY. But it isn't, it's not even unsettling.

This is one of my biggest disappointments of 2010.

I'm disappointed with the direction of modern horror films in general.  There are so few films nowadays that try to scare without using a ton of gore.  Personally, that shit doesn't even faze me since I've had the experience of decapitating a cadaver before.

Good horror has to be understated and has to be built up. Those are two things that modern horror movies just don't understand. Tons of gore isn't really the problem, just a symptom.

no horror movie has ever scared me.

the main reason i watch horror is for story. horror stories are amazing when done right (night of the living dead, jacob's ladder). They can also be entertaining as fuck (evil dead 2, dawn of the dead original, nightmare on elm street)

the shining is the only movie that scared out because I used to stay in many hotels when younger.  My brother and I would wander around the halls at night and his idea of a joke was to push me down and run away leaving me alone.  now I got the keys to the gym, I shoot motherfuckers over the net.

I like 28 Days Later, even the end.  I used to not be a big fan when it was originally released, but the ending fits it pretty well IMO and it's still an original and unique view on the characters and how they interact.  The fact that these guys

is probably the most unsettling part of the movie for me.  I loved the last act.

The Other Guys

Not always hilarious, but lots of funny moments scattered throughout. I also liked the back and forth between Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, lots of great moments there. The action scenes were actually pretty good too, nice to see a modern action movie with lots of practical effects instead of just throwing CG around everywhere. It's not something I'd watch again all the way through, as with most Adam McKay movies. A Samuel L. Jackson/The Rock buddy cop movie would have been more awesome though.

Ive always found the fact that he never got web powers from his spider bite but invented a new substance to use as webbing to be kinda silly. I didn't really like the spider-man movies but I enjoyed the organic webs aspect a lot.

Wasn't there a storyline anyway where he developed it over time?

Yeah and it was awful.

Mechanical web shooters are much better since they can be used as a plot device.  They even did that a couple times in the animated show.  Like, Spider-Man's webs don't last a long time, but Mysterio was able to make his own web shooters that lasted longer; he was trying to frame spider-man and the webbing made the difference.  Or when Green Goblin attacked Peter after finding out his identity and Peter was stuck fighting a flying dude without webbing.  Or times when he straight up runs out of webbing.

If it's just a throw away thing to be more like the (older) comics, then whatever.  But say they have a scene where the Lizard (iirc one of the villains) attacks him as Parker (since Peter is a lab assistant or some shit) he'd be fucked trying to wrangle him without web shooters.  Creates a lot more tension in the scene and ultimately more beneficial than quelling people that say "lol how can a genius kid that gets perfect grades while still being a super hero and struggles financially make web shooters in a world where they have hover boards and guys with robot arms and magical spiders and a sand guy and alien goo from space etc exist!? it's silly!"

Watched the original Ghostbusters which I hadn't seen since it probably came out the first time. Enjoyable enough. Most of it holds up although it wasn't quite as funny as I remember it. I do like how they don't waste a lot of time explaining the premise. There are ghosts. They are scientists. They bust them. Not a lot of time spent trying to tell the audience why ghosts are about which is nice. A lot of movies nowadays waste a lot of time trying to make you logically believe the premise.

The Town was good.  I liked the ending, though, it lasted longer than it should.

haha it seems like the original cut was 4 hours, then down to 2 hour 50 min, and around 2 hour for the theatrical.  I guess if the rest of the film was paced like the end, it would have worked better.

also, rental blu-rays from netflix stink and fuck them.  For my $2 extra a month, I shouldn't be getting a disc that has eight unskippable trailers before the movie and just the movie without any extras.  And this is after the movie has been out for weeks on regular blu-ray and earlier if you downloaded it; netflix gets them later because I guess comcast and other companies have exclusivity deals.

In an age where everybody can be a critic, there's always going to be a lot of bad opinions out there.

Return of the Jedi is more bad than good.  It starts great, then it becomes pretty boring on Yavin (I think Yavin is the forest planet) and then it becomes awesome with Luke confronting Vader and the Emperor.  I hated all the slapstick with the Ewoks and Han was band and the space battle felt like treading the same ground as the first one, only it didn't matter.  First movie was destroying the Death Star, shit! it was a big deal.  In RotJ it was destroying the Death Star(2).  Now there are black people, but that happened already.

Knowing that they made a second death star makes the fight and destruction against it practically pointless.  If Luke died in the fight against Vader and the Emperor and the Death Star 2 was destroyed, I'm pretty sure the villains would just make another Death Star.  Shit, maybe they'd make two death stars, so like, one of them would fire at the people fighting the decoy death star.  And I don't even remember what was happening on the planet; I think they were doing something with shields or something.  It felt more like other characters needed something to do while Luke was doing the only thing that mattered.
